2023 KTM 890 SMT Totalmotorcycle.com Features and Benefits

The only way is up. The racing skills of former AMA Superbike and Supermoto ace Chris Fillmore were an apt conduit to display the potential and the limits of the reimagined KTM 890 SMT. The American, and Pikes Peak winner, throttled the Supermoto-tourer along a Sardinian Mountain climb to show petrol heads and the motorcycle industry what they had been missing – and what they had been waiting for.

Fillmore gassed the super-torquey 889cc LC8c parallel twin and counted on 105 hp at 8,000 rpm. The engine is the same platform behind the enviable stats and output of the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R model and variations: with a 20% increase in rotating mass over the KTM 790 platform, providing stability and reassurance through corners, the knock control and 46 mm dual Dell’Orto throttle bodies guaranteeing optimum momentum while the fuel consumption from the 15.8 liter tank is fantastically low at 4.6 liters/100 km. The KTM 890 SMT is just as happy pushed through low revs as pinned in higher gears, in fact Fillmore used the full range of the KTM 790 DUKE’s motor to ace his second Pikes Peak hill climb record in Colorado.

The tank itself plays a forceful role in the ergonomics and has been slimmed and designed specifically for the KTM 890 SMT. The form of the tank slides the rider even further ‘into’ the bike with a wide and comfy contact patch but still compact enough for free and flowing movement (aided by the single piece Supermoto shaped seat at 860 mm height). The aero-optimized smoked windshield is placed just above the double fender concept with a low splash guard on the fork legs. Cruise or attack?

Chassis-wise the KTM 890 SMT has a CroMo steel frame with a tighter geometry that apes the KTM ADVENTUREs. The structure is typically light and superbly agile on the move but also ensures fierce stability the faster a rider pushes. The shock absorber is angled further to reduce the seat height and accommodate the longer swingarm, contributing to a forwardly inclined rider position as well as straight stability.

Feeling the KTM 890 SMT on the go is a prime experience: agile, flighty and responsive. The WP APEX suspension (43 mm open cartridge upside-down forks at 180 mm of travel and same for the shock) is fully adjustable and complements the 17” wheels. The Michelin PowerGP tires supply more than enough stick for the slickest tarmac and have been especially selected for their specs and appropriateness for the KTM 890 SMT’s demands. The state of the art 5” TFT dashboard is made from optically bonded mineral glass and is scratch and glare resistant and fully customizable while divulging the easy-to-use infographic menu system for setup preferences.

The bike can be molded even further. The three standard ride modes (RAIN, STREET, SPORT) can be expanded by an optional TRACK setting that permits the rider to toggle different amounts of throttle modes and traction control through 10 levels. Cornering Motorcycle Traction Control (MTC) is an important safety feature sensitive to the bikes’ pitch and behavior at lean. Try six different handlebar positions with a 30 mm range. The whole show can slide and be wrenched to a halt with potent brakes, with four piston calipers spinning a 320 mm front disc and 260 mm double piston calipers on the rear. Putting this stopping power into action employs Cornering ABS and Supermoto ABS; placing both technically advanced provisions into the mix for an excellent safety profile.

More add-ons include heated grips and the chance to add Motor Slip Regulation (MSR, ideal for better control in low grip situations and for fast downshifts) to the software package. QUICKSHIFTER+ and Cruise Control are optional and ready to go with a simple activation process. Good connectivity with the bike means full access to navigation possibilities, and the advantages of the KTMconnect App include (roadside assistance, owner manuals, digital service booklet for service and maintenance).

It would be very ‘backmarker-ish’ not to mention the looks. The KTM 890 SMT says a lot with its Supermoto tourer style, from the wheels to the sporty graphics. The SMT cuts a sharp profile and will be impossible to miss and harder to outgun on the road. As ever, don’t forget the encompassing collection of KTM PowerParts (accessories and TRACK and TECH Packs) and KTM PowerWear to look the part on the hill, the highway or any hike to KTM 890 SMT happiness.

KEEPING YOU MOVING

Rider aids

KTM rider aids are developed to enhance riding experience by providing more control in different riding scenarios. ABS, MTC, and specially engineered RIDE MODES allow you to get the most out of your machine when barreling down the motorway, or when attacking twisty mountain roads.

UNMATCHED TRACTION

MTC (Motorcycle Traction Control)

Making use of the latest generation of KTM MTC, traction is improved by using an advanced 6D Inertial Measurement Unit. This not only regulates and controls any slip at the rear wheel but also prevents uncontrolled lifting of the front wheel. With these two forces combined, the motorcycle is guaranteed the best possible acceleration. With all the data collected from the various sensors, the system detects and controls power wheelies and ensures stability as well as smooth wheel landing and acceleration.

FULL CONFIDENCE IN THE CORNERS

Cornering ABS

Grab a handful of brakes with total confidence thanks to a new 9.3 MP ABS unit. This allows riders to use full braking power mid-corner with the 6D-sensor doing all the hard work. The 6D-sensor works by continuously monitoring and evaluating the current dynamic state of the motorcycle, enhancing safety and stability during braking. Also, this level of ABS technology is unmatched, providing precise and efficient stopping power with the highest level of safety.

RIDE ALL DAY

Seat Comfort

The single-piece Supermoto-style seat on the KTM 890 SMT was developed to allow uninhibited freedom of movement while providing maximum grip and comfort when carving around mountain passes solo. Want to tour 2-up? No problem. The seat has been designed for long days in the saddle touring with a pillion, too.

LOCK AND SLIDE

Supermoto ABS

So, it makes sense then that any KTM motorcycle bearing the SMT name has a need to deliberately execute slides. SUPERMOTO ABS allows the rider to lock the rear wheel as and when required – a prerequisite for committed Supermoto riding. The ABS function remains active on the front wheel while activated, too.

GETTING A GRIP

Wheels and Tires

Michelin PowerGP tires are wrapped around a set of 17″ lightweight, light-alloy wheels. This means low levels of unsprung mass, and epic levels of handling and ride dynamics.

GRAB A HANDFUL

Brakes

Slowing the apex hunting KTM 890 SMT down comes courtesy of twin 320 mm brake disks and JJuan 4-piston radially mounted calipers. These are used in conjunction with a J.JUAN axial master cylinder, making for impressive braking control and stopping power. At the rear, a 260 mm brake disk is actuated by a double-piston floating caliper, also supplied by J.JUAN.

SPORT TOURING TUNED

Reworked Suspension

The 2023 KTM 890 SMT allows you to set up your ride to your own preferences. Fitted with rebound and compression damping adjusters on the top cap of the fork legs, this makes for quick and easy adjustment for different types of riding usage. Want to attack the mountain pass, then simply dial in the clickers, or if you out for a brisk but steady ride then soften up the setup. On the rear, the shock features a rebound damping adjuster and a hand adjuster for spring preload. The rebound damping adjustability allows the rider to adapt the shock behavior to different riding situations, while the spring preload adjuster can be tailored for luggage, passenger loads or for those full mountain attacks.

STYLE

Bodywork

Not to be mistaken for anything else on the mountain. The KTM 890 SMT has a double fender design, composed of a high front fender – that takes inspiration from the KTM 450 SMR – and a lower splash guard which is connected to the fork leg protectors. This, along with spoilers and rear side panels that are slightly wider than the seat for improved control and to reduce wear and tear on the seat, and in-mold graphics for further durability, make the KTM 890 SMT ready for anything.

BEAT THE WIND

Aerodynamics

A newly designed and aerodynamically optimized short wind deflector has been developed to provide just the right level of wind protection, while still maintaining that signature sporty KTM look.

COMMAND CONTROL

Upgraded TFT Display

A new state-of-the-art full 5″ TFT display keeps you informed with everything you need to know about the machine below you. Featuring improved functionality, each function is illustrated by an infographic of the motorcycle to directly show the user the relevant field of adjustment. An optically bonded mineral glass display ensures optimum scratch and glare resistance. Additionally, an optional Connectivity Unit allows the connection between the KTMconnect app and the TFT via Bluetooth for Turn-by-Turn+ navigation, music, incoming calls, and quick access to KTM roadside assistance.

FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT

Ergonomics

With tank spoilers and rear side panels slightly wider than the seat, hitting the mountain pass is easier thanks to improved rider movement. This also helps with reduced wear and tear on the seat, while the slim shape of the fuel tank is optimized for precise handling and control when tearing around tight switchbacks on the hillclimb.

TECH FEST

Technology

The 2023 KTM 890 SMT brings unmatched technology to the trail. Boasting an arsenal of rider aids, ride modes, ABS and traction control features – as well as optional smartphone connectivity – it rules the mid-weight Sports Tourer segment. The riding experience can be further enhanced with optional additions like Quickshifter+ and Cruise Control, with the introduction of a Demo Mode, which allows you to test all the KTM technology for the first 1,500km.

ENGINEERED TO RIDE

Frame

The overall geometry of the KTM 890 SMT was developed for sharp handling, and comfort when attacking the mountain passes- with unchallenged hillclimb capability. Strength was a big consideration in the design, so a tubular Chromoly steel frame is used with the engine acting as a stressed member to reduce weight and overall size. Additionally, the compact frame allows for a long swingarm which improves traction without compromise handling.

FULLY LOADED

Subframe

Featuring a lightweight and solid construction, the subframe is fully loaded for street attack. The motorcycle beneath you needs to be built to last. The steel trellis subframe was developed to be compact, lightweight, and strong enough to carry a full load of luggage as well as a passenger on those long hunting session to find the ultimate mountain roads.

ROCK SOLID

Stability

The 2023 KTM 890 SMT is rock solid at any speed, thanks to a high-end steering damper. Engineered to provide unflappable composure at all times, the steering damper works to keep the front end stable when flicking through tight turns or hauling over mountain passes.

FUELED FOR FUN

Fuel Tank

In true Supermoto fashion, the fuel tank is purposefully designed to be sleek for optimal rider movement. With an overall fuel capacity of 15,8 liters, more than 300 km of twisty roads await you.
