DISAPPOINTING WEEKEND FOR @HUSQVARNA LAGLISSE AT #ASSEN #MOTO3
#RACE INCIDENTS DASH HOPES FOR VINALES AND HERRERA
Husqvarna Laglisse riders Isaac Viñales and Maria Herrera were both on their way to possible top ten finishes at the Dutch TT at the Assen circuit on Saturday when luck abandoned them. Within a short space of time, the two promising riders where involved in separate race incidents that resulted in dashed hopes and racing bikes and riders in the gravel.
While a group of seven fast riders were out front, both Husqvarna riders were fighting hard in the following group. Herrera was in eighth and looked certain to achieve a career best finish when she was put out of the race after another rider clipped her bike. She can at least take away the knowledge that she was performing well on a circuit that was new to her, and this will give her confidence for the next round at Germany’s Sachsenring.
Herrera, who fortunately was not injured in her crash, said it had still been a good weekend in The Netherlands. “We were doing great, the bike was very good and I am feeling stronger at every race,” she said. “In Germany I will try even harder, I will have even more desire to do well and will train very hard.”
Viñales went skidding off the track in the eleventh lap of the 22-lap race and he too walked away uninjured.
Team Manager Gelete Nieto said while the outcome of the race was disappointing for the team, he still wanted to highlight Herrera’s performance. “Without this incident, she would have probably finished in a great position, but she is still happy that she was able to overtake very fast riders. Isaac was in the same group as Maria and also had bad luck. After he returned to the pits be said he had experienced an electrical problem during the race and we have to check what happened.”
Vinales is now eighth in the points in the fight for the Moto3 World title with 10 more rounds to the end of the season. In the last round in Catalunya, Herrera became only the fifth woman ever to pick up world championship points in a MotoGP competition, thus joining a very select group of riders.
Riders contest the next round at Germany’s Sachsenring on July 7.
