@RedBull #IceOne #Husqvarna Factory #Racing’s Max Nagl continues to lead the 2015 MXGP World Championship
At the end of a tough day at the office, Husqvarna FC 450 mounted Max Nagl has maintained his MXGP championship lead after finishing third and fifth at the GP of Great Britain at Matterley Basin. With seven rounds of the 2015 MXGP series now complete Nagl sits four points ahead of Belgian Clement Desalle.
Although not the results he’d hoped for the GP of Great Britain still ended with a good showing from Nagl. Sitting 16th following a poor start and a crash when the first moto was red flagged, Nagl was to place third at the end of the re-started first moto. Starting well he moved from fourth into third early in the race – the position he would hold until the finish.
The second moto again saw a great start from Nagl. Looking to have secured the holeshot he dropped in behind Britain’s Shaun Simpson where he remained during a frantic opening lap. Trying all he could to move into the lead Nagl lost his rhythm and instead of moving forwards into the race lead he dropped back to third and by lap four to fifth – the position he would eventually finish.
Nagl’s IceOne Racing team-mate Todd Waters was holding fifth when the opening MXGP moto was red flagged. Following the re-start he placed ninth, losing one position after a fall on the closing lap. The final moto of the day proved a tough one for Waters. Coming together with Tyla Rattray the Australian battled his way to 16th. Waters ended the GP frustrated that he’d not secured a better result, but encouraged at having been in fifth when the opening moto was red flagged.
Despite a strong performance that saw Dean Ferris sixth at the end of Saturday’s qualifying race, the Wilvo Nestaan rider was unable to find his speed during the two MXGP races. 13th in race one Ferris finished 18th in the second moto.
In MX2 Wilvo Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Aleksandr Tonkov rounded out the seventh GP of the season in seventh overall following eighth and seventh place finishes. Showing impressive speed early in the first moto Aleksandr ended up eighth, going one place better in the second moto to finish seventh.
The 2015 MXGP series continues next weekend, May 31, with the GP of France.
Max Nagl: “It’s disappointing to have lost some points in the MXGP championship, but despite not having a great weekend I’m still holding the red plate and that’s a good thing. I didn't have any big problems during the weekend, just not the result I hoped for in the second moto. The re-start of the first race helped me. I got a bad start and then crashed and had to work my way to 16th. So to finish third at the end of the re-start was good. I felt good and during the last five laps, I was closing on the riders ahead of me. I got a great start in the second moto but I lost my rhythm trying to pass Shaun Simpson. I had guys trying to pass me when I was focused on Shaun and I lost my rhythm a little. If I could have got in front of Shaun early on I think my race would have been different.”
Aleksandr Tonkov: “It wasn’t the best GP for me. I made some small mistakes and it’s not my favourite track. I started ok in the first race but I just couldn't move forwards. It was a similar thing in the second moto. I felt like I was riding pretty good but I just needed to be a little faster. I wanted a better result but I know that now I am able to really start training properly after my injuries I will be able to get stronger. I will do a lot of riding this week to be stronger for next weekend’s GP in France.”
Todd Waters: “It was an up and down GP for me, but I definitely feel like I’m getting stronger. I was gutted when the first moto was red flagged as I was fifth. In the re-start I also felt pretty good and was holding my own. I made a small mistake towards the end of the moto, but ninth was ok. In the second moto things just didn't go my way. I came together with Rattray pretty hard and was feeling a little fatigued. The result wasn’t anything to shout about but generally I feel like I’m getting faster. I just need to start well and stay fast for a full moto.”
Dean Ferris: “It’s been a frustrating GP for me. Saturday was really good – I felt great during my qualifying race and to finish sixth was really good. My speed was right there. It was the first time all season I'd been racing up front so I was feeling confident going into Sunday. I don't really know why but I struggled in both motos. My speed just wasn’t there, which it was the day before. I was struggling and things just didn't work out.”
