The 21-year-old Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS rider Jack Miller turned the halfway point of 2016 season in thirteenth place in the championship. Before the pre-season test in February, the young Australian fractured his tibia and fibula in his right leg in a training accident. Despite his quick recovery, Miller had the misfortune again during practice at the Americas Grand Prix fracturing the fifth metatarsal and bruising the ankle of his right foot.



Having come through this difficult situation, Miller consistently improved his riding. In the Catalan Grand Prix, he finished tenth, the highest result for him in the premier class. At the next race in Assen, with torrential rain suspending the race for a while, Miller controlled the difficult situation and won his first MotoGP class race.



"I don't know what to feel at the moment..."



An overwhelming expression of the race winner told eloquently more than words.



“The last three laps were pretty chilled and I was just trying to keep (1m) 50s' and come out over the line...and you know the rest!”



Miller, who jumped up to MotoGP class from Moto3 in 2015, had to struggle to get accustomed to the premier class throughout his first season. In his second year, thanks to his excellent adaptability, he proved that his ‘grade skipping’ was the right decision.



“I mean, if it's turned my season ahead I don't know, but it has turned this weekend around for sure and it's great for me to get this, but we all know the reality. We're still in the learning phase and coming up through from Moto3 into MotoGP was a big step, but this makes it clear that we do know how to ride a motorbike and I'm not an idiot.



“It gives Honda and everybody something back for taking such a big gamble on me and the risks that those guys have taken to bring me from Moto3 to MotoGP. So big thanks to them and to my family as well for moving to Europe six years ago. Taking that sort of gamble on me, all makes it worthwhile and it's an amazing feeling that I can't explain at this point in time.”






The following race at Sachsenring circuit was another difficult ordeal, with the flag-to-flag rule applied the first time this season. As the race started under wet conditions (but began to dry towards the end), the young Australian led the race for a few laps during the middle stages. Finally, Miller crossed the checkered flag seventh, giving him his third consecutive top 10 finish.



“It was a really good race and I can be happy with the result. But in all honesty I should have trusted my team more and come in earlier for the bike change. It’s a real shame I stayed out a little bit too long because I am sure I could have been standing on the podium again.”



He said that he learnt a lot from this experience.



“As soon as I went back out on slicks I just said ‘why didn’t I do this earlier?’ It was a big lesson for me to take on board but it was my first real flag-to-flag race and it is good experience for me. I still had a lot of fun racing at the front with the likes of Valentino and I nearly passed Dani on the last lap to take the top six. When I was out on the slicks at the end my pace was really competitive and that gives me a big boost of confidence for the future.”



The more he races, the more he gains experience and improves.
