The key is to NOT be dumb (trust your intuition, if someone seems 'creepy' get away). Take your cell phone (AND a phone card, trust me). Pack your bike's tool kit and a basic first aid kit.

Take regular breaks to keep yourself mentally sharp. And stop for the night BEFORE you "NEED" to. It really sucks to pull up to a hotel, tired, ready to stop, and find they have NO rooms available.

Let someone know the basic route you're taking, and a rough idea of when you expect to be where...

Well, I just got in from a 3 day trip. I rode about 1270km.
Some of it was on some very twisty highways....one of them has even been referred to as tail of the dragon north. :)

Longest ride with someone would be from Calgary Alberta to San Jose Costa Rica.

Longest solo ride would be from Calgary to Scottsdale.

Welcome back Chels! :D

You should post some of those photos from your San Jose, Costa Rica trip and New Zealand as it was quite an adventure many would be interested in hearing again. :D

If you had to do the Costa Rica trip again, what bike would you do it on?

Mike.

1204 miles : San Luis Obispo, CA to Las Vegas for BikeFest.

Vegas to Bishop in the Owens Valley. Gorgeous, even in the midst of a sand storm with gusts up to 60 mph.

Owens Valley back to San Luis Obispo via Mammoth Mountain and Yosemite National Park. Awesome!!!

Yesterday, rode 362 miles round trip to see a friend for dinner in L.A. Splitting lanes on the 405 freeway was the scariest thing I've done in my entire life!

I got in last night from my big road trip.

My friend and I rode our bikes down I-5 to Olympia Washington and then cut across to the coast. We rode the whole coastline to san Francisco and then back up inland.

I put on 3,743 km on this trip which is about 2,740 miles

As soon as I organize my pics and make my write up I will detail it in my blog.

Suffice it to say....Oregon is awesome.!!!
