Triumph has released another affordable and new rider friendly pair of motorcycles under 400cc, the new 2027 Triumph Bonneville T40 and 2027 Triumph Bonneville T40 Black. Pricing is expected around ~$6000 USD. Sounds like a deal. But what if I told you your paying DOUBLE the price for it in other countries? What what you say? Yes, you can buy it for ~$2800 USD. So is Double the Price still a deal and WHY is it DOUBLE the price for those in North America?
Let’s dig in to the new 2027 Triumph Bonneville T40 and 2027 Triumph Bonneville T40 Black models as well as into why it’s double the price.
The Bike
First, the exciting part. The new models. After all, this is a motorcycle website first, not a finance one. While I teach financial literacy, let’s stick to the non-number facts.
- New Bonneville T40 and T40 Black bring the authentic Bonneville experience to more riders than ever before
- Classic Bonneville styling, featuring the iconic silhouette, twin shocks and spoked wheels
- Designed and finished to Triumph’s standards of quality, craftsmanship and attention to detail
- New-generation 400cc TR Series engine delivers unmistakable Bonneville character with strong low-end torque
- Category-leading technology package featuring a new circular TFT instrument display, full connectivity and lean-sensitive rider aids
- Low seat height, dedicated chassis and relaxed ergonomics deliver confident, easy-going handling
Sounds pretty good so far and it looks good so far too. Unfortunately, USA and Canada will not receive the Aegean Blue / Fusion White color option if you, like me, would actually like to buy that color combo. But you still have that retro orange and light blue color scheme!
I really like how Triumph is leading the pack on offering up 400cc motorcycles. I have to give them real credit for TRYING to bring new riders into the sport with a friendly, affordable and good looking bike at a lower price point. They are still not making everyone happy here with their 400cc line, there’s complaints it’s built outside of the USA and made primarily in India (via the Bajaj Auto partnership) with additional production in Triumph’s Thailand factories and its Brazilian plants. That’s pretty global.
But hold the phone, maybe, just maybe it wasn’t made for you in North America as the primary client. Maybe you are just the other client and you should be lucky to get it rather than it being MADE FOR AMERICA and the rest of the world is just lucky to get it. Hmmmm… Is this why it’s double the price in the USA? Are America’s getting hosed? Would you rather have the option to buy it at double the price or not have it at all?? What do you think?
Like in my featured image for this article, I focused on it’s shadow. Because in a way, you ARE BUYING TWO MOTORCYCLES in cost, except you are only getting one tangible bike. See what I did there? That’s my professional corporate graphic designer side; and something AI can’t reproduce, originality and creativity.
So numbers.
Paying x2 the price irks me, I have to be honest. I don’t want to overpay for anything and I assume neither do you. But you are, you do and without knowing it, so let’s break that down:
India ex-showroom prices (converted to approximate USD) versus the official US MSRP prices:
| Model | India Price (₹) | Approx. India in USD | US MSRP | Difference (US higher by) |
| Speed 400 | ₹ 2,35,327 | ~$2,450 – $2,460 | $5,495 | ~$3,035 – $3,045 |
| Scrambler 400 X | ₹ 2,66,166 | ~$2,770 – $2,780 | $6,195 | ~$3,415 – $3,425 |
| Tracker 400 | ₹ 2,43,069 | ~$2,530 – $2,540 | $5,995 | ~$3,455 – $3,465 |
| Thruxton 400 | ₹ 2,76,552 | ~$2,875 – $2,890 | $6,295 | ~$3,405 – $3,420 |
| Scrambler 400 XC | ₹ 3,00,667 | ~$3,130 – $3,145 | $6,895 | ~$3,750 – $3,765 |
- The US versions are consistently $3,000 to $3,800 more expensive than the India equivalents.
- This large gap is normal due to differences in taxes, import duties, manufacturing location, emissions equipment, and market positioning.
Detailed Explanation of the Price Gap
1. Manufacturing Location & Production Costs
- India: The bikes are built by Bajaj Auto in India (mainly Chakan plant) at very low cost. Labor, components, and overhead are significantly cheaper. High local volume also spreads fixed costs.
- US market: Many units are sourced from India, Thailand, or Brazil. Even when made in India, the export version carries higher quality-control, packaging and logistics costs for overseas markets.
2. Import Duties / Tariffs (into the US)
- Base US duty on motorcycles in this displacement range is generally low or free, but additional tariffs (especially on Indian-origin goods in 2025–2026) can add 10 to 50% depending on the exact rules at the time of import.
- Shipping, insurance, and customs clearance add further costs.
3. Emissions, Safety & Homologation Equipment
- US models must meet stricter EPA emissions and NHTSA safety standards. This often requires different catalytic converters, mapping, evaporative emissions systems, lighting, and labeling all of which increase cost.
4. Taxes & Market Structure
- India: Ex-showroom price is before GST and local taxes (which still keep the final on-road price relatively low due to the mass-market nature of the segment).
- USA: MSRP includes the brand’s desired margin, dealer margin, freight, and preparation. There is no equivalent of India’s high-volume, low-margin pricing strategy.
5. Market Positioning & Brand Premium
- In India these are positioned as accessible premium motorcycles competing with Royal Enfield, Honda CB350, etc.
- In the US they are entry-level Triumphs competing with other imported mid-capacity bikes, so Triumph prices them to protect brand value and dealer profitability.
Approximate Cost Breakdown Table
| Cost Component | Approx. Amount (USD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| India ex-showroom base | $2,450 | Starting point |
| Manufacturing & export premium | +$400 – $600 | Higher QC, packaging, export logistics |
| Ocean freight + insurance + handling | +$300 – $450 | Shipping from India/Thailand to US |
| Import duties / tariffs | +$300 – $700 | Varies by origin and current tariff rules |
| US-specific emissions & homologation | +$200 – $400 | EPA/NHTSA compliance parts & testing |
| Triumph US distribution margin | +$600 – $900 | Corporate overhead, marketing, warranty reserve |
| Dealer margin + freight to dealer | +$700 – $1,000 | Typical US dealer markup and destination charges |
| Total estimated US landed + margin | ~$5,000 – $5,700 | Matches actual US MSRP range |
The same logic applies across the range (Scrambler 400 X, Tracker 400, Thruxton 400, Scrambler 400 XC), which is why the gap stays consistently in the $3,000 to $3,800 zone.
But wait, there’s a cheaper T40 model, the T4!!
As a note, I do want to point out a very interesting fact, the 2027 Triumph Bonneville T40 and T40 black have the same power Power 30–32 hp @ 7,000 rpm and torque 29 hp / 29 PS @ 7,000 rpm but different a cc (398cc vs 349cc). Also, India offers up an even cheaper T40, the T4 version. The 2027 Triumph Bonneville T4 is quite interesting as it offers something North America riders are also looking for, a basic, lower tech option.
(pictured here is the basic 2027 Triumph Bonneville T4 model)
| Feature | Bonneville T4 (base / India-exclusive) | Bonneville T40 (higher-spec) |
| Display | Colour LCD (circular 4-inch) | Colour TFT (circular 4-inch) with Heritage Mode |
| Navigation | Turn-by-turn navigation | Full-map navigation (via Triumph app) |
| Riding modes | 3 modes (typically Road, Rain, Eco) | 5 modes (Road, Rain, Eco + 2 fully customisable) |
| ABS / Traction control | Dual-channel ABS + traction control (standard, non-cornering) | Cornering (lean-sensitive / IMU-based) ABS and traction control |
| Cruise control | Not available | Standard |
| IMU | No | Yes |
| Other electronics | Basic smartphone connectivity | More advanced connectivity + USB-C charging in some reports |
| Colours | Solid colours only (e.g. Phantom Black, Carnival Red, Competition Green) | Two-tone schemes (e.g. Aegean Blue/Fusion White, Meriden Blue/Tangerine Orange, New England White/Jet Black) + hand-painted coach lines |
| Availability | India-exclusive | Also the basis for the global higher-spec model (though global T40 uses the larger ~398 cc engine) |
| Deliveries (India) | From second week of January 2027 | From second week of November 2026 |
Pricing for the T4 is ₹2,54,999 (~US$2,650–2,670) vs T40 ₹2,79,999 (~US$2,900–2,920). So for the USA, if the T4 was available, I’d guess it would be $500 to $600 cheaper and honestly, it would be the version I’d recommend based on the price, differences and simplicity of it.
To sum up
So is the new 2027 Triumph Bonneville T40‘s: Is Double the Price is still a deal? If $6000 doesn’t bother you, you can’t get to Indian and ship it across for under $3000. Then, it’s not bad. $6000 for a 400cc isn’t awesome and I’m sure used it will be well a loved bike, but if you are in the market for a motorbike like this, then choices are limited. Otherwise, buy a bigger engine bike for just a little more. The Moto Guzzi 850cc V7 is such an example for $9900 or one of these beauties below.

TRIUMPH INTRODUCES THE NEW BONNEVILLE T40 AND T40 BLACK: AUTHENTIC BONNEVILLE EXPERIENCE
Triumph Motorcycles introduces the new Bonneville T40 and T40 Black, extending the appeal of the iconic Bonneville to more riders than ever before. Powered by a new iteration of the 400cc TR Series engine, the new models combine timeless design and beautiful craftsmanship with contemporary capability, delivering an authentic Bonneville riding experience.
The latest additions to Triumph’s Bonneville and 400cc line-ups, the Bonneville T40 and T40 Black capture the timeless appeal and unmistakable character that have defined the Bonneville for generations. Both models embody the spirit of 1960s cool through their authentic proportions, beautiful finish and enduring style. Signature Bonneville design cues include the sculpted teardrop fuel tank, classic round headlight, traditional engine profile, spoked wheels and twin-shock rear suspension.
Crafted with the meticulous attention to detail that has long defined the Bonneville name, the new T40 and T40 Black deliver authentic style and exceptional quality throughout. Heritage-inspired two-tone paint schemes, hand-painted coach lining and premium materials create a timeless and distinctive appearance, while beautifully finished details such as the brushed peashooter silencer and classically shaped aluminium engine covers reinforce their unmistakable Bonneville style.
Powered by a dedicated version of Triumph’s 400cc TR Series engine, the T40 features a unique engine tune developed exclusively for the Bonneville, delivering a relaxed, torque-rich power delivery. Combined with a distinctive exhaust note, the result is a riding experience that remains true to the character of the Bonneville.
Setting a new benchmark for technology in the category, the Bonneville T40 and T40 Black combine classic Bonneville styling with an unprecedented level of rider-focused technology. A new 4-inch circular TFT display provides full smartphone connectivity, including navigation, phone and music control, while five riding modes, cruise control, lean-sensitive Optimised Cornering ABS and Optimised Cornering Traction Control deliver a level of functionality and rider assistance normally associated with larger-capacity motorcycles.
The Bonneville T40 and T40 Black have been developed to deliver an accessible and confidence-inspiring riding experience. Relaxed ergonomics, a low seat height, which can be reduced to just 770mm with an accessory low seat, and lightweight handling make the motorcycles approachable for a wide range of riders. Complemented by a modern chassis and lightweight aluminium rims, the result is easy manoeuvrability, agile dynamics and everyday riding confidence.
Steve Sargent, Chief Product Officer, Triumph Motorcycles, said: “The Bonneville is one of the most significant motorcycles in Triumph’s history, so introducing a new model carrying that name comes with a responsibility to get it right. From the outset, our ambition for the T40 and T40 Black was not simply to create a smaller Bonneville, but to create a motorcycle that delivers the style, character and ownership experience riders expect from a genuine Bonneville. Bringing that experience to more riders is strategically important for Triumph, particularly as lower-capacity motorcycle categories continue to grow around the world.”
“Working closely with Bajaj, we challenged ourselves to retain the details and qualities that make a Bonneville special, from the proportions and finish to traditional touches such as hand-painted coach lining, while also introducing a level of technology and rider-focused innovation not previously seen in this category. The result is a motorcycle that stays true to the values that have defined the Bonneville for generations while opening the experience to even more riders.”
AUTHENTIC AND ICONIC DESIGN
The Bonneville T40 carries the unmistakable design DNA of the larger models in the Bonneville family. Flowing lines, balanced proportions and heritage-inspired details create a classic silhouette that is instantly recognisable as a Bonneville. The teardrop fuel tank, round headlight, longer mudguards and peashooter silencer define the overall shape, while classically styled forks, twin rear shocks and spoked wheels complete the look. Together, these elements bring the timeless appeal of 1960s Bonneville design to today’s riders.
At the heart of the T40’s iconic silhouette is its teardrop fuel tank. Its flowing shape and balanced proportions give the motorcycle a confident, elegant presence from every angle. Heritage-inspired paint schemes, finished with hand-painted coach lining, emphasise the form of the tank and reinforce the attention to detail. Classic rubber knee pads and the iconic three-bar Triumph tank badge bring together design, tradition and craftsmanship.
Central to the T40’s front profile is its classic round headlight. Creating an instantly recognisable front end associated with Bonnevilles past and present, the LED headlight incorporates a distinctive daytime running light signature, combining modern functionality and visibility with the timeless simplicity of the traditional Bonneville design.
The clean, uncluttered profile of the 400cc TR Series engine makes it a focal point of the T40’s silhouette. Bright machined cooling fins on the cylinder head and large finned header roses provide a nod to the Bonnevilles of the past. Classically shaped clutch and alternator covers are finished in brushed aluminium, adding a premium appearance that complements the motorcycle’s timeless styling.
Traditional spoked wheels provide the finishing touch to the T40’s classic Bonneville design. The 18-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels combine lightweight aluminium rims with traditional steel spokes, providing strength and durability while helping the handling remain easy and agile. The open design of the wheels also complements the clean lines and balanced proportions of the motorcycle.
The suspension set-up further reinforces the T40’s distinctive Bonneville silhouette. Classically styled front forks give the motorcycle a refined and instantly familiar front profile, while the twin rear shocks preserve the open, uncluttered appearance that is a hallmark of Bonneville design. Together, the forks and twin shocks ensure the T40 remains true to its heritage and recognisable as a Bonneville from every angle.
METICULOUS ATTENTION TO DETAIL
Each Bonneville T40 and T40 Black is finished by hand, with close attention paid to the materials, finishes and smaller details throughout the motorcycle. Deep paint finishes and hand-painted coach lining feature across the three two-tone T40 colour schemes, retaining a traditional technique synonymous with the Bonneville range.
The choice of component finishes distinguishes the two models. On the T40, chrome-finished mirrors and grab hoop are combined with brushed aluminium heel guards and a brushed steel exhaust system. On the T40 Black, components are painted or powder-coated black to complement its darker overall treatment.
Modern engineering has been carefully concealed to preserve a clean appearance. Cables and hoses are routed out of sight, allowing the uncluttered profile of the single-cylinder TR Series engine to remain a prominent part of the motorcycle’s design.
Triumph branding appears on key components rather than relying solely on prominent badges. It is embossed into the handlebar clamp and front mudguard and also appears on the engine covers and within the front and rear lights. These details become apparent on closer inspection and contribute to the overall quality of execution.
The Bonneville T40 is available in three distinctive heritage-inspired colour schemes. Aegean Blue and Fusion White provide a fresh, clean interpretation of traditional Bonneville style, with the bright two-tone finish highlighting the flowing lines of the sculpted fuel tank. The Meriden Blue and Tangerine Orange scheme offers a bolder treatment, combining heritage tones with a vibrant accent that draws attention to the tank profile and hand-painted coach line.
New England White and Jet Black completes the range with a more understated contrast, creating a refined and timeless appearance.
The T40 Black introduces a darker, more purposeful interpretation of the same classic Bonneville design. Finished in Matt Pewter Grey and Matt Phantom Black, it features gloss-black aluminium wheel rims contrasted by bright steel spokes. Powder-coated engine casings, together with a blacked-out header and peashooter silencer, give the T40 Black a subtle modern edge while retaining the traditional proportions and recognisable design cues of the Bonneville family.
BONNEVILLE CHARACTER FROM A DEDICATED 400CC ENGINE
The Bonneville T40 and T40 Black are powered by the latest iteration of Triumph’s liquid-cooled 400cc TR Series engine. A revised cylinder head and dedicated Bonneville engine tune give the single-cylinder engine its own performance and character, combining modern performance and intuitive throttle response with the torque-rich delivery expected of a Bonneville.
Courtesy of a revised cylinder head and dedicated Bonneville engine tune, the T40 delivers increased torque lower in the rev range, with peak torque of 36 Nm at 5,000 rpm providing strong drive and a distinctive feel. Peak power of 32 PS is delivered at 7,000 rpm, placing the emphasis on accessible performance at everyday engine speeds.
Three pre-configured riding modes, Road, Rain and Eco, are joined by two customisable modes. Each mode adjusts the throttle response, traction control and ABS to suit different conditions and rider preferences. Riders can select their preferred modes and add them to a quick-access menu on the circular TFT display. Both models feature cruise control, reducing rider fatigue, as well as Lean-sensitive Optimised Cornering ABS and Optimised Cornering Traction Control, which both provide additional support when cornering in varying conditions.
The engine has also been developed to produce a distinctive exhaust note, with clear firing pulses from the single-cylinder engine. The peashooter silencer adds depth to the sound, while a lower idle speed further contributes to the T40’s relaxed Bonneville character. Both the Bonneville T40 and T40 Black are A2 licence-compliant as standard, bringing their torque-rich performance and dedicated Bonneville engine character to a wider range of riders.
CLASS LEADING TECH WITH CLASSIC CHARM
A new, class-leading four-inch, full-colour TFT display is housed within a circular instrument unit, integrating the technology without disrupting the traditional Bonneville design. Fans of the traditional clocks can also select Heritage Mode, which replaces the standard screen layout with an analogue-style display inspired by traditional Bonneville instruments.
Key riding information, including gear position, indicators, ambient temperature and fuel level, is displayed prominently, while the centre of the screen provides access to connected phone functions and motorcycle settings. Five customisable widgets can be configured and accessed through the backlit left-hand switch cube, giving riders quick access to the functions they use most frequently.
Full map navigation is included as standard and powered by the new Triumph Navigation App. The TFT display presents a full map view and speed limit information, while favourite destinations, points of interest and recent searches can all be accessed directly through the display.
The Triumph Navigation App also allows riders to plan routes before setting off, with functionality to discover routes, add waypoints and manage journey details. Routes can be saved, imported via GPX files and shared with other riders, with navigation information displayed directly on the motorcycle’s TFT screen.
Phone connectivity is provided as standard and operated through the TFT display and left-hand switch cube. Riders can answer calls, access contacts and control music playback without handling their phone directly. For quicker access, media functions can also be assigned to the customisable widgets.
The full LED lighting system includes a distinctive daytime running light signature, while the headlight automatically switches between daytime running light and dipped beam. Self-cancelling indicators add further convenience, while Emergency Deceleration Warning automatically flashes the rear light during heavy braking to alert other road users that the motorcycle is slowing rapidly.
Braking is provided by a twin-piston front brake caliper and a one-piece-style front brake disc. Braided brake lines support consistent braking performance and a precise feel at the lever, while Optimised Cornering ABS takes lean angle into account when the brakes are applied. A USB-C charging socket is also fitted, allowing compatible devices to be charged while riding.
RELAXED AND EASY, YET AGILE AND REWARDING.
The Bonneville T40 features an upright riding position, with the handlebars and footpegs positioned to create a natural riding posture. A classic bench seat remains a defining feature of the T40. Generous foam padding provides comfort for both rider and pillion, while the ribbed seat design reinforces the motorcycle’s heritage styling.
With a seat height of 790mm and a ready-to-ride weight of 191kg, the Bonneville T40 has compact dimensions and an accessible riding position. An accessory low seat, available in black or brown, reduces seat height by a further 20mm to 770mm.
Everyday practicality has also been considered, with a centre stand fitted as standard. As well as making it easier to store the motorcycle upright, it also simplifies routine cleaning and chain maintenance.
GLOBALLY SUCCESSFUL 400CC PLATFORM
The Bonneville T40 and T40 Black join a 400cc platform that has already achieved significant global success, with more than 60,000 motorcycles sold across over 50 countries worldwide. The range has played a key role in bringing new riders to the Triumph brand and contributing to the company’s record global sales growth.
Joining the Speed 400, Scrambler 400 X, Scrambler 400 XC, Tracker 400 and Thruxton 400, the T40 introduces one of the company’s most enduring motorcycle names to the range. With six distinct motorcycles now available, the platform extends across multiple categories while continuing to deliver the quality, character and individuality that have become hallmarks of Triumph’s 400cc line-up.
ON THE ROAD
A comprehensive range of Genuine Triumph Accessories will be available from launch, allowing owners to tailor the T40 to their individual requirements. The range includes low and comfort seats and classic panniers, enhancing comfort, practicality and everyday usability.
Designed for everyday riding, the Bonneville T40 combines durable finishes with Triumph’s renowned standards of quality and attention to detail. Class-leading service intervals of 10,000 miles (16,000km) help reduce ownership costs and minimise time off the road.
Pricing for the Bonneville T40 and T40 Black will be announced in early 2027, ahead of the first motorcycles arriving in Triumph dealerships from Spring 2027.
