Getting A Bike

#1 Unread post by darren884 »

Hi guys I am 18 and still go to high school. I have a few questions:
  • How high do you think insurance will be for me if I get a bike?
  • I am thinking of getting the Kawasaki Ninja 250R, Honda Rebel, or Honda Nighthawk; are these good beginning bikes? Can these go 80mph? Am I able to ride on the freeway with these and get to school?
  • Is it easy for me to get a motorcycle liscence? I used to ride gopeds and scooters and stuff around town when I was younger, so hopefully it will be similar.
  • How often will I have to fill my gas tank up?
Thanks. :)

Expect to pay as high as a grand to insure the bike for a year. I'm 18 also and I've had quotes up to 2.5k. I'd suggest just putting it in your guardian's name. But if you wanna build up your credit or you just simply want the bike in your name then expect to pay a hefty fee.

They'll go 80, but expect the bike to shake.

I'd say a three month minimum. First you have to get your permit, then you can either take the DMV test or the MSF course for your motorcycle license. Scheduling appointments and actually spending time practicing so you don't fail is gunna take a few months, I'm roughly estimating three months, and thats being optimistic. Are you familiar with standard transmissions? If you've driven a stick shift car before then it'll help you while you learn the gear shifting on a bike, if not then that's something else you must take time to learn and perfect.

You can get a good 40mpg++ on the bikes you've mentioned. Depends how far your school is.

A grand? Are you sure? I thought it would be more as I am paying about $450 every 3 months for car insurance. Do you think I would be able to take my motorcycle on the freeway if it has 250cc?

Also is it bad for the bike if I am going 80 on it if it is a 250cc? How many times do I need to get maintenance?

car + bike on same insurance = multy car discount.
Me, if i were to add a bike that cost $4,500 brandy new on my policy, it'd cost me $110 extra a year. My insurance (MetLife) charges by cost of bike new. Of course, as the covereage changes, the cost changes. Also, i'm a step 14 and currently pay $1,410 a year for decent insurance.

A few grand, I saw my quotes and decided to just put it in my father's name. Sure you can take a 250cc on the freeway, just don't expect to be zipping by cars freely. I have a friend attending college in the Domican Republic who said he'd rather commit suicide than take a 250cc on the freeway out here in NYC. I have another friend in Virgina who doesn't even take his R6 on the freeway and restricts his riding to zones with a 40 mph speed limit. It really depends on you.

Take away that mans' R6. Seriously, he has violated reality and the fun police can't allow such a nice machine to be so horribly treated. That's speed malnourishment if I ever heard of it. Is your friend just learning to ride? Around me the average speed limit is 45, but you can commonly run across 50 and 55 before getting near an interstate.

If you only get liability, it should be less than $1000 (depending on the bike obviously). I'm 20 and about to get my first bike (probably a 500r) and I've gotten quotes from $700 to $4700  a year for full coverage. Expect to get screwed by your age if you plan on getting a policy in your name. Call your parent's insurance and see how much it would cost to add yourself as a bike rider.

Not new, he had experience with dirt bikes. He even rides around with his sister on her Harley. He's just "safe" I guess.
