Introducing the 2023 Honda Montesa Cota 4RT301RR…

Designed, developed and produced in Barcelona, Spain—the unofficial capital of trials, and the home of Montesa’s factory—the Cota models are elite machines that are capable of tackling the most impossible sections imaginable. That’s why Montesa (a subsidiary of Honda) is the choice of perennial FIM World Trials Champion Toni Bou, who was heavily involved in the development of the 4RT301RR and 4RT260R. Together, this pair of models addresses the needs of any trials rider.

In the world of trials riding, the Montesa Cota is the undisputed king—just ask Toni Bou, 16-time (and counting!) World Champion, every one of those titles on a Montesa. Combining Montesa’s legendary expertise with a 298cc Honda engine, it’s no wonder the Cota 4RT 301RR is so dominant. This year you can choose from two versions—you can get a 4RT 301RR Race Replica too: in addition to special graphics, you get an optional carbon-fiber clutch cover and exhaust protector so you can lighten and fine-tune your bike to your riding preference. Both models get a retuned rear suspension this year, as well as a solid rear sprocket and an included optional lighting package. While you’re at it, you should also check out our Montesa Cota 4RT 260R, a perfect choice for the casual trials rider.

Honda Confirms Returning miniMOTO, Scooter and Trials Models

April 18, 2023 — ALPHARETTA, Georgia

  • Trail125 receives engine updates for 2023 model year
Also returning: Ruckus, Metropolitan and Montesa Cota
  • In an announcement today, American Honda confirmed the return of a number of two-wheel products for model-years 2023 and 2024. A diverse range of categories is represented, highlighting Honda’s commitment to producing high-quality machines for casual riders, nostalgia-driven customers and niche-focused enthusiasts.

Honda’s retro-inspired Trail125 receives updates to its engine package and a new color for 2023. The efficiency-focused advancements align the popular model with its miniMOTO relatives, especially the Super Cub. Returning for the 2024 model year, the iconic Ruckus and classic Metropolitan scooters continue to provide approachable and practical urban transportation. On the trials front, the two Montesa Cota 4RT models are back for 2023, following another incredible season of FIM World Trials competition in which Repsol Honda’s Toni Bou captured his record 32nd world title (16 indoor, 16 outdoor).

“Each of these models has a rich history and a loyal following, so we’re pleased to continue offering them for our customers,” said Brandon Wilson, American Honda Manager of Sports & Experiential. “From the affordable and user-friendly Trail125, Ruckus and Metropolitan to the highly specialized Montesa Cota 4RT models, Honda takes great pride in serving all types of two-wheel enthusiasts, regardless of how they choose to pursue their particular adventure.”

2023 Honda Montesa Cota 4RT301RR Totalmotorcycle.com Features and Benefits

PERFORMANCE

PGM-FI ENGINE
The Honda Montesa Cota 4RT 301RR and 301RR Race Replica feature fuel-injected power that’s easy to modulate, for the surgical power delivery so critical to trials riding. Specifically tuned for low-rpm response, the 298cc four-stroke engine is extraordinarily flexible, with plenty of power and torque all the way through the rev range. A high-pressure fuel pump helps give the engine a strong power curve.

KICKSTART LEVER
Both the Cota 4RT 301RR and the Race Replica feature a long kickstart lever, helping ensure easy one-kick starts no matter where you are on the course.

THREE-RING PISTON
The 4RT 301RR Race Replica features a three-ring piston for better sealing and improved durability. The piston is light and designed with a flat top, reducing vibration and making combustion more efficient at low rpm.

ENGINEERING

PREMIUM SUSPENSION
Both Montesa 301RR models feature a Showa® fork and a Showa  rear shock designed to improve handling, and overall feel.

BRAKES AND WHEELS
The Montesa Cota 4RT 301RR and 301RR Race Replica are equipped with a 4-piston monoblock front-brake caliper and 32-spoke wheels. The rear wheel features an innovative system incorporating central-adjustment spokes for a significant weight reduction, and which also allows the Cota to fit a tubeless rear tire. The Cota 4RT 301RR Race Replica comes with premium Michelin X11 tires, laser-engraved hubs, and light DID aluminum rims.

TECHNOLOGY

DUAL-MAP ECU
Does your course feature sections with poor traction, followed by sections with better grip? No problem—the 4RT 301RR and 301RR Race Replica feature a handlebar-mounted mode switch that lets you choose between two maps/modes to change engine power delivery. And the bike even includes special ECU mapping that improves engine response in the low and middle rpm ranges.

ADVANCED ENGINEERING
The Cotas’ Honda engine uses a battery-less digital ignition systems, and include a bank-angle sensor to switch off the ignition when the motorcycle is lying on the ground. The Cota 4RT 301RR and 301RR Race Replica also incorporate a magnetic kill switch.

HANDLING

CHASSIS
Both the Cota 4RT 301RR and the 301RR Race Replica use an aluminum chassis with a gorgeous finish, showcasing the classic lines and the impeccable manufacturing quality. The Cota 4RT 301RR Race Replica also features supple settings for the Showa® fork, similar to those used by factory riders. The muffler uses reinforced mounts, and the rear-brake pedal is short to avoid impacts and allow the rider more freedom of movement.

Top-flight protection
Carbon fiber protectors (for clutch manifold) are available as part of the Optional parts kit (for competition use only). Also, the brake and clutch lever brackets mount with just a single bolt, making adjustment easy; the front brake lever can also be adjusted without using tools.

Sure footed support
The lightweight triangular-section forged aluminium side stand is hardened for strength. It mounts close to the engine and tucks neatly underneath the swingarm, well out of harm’s way.

Front and rear Showa suspension
Ground clearance is set at 310mm and the high-quality 39mm diameter SHOWA front fork features 158mm stroke. Also, the rear SHOWA shock, with a new setting, operates through Pro-Link. Both front and rear suspensions are adjustable for spring preload and compression damping.

Strong four-stroke engine
The Montesa Cota 301RR fuel-injected, four-valve 298cc four-stroke engine features a flat-topped, three-ring piston to boost low-rpm torque and efficiency. Engine braking is reduced thanks to the breather design and ignition map.

Racing ready
The Montesa Cota 301RR incorporates a solid rear sprocket, thus complying with FIM race regulations, our most demanding race customers can take the new 301RR from the shop to the races.

World championship motorcycle
The Cota 301RR is the result of 32 World Championship titles in the top category. It is a bike developed at the races for the most demanding trial customers. Now, with its lightweight aluminum muffler design is ready to take on the races.

Develop your racecraft
If you demand performance and exclusivity, the Cota 4RT 301RR is built for you. Its 298cc engine delivers a smooth wall of power and torque with the sort of precise control that hunts out every shred of rear wheel grip. And its chassis — with a specification that includes a 39mm SHOWA front fork, rear SHOWA shock and twin-spar aluminum frame — is ready for any test.

Ready for anything
A competitive trials machine is the motorcycle reduced to pure purpose. There is no excess, just performance and results. The Cota 301RR, with its 298cc engine displacement, engine breather and ignition map, is the product of Montesa’s single-minded pursuit of perfection, decades of experience and world titles. It’s something special.
