Today, the Government of Canada announced that U.S.-origin motorcycles with engine capacities exceeding 800 cc will be subject to a 50% counter-tariff effective September 8, 2026.
Moto Canada recognizes and supports the Government of Canada’s responsibility to defend Canadian economic interests and respond to ongoing trade challenges. At the same time, Moto Canada is concerned that applying a 50% tariff to motorcycles may have unintended consequences for Canadian businesses, employees, and consumers in the industry.
Moto Canada represents the manufacturers and distributors responsible for many motorcycles, ATVs, and side-by-sides sold in Canada. The industry supports a nationwide network of approximately 900 dealerships and more than 88,000 jobs in communities across the country.
While intended to address broader trade concerns, the tariff could place additional pressure on Canadian dealerships and distributors, many of which are small and medium-sized Canadian businesses. These companies support local jobs, contribute to regional economies, and serve riders in communities from coast to coast.

The Government of Canada should consider removing US-origin motorcycles from the counter-tariff list before the measure takes effect on September 8.
Should the tariff proceed, Moto Canada encourages the federal government to establish a clear, timely, and practical remission process for affected businesses, including consideration for motorcycles that have already been ordered, purchased, or are currently in transit.
Moto Canada looks forward to working constructively with government officials and stakeholders to better understand the implations of this measure and identify solutions that support both Canada’s economic interests and the long-term health of the powersports industry.
