2022 KTM 250 SX Totalmotorcycle.com Key Features

THE BATTLE FOR GLORY
The 2022 KTM Motocross range is the most complete and most technologically advanced line-up of Motocross and Supercross motorcycles that brings KTM’s production bikes closer than ever to the championship-winning machines of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing stars.

To prove the point, we took FIM MX World Champions Jeffrey Herlings and Tom Vialle to an MXGP track and let them throw some fast laps on the production 2022 KTM 250 SX and KTM 125 SX models.

4-STROKE – LEGACY COMES AS STANDARD
The championship-winning KTM SX-F range has been a dominant force in the FIM Motocross World Championship, AMA Supercross series, and the AMA Pro National Motocross Championship for years. Tapping into the recent success of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing stars, KTM engineers had clear objectives while designing the updated 2022 SX range; to create the lightest, best-handling, most powerful, and most technically-advanced Motocross models ever to roll their wheels out of the factory in Mattighofen, Austria.

2-STROKE – DISTINCT POISE AND POWER
Instantaneous throttle response and the best power-to-weight ratio in the Motocross segment has been the calling card for 2-Stroke fans for years. For 2022, KTM once again offers three distinct full-sized 2-Stroke offerings. Not to mention, KTM’s almost unrivaled success on the international stage, with seven of the 12 top spots in the 2020 EMX125 European Championship belonging to the KTM 125 SX.

Young racers deserve the very best when it comes to fast tracking their careers. For that reason, the KTM Sportminicycle range is treated with the same ground-up priority for development as the full-sized SX range. By treating the KTM 85 SX, KTM 65 SX and KTM 50 SX with the same development impetus as the larger machines, the 2022 KTM Sportminicycles range has retained its position as the class leader in junior motocross.

E-MINI – RACE UNPLUGGED
The 2022 KTM SX-E 5 is an all-electric mini racer designed to offer the most inexperienced of beginners a real, READY TO RACE experience, but at the same time, being a real-world option for competitive mini-racers. Zero emissions, low noise, easy operation and minimal maintenance make the KTM SX-E 5 a true future vision in the sport of motocross.

In its updated 2022 trim, the KTM 150 SX can battle with the potent 250 4-Strokes, while the KTM 250 SX is a 2-Stroke powerhouse with the same light feeling.

All full-size 2022 KTM SX models introduce a frame finishing coated in racing orange to further reinforce the proximity to the championship winning machines of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing stars. The updated frame aligns perfectly with the new blue seat cover and the fresh colors in the graphics to emphasize visually the close link to KTM’s Factory machinery.

Complementing KTM’s 2022 SX range is a series of Sportminicycles that share the exact same race-driven development approach as KTM’s full-size Motocross bikes. Junior riders that climb on any of the KTM 50 SX, KTM 65 SX and KTM 85 SX models can do so knowing that they are experiencing class-leading performance, state-of-the-art WP suspension, high-end brakes and minimal weight. For tech-savvy riders, the wheels can start rolling with the 2022 KTM SX-E 5, the latest incarnation of a high-end electric mini-crosser that can grow together with the young rider on it.

Joachim Sauer – KTM Product Manager Offroad: “The new SX range is all about the proximity to our race machinery, and the bikes that are doing the business on racetracks around the continents. We’ve been refining these packages for several years and we feel the connection, both aesthetically but also in terms of performance, is now closer than ever. To prove our point, we gave production bikes to MXGP and MX2 World Champions and I’m glad to confirm they were surprised and impressed with their performance. It was fitting to give the 2022 models an even ‘racier’ look with the blue and orange design and to remind riders and fans that there isn’t a more READY TO RACE motocross range in any paddock anywhere.”

2022 KTM 250 SX Totalmotorcycle.com Features and Benefits

Engine & Exhaust

Exhaust

When it comes to power delivery and performance, the exhaust plays a key role and packs a punch that is hard to beat. In addition, its narrow shape provides slimmer ergonomics while still operating safely within the noise limits for racing.

Engine

The engine of the KTM 250 SX features the latest 2-stroke technology, with a counter-balance shaft for low engine vibration, as well as a reliable hydraulically operated DDS clutch. It has a twin-valve controlled power valve, which contributes massively to making the KTM 250 SX engine the most competitive 2-stroke in its class. Powering through its 5-speed transmission truly is an exhilarating experience.

Cylinder

The cylinder on the KTM 250 SX has a bore of 66.4 mm and is fitted with a Twin-Valve powervalve system. The exhaust port is machined for precise power valve function, providing excellent overall power delivery. By using the two supplied springs, the power characteristics can be changed quickly and easily, ensuring optimal settings for different tracks and rider preference. The lateral cylinder head brackets are made of aluminum and reduce vibration to levels of near insignificance.

Crankcases and engine covers

The compact engine cases are manufactured using a high pressure die-cast production process that helps with weight reduction, while retaining strength and durability. The design allows for optimal shaft arrangements closer to the center of gravity, resulting in perfect mass centralization and easier rideability. The engine covers feature a smart surface structure that reduces wear caused by the rider’s boots, keeping them looking as fresh as the day you bought it.

Transmission

The engine has a strong 5-speed gearbox built to suit any kind of motocross track. The gear ratios were developed specifically to match the power delivery of the 250 cc engine. The gearbox also features a “no-dirt” gear shifter. Similar to the foot peg design, it prevents the build-up of dirt and ensures the next gear is always available, no matter what the conditions.

Balancer shaft

No more numb hands and feet. This engine design allows for the addition of a lateral balancer shaft, which helps keep engine vibrations to a minimum. This means you can keep charging harder for longer.

Clutch

The KTM 250 SX is fitted with the extremely durable, KTM-developed DDS clutch (damped diaphragm steel), with a wear-free steel basket and heat resistant clutch plates. It uses a diaphragm spring instead of the usual coil springs, which results in considerably easier clutch action. The diaphragm spring is also compact enough to allow for a damping system to be integrated into the clutch hub, contributing to better traction and durability. Additionally, the BREMBO hydraulic system provides easy and precise clutch modulation.

Carburetor

The KTM 250 SX is fitted with a MIKUNI TMX carburetor. The settings on the 38 mm flat slide carburetor perfectly suit the airbox and exhaust design, providing smooth, controllable power all the way through the rev range.

Ignition

All 2-stroke models feature a CDI control unit with advanced hardware that improves the starting behavior of the engine. The ignition curves remain unchanged.

Crankshaft

At the heart of the engine, the crankshaft delivers a 72 mm stroke that produces optimal torque and revs. It is ideally balanced and with the added aid of a counter balancer shaft, minimum vibration is guaranteed. The crankshaft is situated in the perfect position to centralize mass, contributing to better agility and handling.

Cooling

Maintaining the optimal engine temperature is crucial to ensuring consistent horsepower throughout the ride. The KTM 250 SX features radiators which are positioned for a lower center of gravity. Their design matches the shrouds perfectly and offers a great slim feel to the ergonomics. By using CFD technology (computational fluid dynamics) together with a clever coolant circuit routing, the innovative system ensures the optimum engine temperature for the highest performance, no matter what the conditions. The radiators also feature special protectors that serve not only as protection from flying rocks and debris but also as a brace that disperses energy around the radiators in the event of an impact.

Chassis

Airbox

The airbox on the KTM 250 SX ensures optimal flow dynamics, and together with its intake snorkels, leads to maximum power and quick throttle response. Despite the obvious performance advantages, the design also offers maximum protection against soiling of the air filter. The large Twin-Air air filter is mounted on a cleverly designed stiff cage that minimizes incorrect installation. As found on previous models, filter maintenance is quick and easy and does not require tools – a standard, original feature from KTM.

Frame

The frame is professionally crafted from hydroformed chromium molybdenum steel tubes that are robot welded, ensuring the highest levels of consistent quality. The stiffness has been precisely tailored for the most dynamic handling, and works in perfect harmony with the suspension to provide nimble agility without losing high-speed stability. The frame also features “no dirt” footpegs, which have a simple but effective self-cleaning system that ensures the footpegs return to their original position, providing complete control in all conditions. All SX frames feature the same highly durable powder coating as the KTM Factory machines and come with standard frame protectors. The subframe is made from lightweight aluminum, providing rear fender stability and strong support for the rider at little extra weight.

Swingarm

The one-piece swingarm is manufactured using a gravity die-cast production process for exceptional strength at the lowest possible weight. It offers a wide range of adjustment for the rear wheel, allowing for a shorter wheelbase on tighter, twisty tracks, or a longer wheelbase for greater stability on longer, more choppy tracks. The swingarm’s chain measurement markings are visible from above, making adjustment simpler and more accurate.

Wheels

KTM uses lightweight, CNC-machined hubs and high-end Excel rims on all SX models, guaranteeing maximum stability and minimum weight. The aluminum spoke nipples feature a design that conveniently reduces the frequency with which the spokes need to be tightened. The wheels are fitted with the latest DUNLOP GEOMAX MX 3S tires, delivering maximum grip and stability, effectively transferring all the power to the ground.

Front suspension

All full-size KTM SX models are fitted with the super-lightweight WP XACT front fork with AER technology. It is a 48 mm USD air-sprung fork with separate functions in each fork leg, with damping functions on the right side and the air spring on the left. The left leg features a two-chamber system with a capsuled air cartridge, helping prevent loss of air pressure. Essentially, this means that in the rare case of a leaking outer seal, the internal cartridge pressure keeps the bike in a normal position. The air spring is exceptionally easy to use and can be adjusted to any rider weight via a single air valve and the air pump that is supplied with the bike. The right fork leg integrates a damping cartridge to fit single damping leg requirements and can be adjusted to the track conditions and the rider’s preferences. Additionally, the fork top caps have a new design for improved, easy adjustment(compression from top, rebound from bottom, 30 clicks each).

Rear suspension

All KTM SX models feature a WP XACT monoshock, which has been developed to work as a complete unit with the entire frame and swingarm architecture, as well as the linkage system and the WP XACT fork. It features high-quality machined and anodized components, which add a touch of class and give it appeal beyond just a functional necessity. It is fully adjustable, including high and low speed compression, allowing you to set the shock up precisely to suit any track and rider’s preferences.

Triple clamp

All KTM SX models feature top quality, CNC-machined triple clamps which have become a KTM trademark. The triple clamp has a precisely calculated stiffness and offset (22 mm offset for all models) to match the flex characteristics of the frame and fork. The result is a front end that works in perfect harmony, contributing positively to the overall handling and stability. The rubber damped handlebar fixation reduces vibration and also allows for some adjustment with two different mounting positions. An hour meter is fitted as standard on the upper triple clamp on all SX models, keeping the rider informed of the number of hours spent tearing up the track and when the next service is due.

Brakes

High-tech BREMBO brakes have always been standard equipment on all KTM motocross bikes. Combined with lightweight wave discs, the renowned system provides the highest level of braking efficiency, enabling you to out-brake the competition.

Fuel tank

All models in the KTM SX range are fitted with lightweight polyethylene fuel tanks. The shape of the fuel tank allows for slim ergonomics without compromise to the 1.98 gallon fuel capacity. The filler cap has an inside thread that makes for easy and reliable closure.

Ergonomics & Comfort

Footpegs

Sophisticated ´no-dirt´ footpegs prevent clogging of the footpeg pivot, even when digging in deep ruts. Looking for a higher riding position? Then just mount the footpegs of the 2019 EXC models, which are 6 mm higher than the SX versions.

Seat

All KTM SX models feature a seat that perfectly matches the range’s dynamic performance-oriented ergonomics. The seat cover features silicone strips that provide better feel and grip for the rider. The seat is conveniently fixed to the bike using one long, lateral screw, making it secure and easy to handle.

Handlebar

All full-size KTM SX models are equipped with the same high-strength aluminum tapered handlebar, made by NEKEN. The handlebar is fixed in rubber damped mountings, which allow for two different positions. The handlebars come standard with an ODI vulcanized grip on the right side and a comfortable ODI lock-on grip, which does not require any wire or glue, on the left. They also feature a bar-pad with a cover that can be attached and removed with little effort.

Bodywork & Graphics

Decals

The modern design and graphics ensure that it is not only about function, but an impressively fast and aggressive look that sends a clear message to the competitors.
