2015 Honda NM4 Vultus Review

NM4 – don’t be surprised if people ask, “What movie is that from?!” …

Welcome to the world of the limited-edition NM4. The near future where fantasy is reality. And imagination with inspired engineering make every moment feel like a cinematic adventure.

With a twist of the throttle, the 670cc fuel-injected engine engages. Reflections from the street lamps on the sculpted front end come faster and faster with each upshift of the Automatic Dual-Clutch Transmission. Integrated saddlebags stow away everything you need to escape and almost anything you discover along the way. Strong Anti-Lock Brakes help you avoid the hazards of a cluttered urban wasteland. Images of everyday life fade away. Your brave new journey has begun.

Think of it as an exclamation mark on wheels! With its stealth fighter-styling, the NM4 won’t be mistaken for anything else. The outrageous anime appearance represents the vision of a young, skunkworks design team from deep within Honda R&D, but the innovation didn’t end with the styling. From the passenger seat that offers double duty as an adjustable rider backrest, to the reactive dash with 25 colours, to the angular headlight framed with a stylish LED definition line, the NM4 screams new thinking. Utilizing the long-stroke NC series’ 745 cc engine which delivers strong, low-end torque through an advanced dual-clutch transmission with fully automatic mode to its fat 200 section rear tire, the NM4 backs up its extreme styling with a rewarding riding experience. And for those who want to raise eyebrows further, the NM4 offers creature comforts too, with well-placed floorboards and generous storage compartments in the fairing that include a power outlet to keep your personal electronics charged. The saddlebags integrate nicely into the NM4’s unique lines, completing the long distance capability. So whether you’re turning heads downtown Gotham or heading off to fight crime in a post-apocalyptic Metropolis, the NM4 will prove to be a trusty sidekick.

The young social media-engaged urbanite lives a digital existence in a fast moving world. And they are totally engaged by the new.

Without question, the NM4 Vultus is just that. It is avant-garde in both the way it looks but also, and perhaps more importantly, in the detail work that has gone into creating a unique riding experience. The reactive dashboard – with colours that change depending on driving mode – and flip-up pillion seat that acts as rider backrest are just two examples. Vultus is Latin for appearance, expression or face.

The NM4 Vultus, with its LED lights, future-shock style and stealth bomber silhouette presents a look that will not have been seen in any cityscape this side of an anime movie. Underneath the brooding menace is a rock-solid chassis and engine package. Packed with low-friction technology, its 745cc twin-cylinder engine is canted forward, creating space and a low centre of gravity. Delivering strong low and mid-range power and torque for smooth acceleration coupled with excellent fuel economy, its also equipped as standard with Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), giving the rider options between automatic twist-and-go D and S mode plus trigger-operated computer game-style manual MT mode.

Intuitive and easy to use, it adds to the futuristic appeal of the NM4 Vultus and is the perfect complement to the engines gutsy, usable performance.

Engine/Drivetrain

Designed to be light, compact, extremely stingy on fuel and to conserve resources during manufacturing, the liquid-cooled, inline-twin engine incorporates numerous advanced and patented technologies..
To ensure strong acceleration, ease-of-use in the city and a relaxed character on the highway, the engine delivers exceptionally strong low-rpm performance. The unique design creates a muscular, easy-to-use powerband..
To give the engine a satisfying and distinctive sound and feel, engineers thought way outside the box. Twin balance shafts counteract vibration from higher rpm inertia, making the engine feel more refined, yet still with the distinct “throb” delivered by its 270° firing order. The intake-port layout was carefully designed to create an intentional interference between adjacent ports, resulting in subtle combustion variations. In addition, the timing for the opening and closing of the intake valves was set differently for each cylinder. The result? An engine that connects with the senses..
The engine’s inline cylinders are canted forward to help create a low overall centre of gravity for nimble, confidence-inspiring handling..
Through the use of friction-reducing technologies, integrated components (such as running the water pump off the camshaft), precise PGM-FI electronic fuel-injection and efficient combustion, the NM4 engine delivers exceptional fuel economy..
The engine’s efficient use of fuel enables the use of a smaller-volume, more-compact fuel tank that still allows ample riding range while giving engineers extra freedom to re-think the optimal placement of other components..
The exhaust catalytic converter sits directly beneath the exhaust ports and is activated early when the engine starts. This design lets the combustion gas pass through the catalyst while it is at its hottest, thereby maximizing purification efficiency..
The Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) includes two automatic drive modes, normal (D) and sport (S), as well as a manual mode with trigger-style shifting. Offering consistent, fast and seamless gear changes the twin clutches transfer drive from one gear to the next with minimal interruption, reducing gear change shock and pitching of the machine. Gear changes feel direct and smooth..

Chassis/Suspension

The lightweight, diamond-shaped steel-tube frame was carefully designed to be very sturdy while also allowing just enough flexibility to respond smoothly to changing road surfaces. This “tuned flexibility” produces a smooth ride while also generating a strong feel for what the bike is doing..
Low seat height of only 650 mm and well placed floorboards put the rider firmly in control, with handlebars just a relaxed reach away. The high leverage handlebars and super-low centre-of-gravity further increase rider confidence..
Honda’s two-channel ABS (Anti-lock Braking) system provides added confidence during sudden stops or when the road is wet or slippery..
Lightweight aluminum swingarm improves suspension reaction and control..

Additional Features

The digital dash changes mood depending on the drive mode selected, with subtle colour changes from grey in Neutral, to light blue in D, to vibrant pink in S, ultimately to aggressive red in manual mode. The rider can also choose between five other tonal ranges of colour – 25 individual colours altogether to personalize their dash..
The rear pillion seat flips upright when not in use, locking to provide the rider with a secure backrest and an almost fighter-pilot riding position. Its angle can be adjusted through three positions and it slides back/forward 25 mm through four settings, to fine-tune cockpit comfort..
Convenient storage spaces are concealed in the front bodywork. The left compartment opens with the ignition key and features 1-litre of storage space plus a 12V DC adaptor to recharge personal electronics. The right compartment has 3-litres of storage and opens with the push of a recessed, triangulated button..
Lighting is full LED with front indicators built in to the bodywork while the angular headlight is framed with a stylish LED definition line..
Matte black paint and componentry is complemented by carefully-placed glimpses of burnished aluminum..
