2015 Triumph Speedmaster Review

2015 Triumph Speedmaster on www.Totalmotorcycle.com

To the onlooker, Triumph Cruiser bikes could be mistaken for being just about pure classic cruiser style…

But one ride tells you that they are about surprising levels of agility and performance in a bike that can deliver an engaging ride every day. They just happen to do it with that pure classic cruiser style.

Long, low, blacked out and mean, the Speedmaster echoes the hot-rod cruiser theme but adds a very British spin with some classic Triumph parallel twin power.

Built to be an engaging entry level bike that’s also ideal for riders moving to their first big bike the Speedmaster has the zest and handling to keep experienced riders happy too.

Everything about it is laid back and easy. The low rider look is a classic one reflecting the style of homebuilt hot-rods on both sides of the Atlantic.

But the soul of any bike is its engine. And that’s where the Speedmaster stands out even more, with an air-cooled twin that is steeped in our long and colourful heritage.

All this means you have a highly capable motorcycle that has a great feel and delivers satisfying performance every single day.

That’s what makes it such good value for money.

Engine
Performance

The output peaks at a muscular 61PS and there’s strong torque from low in the rev range, with a maximum of 53lb.ft at just 3300rpm. To you that means plenty of thrust at a flick of the wrist without needing to resort to the slick gear change.
Parallel Twin

The Speedmaster’s parallel twin is such a refreshing change with its roots in the very engines that brought us to the forefront of motorcycling during the 1950s and 1960s – the golden era of British twins.

Still very much a classic-looking Triumph engine, we have built it using modern Triumph technology, cleverly hiding it behind that traditional exterior.

We’ve also retained the air cooling to give you a bike that looks right but, although it seems to have twin carburettors, the Speedmaster is fuelled by a modern electronic fuel injection system for high efficiency, plenty of smooth and accessible power and exceptional fuel consumption.
Configuration

The engine feels great thanks to the 270 degree crankshaft design which results in a lazy, uneven beat from the mellow exhaust note to match the easy pull of the motor. We’ve made sure that vibration levels are just enough to let you know there’s an engine working hard beneath you but without intruding on your general ride or comfort.

And, inside the old-style cylinders we’ve added double overhead camshafts, eight valves and a fully integrated crankshaft, clutch and gearbox. All with a comprehensive engine management system to handle the ignition as well as fuel injection.
Fuel Efficiency

The Speedmaster is laid-back and easy on the fuel too. It can manage 71.1mpg at a steady 56mph and even at 75mph you’ll be sipping fuel at 55.5mpg.

Chassis
Frame

Holding everything together and keeping it in line is our traditional-style tubular steel cradle frame with steel swingarm, using the engine as an essential component to give you exceptional rigidity for stable, sure-footed handling.
Suspension

The suspension doesn’t suffer for the sake of the Speedmaster’s style.

We fitted high quality KYB forks and shocks with a generous 120mm travel at the front and 96mm travel at the rear, enough to cope with poor conditioned back-roads as well as maintained highways.

The shocks are preload adjustable too, so you can find the perfect balance and stance whether you’re travelling light or fully loaded with a passenger and the accessory luggage.
Handling

Forming the backbone of the Speedmaster’s long, low style and at the same time providing it with exceptionally easy, well-balanced handling. We’ve made a chassis for the most inexperienced riders can manage and seasoned ones can enjoy.

We raked the forks out at an extreme 33.8 degrees in true hot-rod style and kept the trail figure long at 170.4mm. We stretched the wheelbase out too at a lengthy 1606mm but because we’ve kept the centre of gravity low and very carefully matched the geometry, the Speedmaster still steers with that easy, engaging feel that makes even tight, low speed corners a breeze. And stability at higher speeds of course is exceptionally good.
Brakes

We put a single 310mm disc at the front backed up by the 285mm rear disc to help maintain the bike’s lean look, but together they still provide plenty of power with good feedback to make sure the Speedmaster stops as well as it goes.
Riding Position

As a Speedmaster rider you adopt a relaxed position, feet well forward and hands wide apart on the pulled back bars. Sitting just 690mm from the ground the Speedmaster is very easy to manage even at walking pace. And it’s comfortable when the pace increases, so you can take in the scenery and just enjoy the ride.

It’s laid-back style suits a wide range of riders and is a great choice for anyone that finds other bikes too much of a stretch to the ground.

2015 Triumph Speedmaster www.Totalmotorcycle.com Features and Benefits

Engine
Performance

In a different state of tune to the Rocket III Roadster for even more useable torque, lower down the rev range, for a better touring ride. 106PS at 6000rpm and a torque of 203Nm to be precise.

A ride like no other bike, with smooth and powerful yet unintimidating acceleration with any load and on any incline. You’ll find the Speedmaster is a gentle giant with its 2.3 litre, three cylinder engine that is powerful and flexible enough to reward your riding style.
Configuration

The classic looks of the Speedmaster are backed up by plenty of modern technology. Massive cylinders and crankcases hide double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and the latest materials and engine design ideas. Fuelling is taken care of by state-of-the-art electronic fuel injection with twin butterflies per cylinder for smooth, predictable throttle control.
Fuel Efficiency

Even the fuel economy figures of the Speedmaster look impressive. 51.9mpg at 56mph and 41.9mpg at 75mph means you get well over 150 miles out of a single tank.
Shaft Drive

One of the main reasons that the engine cylinders are aligned along the length of the bike is so that they can better link up with the Speedmaster’s final shaft drive. This means you get a bike that’s lighter and capable of handling such huge levels of torque.

Chassis
Frame

We’ve achieved exceptional strength and stiffness from a steel twin spine frame that includes the engine as an integral component. It’s what makes the Speedmaster such an agile and engaging big bike to ride.
Suspension

Designed for long distance comfort. Chromed twin rear shocks and funky forks with chromed shrouds aren’t there just to look pretty, they contain sophisticated damping components that give you outstanding wheel control in low urban speeds or enthusiastic cornering.

The rear preload is five-way adjustable and ready for any load you need to carry.
Brakes

We had to give a bike with such big personality and performance a pair of four-piston calipers up front on large diameter 320mm discs. And a big 316mm disc at the rear so that you have exceptional control as well as feel and feedback.
Wheels and Tyres

We fitted small diameter 16 inch wheels and a restrained 180 section rear tyre to the Speedmaster. Adding to your agility and fluidity.
Seat Height

We wanted a wide range of riders to be able to manage the Speedmaster easily, even in low speed manoeuvring, but still allowed plenty of room for taller riders. So we set the seat height at a low 730mm for many comfortable hours in the saddle.
Comfort

We made the Speedmaster with an 18 inch wide saddle with a three-layer construction and taped seams for a ride that’s comfortable all day long.
Riding Position

We’ve created a spacious riding position that is relaxed and laid-back with large footboards and the controls sited forward and bars pulled back and high up. The classic touring position with Triumph rider focussed comfort thrown in.
Handling

The expertise of our chassis engineers is here to see in the Speedmaster. They have achieved an agility and fluidity that totally belies its size and weight. So that even low speed turns and hairpins are not just easy to handle, but a pleasure to ride.

Equipment and Technology
ABS

The advanced ABS brakes on the Speedmaster are fitted as standard. This is a massive bike that comes with huge amounts of control.
Immobiliser

As a premium flagship motorcycle we equipped the Speedmaster with an immobiliser as standard.
Instruments and Computer

The comprehensive dash can be scrolled through from the right handlebar, giving you all the key information at your fingertips including fuel gauge, range to empty, dual trip and clock.
Touring Screen

A touring screen you can detach quickly without tools.
Footboards

The Speedmaster comes equipped with spring loaded, chrome plated footboards for a bit of extra style and comfort.
Q R Screen and Back Rests

To improve on the already high levels of comfort, we added back rests as standard and a bar mounted screen that can be detached without tools for all day, long distance riding.
Luggage

With an engine like this we didn’t have to hold back on luggage space. So we gave the Speedmaster extra generous, lockable, detachable, water resistant panniers knowing that, however much you need to carry, your 2.3 litre triple will hardly notice.
