Thanks, I will take a look into those for my next pair. Any recommendations? :D
Grey Thumper wrote:Some motorcyclists claim the steel toe caps can cut off your toes, but I think this is a myth. I'm more worried about the laces getting untied (although that doesn't keep me from wearing a really ancient pair of Doc Martens from time to time).

Edit: Well apparently, the steel toe myth was busted in, appropriately, Mythbusters, 3rd Season, Episode 42 (2005)
I remember watching the episode, it was quite interesting. About the laces, I double wrap them around the boot so they are not long, I haven't had them untie themselves yet in all the years I've used laces. You are right, there is a concern there with the laces getting caught in a chain, it would be interesting to see if this is another ubran myth or can really happen.

I'm sure motorcycle boot manufacturers know what they are doing and designing a better boot, after all, you don't see MotoGP or TT racers using steel toe boots on the track.

Again, steel toes are just an alternative, maybe not as good as proper motorcycle boots but they did work in my case. which was a high-side style accident at speed.

For gear I wear proper motorcycle stuff (Joe Rocket Ballastic and Joe Rocket leather and textile gloves) along with a full face helmet (DOT and Snell approved).

Are you saying Mike rides his bike Porky Pig style!
People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.

Always wear a helmet, eye protection, and protective clothing. Never ride under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Apologies Dino. If i had began my midlife crisis a bit earlier I would have posted this earlier and we would both have the same boots LOL.
It's all good. I now have 3 pairs of boots and 2 of them I probably won't ever wear again. I'm going to have to figure out how to sell them or wear them as part of a Halloween costume hahahaha

storysunfolding wrote:The SMX5 is a good boot. Ideally what you're doing by having a good supportive mid calf boot is changing where a break can happen. Break your ankle or any other joint and it's very rare to get back to 100%. If you get a break midleg (tibula/fibula or femur) it's pretty easy to put in rods, screws plates then get you back on your way.

I have a friend that crashed with a pair of Sidi Vortices at 30 mph whose leg got pinned under the bike. From the bulge pushing out against his skin we were fairly certain that he'd broken his leg midway up. Turns out it was a hematoma. This happened two years ago and he still has the bruises on his legs. After seeing the crash, and literally seeing him walk away from it- everyone in that riding group now has midcalf boots

OOOH, I'm not planning on breaking anything. I'll continue to wear my iron-man suit (and now boots) whenever I get on the bike. :O)

Some say Mike does ride with pants, but in the British sense of the word.

(Man, this thread is quickly deteriorating . . .)

Hey guys. I am a brand new rider (don't even have my bike yet) and because I fantasized about riding a bike since last summer I saved up some money to buy my protective gear. I just want something that gives the most protection for a reasonable price, I don't mind the brand. Safety over whats cool haha.
