Can Öncü and Albert Arenas secured further podium finishes for the Yamaha R9 in Race 1 of Round 5 of the FIM Supersport World Championship at Autodrom Most in the Czech Republic, finishing second and third respectively on Saturday afternoon.
After shattering the lap record on Friday, Öncü (Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing) seized the lead on the opening lap with a move on Lucas Mahias (GMT94), who had claimed the holeshot from second on the grid. Mahias’ GMT94 team-mate, Roberto Garcia, also made a strong launch to settle into third in the early stages.
Championship leader Albert Arenas (AS BLU CRU Yamaha Racing) did not enjoy as strong a start as his fellow R9 riders but quickly began to make progress. On lap five, the Spaniard executed a bold move at Turn 1 to surge from third into the lead. However, he was unable to hold the position for long, as a charging Valentin Debise took over at the front shortly after the halfway mark.
Garcia’s retirement ended his hopes of a podium challenge, but both Arenas and Öncü remained firmly in contention for victory. Öncü moved into second place and stayed with race leader Debise, but the Frenchman’s blistering pace on the final lap proved too much, leaving the Turkish rider to settle for second – his fourth consecutive podium finish.
Arenas claimed his seventh podium in nine races with third place, extending his championship advantage to a commanding 36 points.
Despite his strong start, Mahias gradually dropped out of podium contention and eventually crossed the line in fifth, while Filippo Farioli (VFT Racing Yamaha) secured his strongest result of the season in eighth.
Aldi Satya Mahendra (AS BLU CRU Yamaha Racing) held eighth position in the early stages before crashing out of contention. Although he rejoined, the Indonesian rider lost significant time and ultimately finished 31st.
For Race 2, Mahias will lead Yamaha’s charge from the front row after setting the third-fastest lap of the race. He will be joined by an all-R9 second row featuring Arenas, Öncü and Garcia. Race 2 gets underway at 14:00 local time.
