I have a Fulmer AFD4 jousting helmet. I can't complain because I love the medieval look and it was free with my scooter(that got stolen ).

If you're going for a Shoei or Arai you're paying a hefty price so look at HJC, Scorpion, or Fulmer.

+1 to all the raves about the EXO's from Scorpion.

I have the EXO-400 and it fits my head beautifully; soft, roomy, and cool. I ride in the extreme Phoenix heat and it is no worse than it would be without the helmet on. It's actually better because you don't have the hot air blasting your face!

Helmets need to be tried on. Walk around the store with it for 30 minutes or so. You'll feel hard spots and spots that are nice and soft. Recall the size and style then shop around for a good price.

I've never heard this. Tell me what source you got it from. Or is it something you came up with yourself?

Linda he's not incorrect. Though I suspect it is more of a manufacturer ploy to enable further business.

In racing, depending upon the Snell Year, your helmet will expire, usually it is certified for 2 years. Then it is time for a new one. UV, UVA and UVB light destroys a helmet without the wearer knowing it. Example, put a boat in the sun without a cover and see what happens after exposure. Same thing happens to your helmet, but less rigurously.

5 years is about all any major manufacturer will warranty the helmet for. Plastic polymers break down and can weaken the structure/skeleton.

The fellow who did my BRC told me. So did the guy at the shop where I bought my helmet. My uncle reinforced this belief. Jimmy who sells me Kebabs when I want them has been riding since he was a feotus, and he said, 'Yeah. You're supposed to, but not many people do.' The pamphlet on safety gear that I got from the DMV told me so.

I heard it from a few reputable (and not so reputable) sources while doing my homework. It's fair enough to say that the shop told me so because they want to sell me another helmet, but Jimmy has nothing to gain by making something like that up.
If it's WRONG, I'd be surprised. It seems reasonable to me to be on top of something as important as helmet integrity. It could just be overly cautious, but I wouldn't call it wrong (not that you did).

I'm also in Australia, so that may have a bearing on requirements. But I would imagine that your head is just as important and easily damaged by motorcycle crashes in other countries!

Well, considering that Mr MHSNA has a link to his online helmet store in his signature, I'd say he DOES have something to gain from the 2-3 year replacement recommendation.

That's one reason why I questioned it.
