It’s been a very long journey, 27 years in fact, where my goal was to try to offer an ad free experience. Some years I got really close to being able to do that and things just didn’t workout. Hurdles that got in the way where the Dot Com crash in 2000, 2009 Great Financial Crisis and 2020 Pandemic to name a few. Now it’s AI, and trust me, that’s the greatest threat I’ve seen to not only websites but to human generated content I’ve ever seen. Well, I’m not going to have AI shut down Total Motorcycle if I or my readers can help it. AI content is everywhere now, from the top of Google Search to every AI prompt on your toaster. The replies you get from AI are stolen from human content without compensation. We as motorcyclists are a massively good community that helps each other out in uncertain times and now I’m asking for a little help and thankfully I still have the ability to give back, with an ad free experience.
While I say “I” in Total Motorcycle, it’s not just me alone, I have a lot of great volunteers and supporters over the decades and they ALL deserve credit and appreciation that words cannot express. See, I started Total Motorcycle to bring riders together, to bring non-riders into the fold, to support motorcycle businesses, brands and events. All which I’ve been able to do, give back and grow. Currently I do not get any revenue directly from any of these sources. Nothing from BMW, Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Harley-Davidson, Triumph, Kawasaki or any of the gear, events or motorcycle charities. I’d be happy to accept support if any is offered. But currently, all content is supported by just ads.
Ads are fine, they do pay the bandwidth bills, hosting and server costs, thank god. The issue I’m (and really all websites are) currently facing is AI. AI is stealing millions upon millions of pages, graphics and posts off TMW daily. When I say “AI” I mean over 1,500,000 AI bots and LLM’s. None of those pages generate revenue as ads are not seen at all. It’s not only a loss of content but a loss of bandwidth each pages, graphics and posts costs to serve to them. As I mentioned above, ask yourself, where do all the AI answers come from?
