Power in its DNA…

The performance of a superbike with the agility of a naked

For lovers of naked supersports and those who always lust after “more power”, Aprilia has created the Tuono V4 R ABS, a motorbike with the invincible heart of an RSV4 and a feline body designed to excel under the fiercest acceleration and braking in and to cling on through any type of bend and simply devour straight sections of road.

Tuono V4 R ABS
THE EVOLUTION OF THE SUPERBIKE WITH UPRIGHT HANDLEBARS

In 2009 Aprilia, revolutionised the superbike segment with the introduction of the innovative, unique RSV4 which to this day remains the benchmark. This bike won four world championship titles in the SBK series. The Tuono V4 R arrived in 2011, a direct descendant of the unbeatable RSV4. It was the most powerful, technological and sophisticated naked ever produced, the most mind-blowing, wicked and efficient machine ever created and was dedicated to those aficionados who longed for a bike that was, to put it simply, “excellent” in every way. The know-how gained from years of experience of winning at the highest level allowed Aprilia to go that bit further: the new Tuono V4 R ABS is better performing, more fun, more efficient and safer. Just one version is available. It comes with the full electronics package fitted as standard and there is a choice of two colours (black or white). The new Tuono V4 R ABS raises thesupersports bar again by also being more comfortable for road use.

IMPROVED COMFORT AND PERFORMANCE
The Tuono V4 R ABS is the heir to the bike acclaimed by the world motorcycling press as the naked that was the most exciting, efficient and fun to ride with a level of performance andsophistication never before seen. Not only does the new bike get all the important up-dates introduced with great success in early 2013 to the RSV4 Factory ABS and RSV4 R ABS, it also features a new saddle and a revised standard suspension set-up (fully adjustable) to improve comfort during road use. Other rider comfort changes can be seen in the new tank which now holds 18.5 litres and in pads on the side of the tank which increase feel for the rider under braking and while cornering.

THE MOST FAST AND SPORTY NAKED OF ALL, ORIGINATING FROM THE MYTHICAL RSV4, WINNER OF FIVE TITLES IN THE SBK SUPERBIKE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, IS NOW EVEN MORE INCISIVE, SOPHISTICATED AND SAFE. PERFORMANCE IS EVEN GREATER (170 HP) AND THE EXCEPTIONAL aPRC ELECTRONIC SYSTEM PACKAGE HAS BEEN FURTHER IMPROVED. GREATER ACTIVE SAFETY AND DECELERATING POWER, THANKS TO THE HIGHLY ADVANCED BRAKING SYSTEM WITH MULTIMAP ABS, ALSO DEACTIVABLE.
TUONO V4 R ABS IS EVEN MORE COMFORTABLE AND LIVEABLE, TO BE THE BEST NAKED ALSO ON THE ROAD.

Tuono V4 R ABS is the heir of an absolute sporty naked tradition, born from an innovative idea in 2002 that found its initial great expression in the lethal Tuono 1000 R, the first true high performance naked, closely derived from RSV mille, the super two cylinder bike among the most loved and wanted by sporty motorcyclists of the new millennium. And this is what Aprilia Tuono has always been: a superbike with high handlebar, unbeatable on the track and such fun on the road. The Tuono project has followed this same path also in 2011, the year of the radical change. In fact, in 2009 Aprilia revolutionises the superbike segment, introducing the innovative and unique RSV4 which from then had always been the benchmark of sports bikes, capable of winning five titles in four year in the selective SBK world championship. In 2011, in line with tradition, Tuono V4 R arrives, the direct offshoot of the unbeatable RSV4: it is the most powerful, technological and sophisticated naked that has ever been made, the most thrilling, bad and incisive ever seen before, dedicated to the most integralist lovers looking for a bike that simply embodies “excellence” in all its forms. The only one in the segment that can fight and win against the most awarded faired rivals on the track with all the comfort and fun that a high handlebar allows, thanks its excellent chassis, the power of the more than 167 HP V4 engine and the unequalled aPRC electronic control package.

The know-how acquired in years of winning competitions at maximum levels has meant that Aprilia can go even further: Tuono V4 R ABS has an even greater performance, is more fun, incisive and safe. Available in just the one version with the best of applicable electronics as a standard feature and in two different colours (black or white), Tuono V4 R ABS lifts the sports measuring rod up a notch while still being even more comfortable for riding on the road.

2015 Aprilia Tuono V4 R APRC ABS www.Totalmotorcycle.com Key Features

V4 of 65°
UNIQUE ENGINE CHARACTERISTICS

Extremely compact, as slim as a twin-cylinder and installed in an ultra-compact chassis, the 65° V4 engine on the V4 R ABS is the epitome of Italian engineering ingenuity. The Tuono gives away very little to its RSV4 sibling in terms of pure performance, but in exchange offers agreater fluidity that make it more enjoyable and rewarding to ride on the road and when carrying a passenger. To achieve these results, a number of different modifications were made to the Aprilia V4 engine: new valve timing diagram, fixed intake ducts now 20 mm longer, crankshaft flywheel with increased inertia for improved smoothness and overall balance, shortened gear ratios for the first three gears and engine speed at maximum power reduced to 11,500 rpm Thanks to triple mapping selectable directly from the handlebar, the character of the bike can be modified to suit the rider’s personal riding style or the track conditions at any time.

• T-TRACK: no compromise. All 170 CV of power available at the slightest twist of the throttle.
• S-SPORT: maximum fun on the open road. Smooth power delivery across the rev band for fun yet less demanding riding.
• R-ROAD: usability in all conditions. Smooth delivery and power attenuated by 25% across the rev range. Greater usability in all conditions. Ideal for the city or wet road conditions.

Brembo M432 monobloc calipers
STATE-OF-THE-ART FRAME

The aluminium racing type frame and swingarm provide a perfect balance of torsional and flexional stiffness, superb dynamic equilibrium and efficiency as well as exceptional stability and directionality for optimum rider feel. The mind-blowing new naked from Aprilia comes equipped with the best components available on the market such as the Brembo M432 front brake system with radial calipers, aluminium wheels with an all-new three spoke design weighing 2 Kg less than the five spoke version, fully adjustable Sachs upside down front fork with 43 mm stanchions and one-by-one technology, a Sachs shock absorber with separate piggy back nitrogen canister featuring adjustable spring preload, compression and rebound damping and length, to modify the set-up of the bike to suit different riding styles, roads and loads – including a passenger! The choice of dual-compound tyres is also new, with three different sizes approved for the rear wheel: the 190/55 tyre fitted as standard can be replaced by a 200/55 or a 190/50 tyre to explore the full performance potential of the bike – even on the track.

aPRC
MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY AND PLEASURE TO RIDE

Fitted with a steering damper as standard and the second generation aPRC dynamic control system to assist the rider in achieving maximum performance. This includes:
• aTC with 8 settings that range from those for conservative use on the road to full on race mode

• aWC, specially adapted for the weight of the Tuono V4, with 3 settings to manage the most extreme wheelie conditions yet gradually set the rear tyre back on the road or track ;
• aQS for ultra-fast gear shifting without closing the throttle or using the clutch.

• aLC for lightning fast take offs. Simultaneously pressing both buttons on the joystick on the left hand handlebar arms the system, as confirmed by the specific message on the display. From this moment on, all 170 horsepower of the beast from Noale are ready to slingshot the Tuono V4 R ABS like a missile as soon as the rider releases the clutch.

On the Aprilia RSV4 R ABS, the aPRC system has been further developed: it now integrates even better with the full Ride by Wire electronic multi-map V4 engine management system to meet the specific needs of both road users and professional race riders. The performance of the system provides smoother power delivery for improved high speed cornering but does not penalise traction on exiting low speed bends. In addition to this second generation APRC, the Tuono V4 R also adopts a highly advanced ABS multi-map system that ensures not justmaximum safety on the road but even better performance on the track.

2015 Aprilia Tuono V4 R APRC ABS www.Totalmotorcycle.com Features and Benefits

The evolution of the superbike with the high handlebar

Tuono V4 R ABS, the heir of the motorbike elected by trade press at global level as the most exciting, incisive and fun naked ever, reaching performance and sophistication levels never seen before. Not only does it boast all the important updates successfully introduced in 2013 on RSV4 Factory ABS and RSV4 R ABS but it also has a new rider seat and standard suspension setup (fully adjustable) reviewed for increased comfort on the road. The aim is to increase sports performance without sacrificing comfort when riding along a road: this aspect is ever more important for those who use the bike for daily purposes. This is why the seat has gained extra padding while the standard setting of the suspension now better absorbs the irregularities of public roads. This has done nothing to stop the ample possibilities of customisation, to have maximum rigour and precision in a truly riding-cum-racing experience. Even the on-board ergonomics have changed, thanks to the arrival of the increased capacity tank now holding 18.5 litres and the side panels redesigned in their shape to give the rider a better feeling when going around bends and braking.

State of the art

It’s quite likely that no other naked exists that’s as sporty and bad as Tuono V4; its close origins with the bike that won the SBK world championship five times are more than obvious in its twin spar frame made with cast and pressed elements in brushed aluminium, a structure with an excellent balance between torsional and flexional rigidity that envelopes the 65° V4 engine, proudly left in full view. The same construction technology used for the frame has also been used for the swingarm. A state of the art chassis, already highly appreciated on the previous version which is why it is used, as is, on Tuono V4 R ABS.
The suspension has been selected to make this Aprilia the best naked for the track without compromising comfort when riding on the road. The 43 mm upside down Sachs fork has separated “one by one” hydraulic compression and rebound adjustments besides having the settings of the spring preload on both stanchions. The standard setup has been redefined to ensure a more comfortable response on open public roads. The Sachs damper with built-in piggy back allows hydraulic adjustments in compression and rebound not to mention spring preload adjustments. Also its basic setting takes into greater consideration the use of the bike on the road.

Absolute electronics

Tuono V4 R ABS receives the important updates and tunings of the already exceptional aPRC, that made their debut in 2013 on RSV4 Factory ABS and RSV4 R ABS.
As known, aPRC (Aprilia Performance Ride Control) is the patented control system package derived directly from the winning technology used in the Superbike world championship, the most complete and refined among those currently in the market, the only one that has the exclusive self-calibrating tyre circumference function and wheelie control. aPRC, standard feature on Tuono V4 R ABS, integrates better still with the fine full Ride by Wire multimap electronic management of the powerful V4 engine. As it did before, it benefits from a specific calibration for the requirements of Tuono V4 but has been improved upon and refined even more to find maximum enjoyment on the road and maximum performance on the track.

The aPRC used on Tuono V4 R ABS comprises:
– aTC: Aprilia Traction Control, the traction control system that can be adjusted on the fly, without closing the throttle, to 8 levels thanks to a practical joystick on the left handlebar, gains even higher performing and refined operating logic. Now the allowed percentage of skidding also differs according to the speed round a bend: The behaviour of the system is even more uniform and guarantees a high level of support in turns at high speed without penalising traction coming out of slow turns.
– aWC: Aprilia Wheelie Control with 3 settings, has been recalibrated to be even more sporty in map 1, while guaranteeing wheelying in high accelerations followed by a softer touch of the front wheel on the ground;
– aLC: Aprilia Launch Control, for use on the track only, with 3 settings;
– aQS: Aprilia Quick Shift, a system for extremely fast gear shifting without shutting the throttle and using the clutch.

Besides the second generation aPRC, Tuono V4 R ABS is also fitted with a highly technological ABS, the anti-lock wheel system designed to guarantee maximum safety on the road without diminishing performance on the track in any way. The ABS 9MP unit, developed in collaboration with Bosch, constitutes the maximum point of distinction and technology available today. The system, weighing a mere 2 kg, adopts an intervention strategy called RLM (Rear wheel Lift-up Mitigation) that limits wheelying of the rear wheel when hard braking. In addition it can be disconnected and adjusted on 3 settings by easily accessing the instrument’s control menu:

– Level 1: it is dedicated to the track but is also approved for road use. It acts on both wheels and guarantees maximum possible performance even when braking sharply at any speed. This setting takes nothing away from the pleasure and performance of “pushing the envelope”. With this strategy the RLM is deactivated.
– Level 2: it is dedicated to sporty riding on roads, it acts on both wheels and is combined with the tip over system RLM whose intervention is progressive based on vehicle speed.
– Level 3: dedicated to riding on surfaces with poor grip, it acts on both wheels and is combined with the advanced tip over RLM system.

Each of these three ABS mappings can be combined with any of the three engine maps (Track, Sport, Road), in order to allow riders with different experience and skill levels to find the best possible combination for their style.

Tuono V4 R ABS gains a front braking system with Brembo M432 radial mounted monoblock callipers and 320 mm steel discs with reduced height braking tracks and asymmetrical perforation resulting in a more modulated braking power.

A racing engine

Tuono V4 R is the only naked driven by a V 65° four-cylinder engine with unique characteristics. The narrow V architecture has made it possible to make an engine that is extremely compact lengthways which helps to centralise weights and to have a compact chassis. The monobloc aluminium crankcase with integrated cylinder liners ensures maximum rigidity and consistent performance. the gearbox is extractable with wet sump lubrication with oil in the crankcase. Timing adopts innovative kinematics: the chain only moves the intake camshaft that returns motion to the exhaust camshaft by means of a single gear. With this solution we can have highly compact cylinder heads, reducing engine’s cross-section especially where the frame spars pass which, as a result, are exceptionally tapered. A countershaft dampens the vibrations even more than in the 90° V engine.
Full Ride by Wire eliminates any direct connection between the throttle grip and the throttle valves, which are entirely controlled by a latest generation Marelli control unit that also controls ignition and the four injectors. Each bank is powered by two throttle bodies controlled by a dedicated servomotor. This means that the aperture of the throttle valves and, as a consequence, the quantity of fuel injected, can be controlled independently. A solution that opens up practically infinite possibilities for power delivery control and works hand in hand with the aPRC system.

Performance increases

The Tuono V4 R ABS engine, equivalent to that of the RSV4 ABS, has been updated and improved, paying particular attention to reducing internal friction and sump ventilation. Both maximum power and maximum torque increase which at present are 170 HP at 11,500 rpm and 111.5 Nm at 9,500 rpm which is also thanks to a redesigned exhaust system and highly tuned electronic management. The three mappings (Track, Sport and Road), were matched to the power and torque specifications of the V4 in order to obtain an even fuller and richer power output at any engine speed.

Compared to the RSV4 ABS engine, the unit installed on Tuono V4 R ABS boasts some rather particular characteristics:

” Revised timing system
” Fixed intake ducts 20 mm longer.
” Crankshaft flywheel with increased inertia for improved smoothness and overall balance.
” Shorter ratios in the first three gears
” Maximum power dropped to 11,500 rpm
