The key is to NOT be dumb (trust your intuition, if someone seems 'creepy' get away). Take your cell phone (AND a phone card, trust me). Take regular breaks to keep yourself mentally sharp. And stop for the night BEFORE you "NEED" to. It really sucks to pull up to a hotel, tired, ready to stop, and find they have NO rooms available.
Let someone know the basic route you're taking, and a rough idea of when you expect to be where...
