OWNERSHIP ADVANTAGE
Exhilarating performance. Carefree ownership.
There are some clear advantages to going electric: no need to visit the gas station, no oil, no exhaust, etc. In addition, there are a host of benefits experienced by Zero owners on a regular basis that are not as obvious. Behind the design of each cutting edge model is a philosophy of elegant simplicity that keeps the weight of the motorcycle low, virtually eliminates all routine powertrain maintenance and yields stealthy acceleration. The result is an incredibly exhilarating ride and an ownership experience that appreciates mile after mile.
Zero Motorcycle ownership – savings over time
A Long Term Perspective
As a premium brand, Zero designs each motorcycle with the sort of quality and integrity that inspires an exceptional riding experience. Beyond that, the upfront cost of a Zero is not what it appears to be when compared against its traditional internal combustion counterparts. Each mile ridden on a Zero is considerably less expensive, making it considerably more enjoyable, due to the elimination of routine powertrain maintenance and no gas expenses. As it turns out, when compared to other premium brands, a Zero starts saving the owner money on gas and maintenance from day one. In fact, over the life of their motorcycle many Zero owners actually save more than they would have if they had purchased a comparable internal combustion model.
Zero Routine Powertrain Maintenance
All Zero motorcycles feature a direct drive, maintenance-free powertrain. As an incredibly efficient system, direct drive channels power directly from the motor to the rear wheel via a strong and silent, constant tension belt. Not only does direct drive minimize friction loss by eliminating clutches and gears, but it also helps eliminate the need for routine powertrain maintenance and reduces the weight of the motorcycle.

CHARGE UP TO 6X FASTER
The Charge Tank option funnels up to 85 miles of riding into the Zero S for every hour of charging when plugged into a Level 2 charge station. One cup of coffee now equals ~30 miles of riding. Or, charge fully in as little as an hour depending on battery size.
CHARGING. MEET HOUSEHOLD OUTLET.
No special charging equipment required. Your standard household outlets just became “fueling” stations that deliver daily rides at a fraction of the cost of gasoline. Plug in at night and start every day with a full “tank.”
RIDE MORE. MAINTAIN LESS.
Goodbye costly powertrain maintenance and stale waiting room donuts. Sophisticated. Simple. The Z-Force® powertrain eliminates the greasy mess of fossil burners. No oil, spark plugs, clutches, filters, chain adjustments or expensive tune-ups. Instead, a carbon fiber belt directly connects the rear wheel to a motor that uses a single moving part to deliver torque at levels beyond conventional superbikes.
Always advancing. Code for the Z-Force® powertrain is constantly refined to deliver improved performance. The Zero App easily delivers the upgrades using your mobile device.
Longest Range Electric Motorcycle
The Zero SR is our farthest traveling model (and the longest-range production electric motorcycle on earth). At its core is the highest power and energy density battery in the EV industry. The higher the battery capacity, the more range.
Select the battery size that works for you. Ride over 200 miles city / 100 miles highway using the highest capacity Zero SR ZF14.4 battery coupled with the Power Tank accessory (adds an additional 3.6 kWh). Or, shed weight and gain storage space with the Zero S ZF7.2.
HARGING THAT FITS YOUR LIFESTYLE
Charging on models FX, FXS, S, and DS requires no additional equipment or installations, and the SR/F can access any outlet with the included EVSE cable. Bring your Zero home, plug it into your nearest outlet. Done.
Start every day with a full “Tank”
Ditch the gas station. Plug in at night and wake up every morning with a full “tank.” Per hour of charging, a Zero takes you farther than just about any EV in the world. As a result, most owners use a household outlet to “fuel” their daily rides.
Charge Even Faster
Add dozens of miles of range while grabbing coffee. Adding the Rapid Charge option to SR/F boosts charging by 6 kW, up to a staggering 12 kW capacity. 2015 and newer Zero S and Zero DS models can be complemented with a 6 kW Charge Tank. The Charge Tank and SR/F use the EV standard J1772 connection that is uniform throughout the rapidly expanding network of Level 2 (220 V) public and home charging stations. Zero’s fastest charging options increase charging speeds by up to 10 times what you’d expect from a normal household outlet, enabling recharges to 95% in as little as one hour.
Scalable Quick Chargers
For home or office use, the scalable “Quick Charger” system can more than double charging speeds (dramatically reducing charging times) for any Zero FX, FXS, S, or DS. The system uses stand-alone (off-board) 1kW chargers that work in conjunction with the motorcycle’s standard (on-board) charger.
Note: each charger typically needs to be plugged into a separate circuit.
2020 Zero SR Totalmotorcycle.com Features and Benefits
Z-FORCE® MOTOR
Instant Torque. Impressive Power. Incredible Efficiency.
The Z-Force® motor was developed from the ground up by Zero Motorcycles to be optimized for efficiency, power and size. The Z-Force® motor features an interior permanent magnet (IPM) design that significantly improves performance during hard riding and allows higher sustained top speeds. Even more impressive, the compact brushless motor requires no liquid or forced-air cooling and requires no routine maintenance.
When combined with a Z-Force® Power Pack, the remarkably compact and light motor delivers amazing horsepower and breathtaking acceleration. Providing a unique ride quality, the motor produces 100% torque from a standstill for instantaneous throttle response and incredible off-the-line performance.
While sophisticated, the Z-Force® motor is designed to make the ownership experience simple and exhilarating. All extra parts, maintenance concerns and weight have been eliminated to help riders focus on the best part of owning a motorcycle – the ride.
POWER TANK
Install Any Time. Go Farther.
The Z-Force® Power Tank adds an additional 3.6 kWh of battery storage capacity to any 2014 or later Zero SR/F, Zero S, Zero SR, Zero DS or Zero DSR model*. An optional accessory, the Power Tank can be added at any time-during or after motorcycle purchase. For example, if you purchase a Zero SR ZF14.4, you could upgrade your motorcycle to 18 kWh of battery capacity if additional range is needed. With that much energy, you can travel up to 223 miles in the city or 112 miles on the highway.
The Power Tank is a dealer-installed accessory which comes complete with a Z-Force® Power Pack module and all necessary hardware. On Zero S, SR, DS and DSR, the Power Tank completely replaces the tank bodywork and tank storage area. The Zero SR/F retains a small lockable storage area with the Power Tank installed.
*Please note that the Power Tank is not compatible with motorcycles equipped with the Charge Tank or with the an additional 6 kW Rapid Charge module installed. Power Tank will be available for Zero SR/F in fall of 2019.
Z-Force® Power Pack
More Energy. Less Space.
Z-Force® Power Pack technology has been revolutionizing the electric motorcycle industry since 2007 when the first Zeros started rolling out of the Santa Cruz factory. The goal: pack more energy into less space. Using state-of-the-art lithium-ion cell chemistry and advanced battery management systems, each motorcycle is able to travel farther, faster, and last longer. A typical Zero S or Zero DS can travel over 200,000 miles with the batteries retaining 80% of their original maximum capacity. To meet the demands of Zero’s most advanced platform, the Zero SR/F Power Pack features an aluminum heat-sink housing and thermal transfer interface which ensures consistent cell cooling and maximum long-term powertrain performance no matter how hard you ride.
An industry first, a Zero will automatically put itself into Long Term Storage Mode after prolonged periods of inactivity to optimize the battery’s state of charge and further improve long term battery health. In addition to longevity, the Z-Force® battery technology requires no active cooling or routine maintenance. The result is a complete electric motorcycle line that offers an exhilarating ride while saving on gas and virtually eliminating all routine powertrain maintenance.
Swap in. Swap out.
Zero Motorcycles is the first electric motorcycle manufacturer to feature available hot-swappable modules. This optional system allows the Zero FX and Zero FXS to be ridden using either one or two Z-Force® modules. A module can be added or removed in less than a minute. Charging can be done via the motorcycle’s standard on-board charger or by using optional off-board charging accessories.
Fully Recyclable
Zero Motorcycles uses the best practices in the EV industry to make sure all of our lithium-ion Power Packs are recycled. Each one uses a chemistry that allows us to take advantage of continuously improving battery-recycling programs
Zero Power Packs are fully air cooled and designed to handle a diverse range of conditions. Our latest generation of Z-Force® Power Pack technology uses new and more precise cell monitoring to ensure greater range, more power and better acceleration off the line.
ENVIRONMENT
Clean. And getting Cleaner Every Year.
Zero Motorcycles’ 100% electric powertrain significantly reduces CO2 and noxious fumes emissions while also saving oil reserves. Regardless of any one personal or political reason, conserving oil and reducing tail pipe emissions offer a wide range of benefits. In fact, because the electrical grid is becoming increasingly efficient year after year, a Zero will become more energy efficient and cleaner with age. And for those who truly aspire to absolute energy independence or eliminating emissions, it is even possible to power a Zero using completely renewable energy sources. Regardless of where the energy comes from, there’s something very freeing about passing the gas station as the prices continue to hit new highs.
Two Zero motorcycles off road at dusk
“Americans spend in excess of 100 hours commuting to work each year. For the nation as one, the average daily commute to work lasted about 24.3 minutes in 2003. A motorcycle or a scooter does not offer a lot of passenger room or storage space, but most get far better mileage than even a hybrid car and at a far cheaper price. Moreover, two wheelers have the added advantage of maneuverability to beat the rush hour traffic. With fuel prices skyrocketing, motorcycles and scooters can be a practical fuel-economy transportation option for the typical half hour drive to work.” – AMERICAN COMMUNITY SURVEY (ACS) DATA RELEASED BY THE U.S. CENSUS BUREAU MARCH 2005
Fewer Emissions
More than 50 studies and analyses conclude: fewer emissions from plug-in vehicles
Plug-ins would provide carbon emissions reductions in 49 U.S. states, including some that are heavily dependent on coal
For a car – about a 70% reduction in emissions
For a motorcycle – over 90% reduction in emissions
Cleaner Running Every Year
As the electrical grid gets cleaner – plug-ins get even cleaner
Plug-in cars move emissions away from population centers.
Output from a few thousand power plants is easier to control than 200 million vehicle tailpipes.
223 MILES.
Farther than it seems.
Less expensive than you expect.
One of the first questions that everyone asks about electric motorcycles is, unsurprisingly, “how far?” Zero Motorcycles offers an entire model line, and each model and variation has a different range. At present, the longest range in the lineup goes to the Zero SR ZF14.4 + Power Tank with 223 miles in the city. However, there are a number of options with lesser ranges that offer different benefits for those who only want a motorcycle for getting around town or the city. After all, selecting an electric motorcycle is all about making the best choice for your lifestyle.
To select the motorcycle that best meets your needs, we recommend you see how far you typically ride in a day. Depending on how closely you watch your mileage, the answer may surprise you. According to the US Department of Transportation, the average ‘driver’ travels about 13,476 miles per year. That breaks down to roughly 37 miles on average per day. Once you own a Zero, 37 miles will cost you a whopping 37¢ per day. Did we mention that there’s also no routine powertrain maintenance?
The Four Factors
Maximize your Range
Range varies in electric motorcycles similarly to how it varies in gas motorcycles. However, the big difference between electric and gas is that energy consumption is averaged over a shorter distance on an electric motorcycle. Electric motorcycles are designed for convenient daily recharges versus less frequent and less convenient trips to the gas station. As a result, the same electric motorcycle often yields different ranges from one full recharge to the next.
How to Predict the Range
To generally predict how an electric motorcycle’s range will be affected, you can use the four factors:
By considering each of these factors, you can use specifications such as city, highway or combined ranges as standards to estimate what the motorcycle’s practical range will be under your particular usage case.
