Ducati DesertX Rally: adventure without limits

Race Wilder
Whether you’re looking for off-road adventure or the competition of a rally-raid, the DesertX Rally is here to help you conquer the toughest challenges and push yourself beyond every limit.

Unleash your dreams
Born in the desert and raised off-road, the DesertX Rally is ready to accompany you on your most extreme adventures with its its top-notch professional off-roading equipment.

From the DesertX, the first Ducati equipped with a 21-inch front rim and 18-inch rear, now comes the new DesertX Rally model. Characterised by the best race-bred components: the DesertX Rally adopts high-quality solutions that are both specialised and effective in off-road use and sophisticated as with every Ducati.

Developed and tested also on racetracks, the DesertX Rally prototype was the protagonist of the Iron Road Prolog at the Erzbergrodeo 2023 with Antoine Meo (multiple Enduro World Champion and European Supercross Champion) who took it to the top step of the podium in the twin-cylinder category.

Like every Ducati, DesertX Rally has a unique and distinctive style. Thanks to the new livery and solutions typical of the off-road world that characterize its appearance, the DesertX Rally communicates its character from the very first glance. However, it is the technical equipment that the Rally becomes an even more capable off-road motorcycle.

The high front mudguard, the Kayaba suspension with increased travel with closed cartridge fork and big piston shock absorber are derived from the world of motocross and allow the rider to overcome any obstacle, while the new spoked wheels with sizes and characteristics specific to off-road racing make the Rally an unstoppable motorcycle on any type of terrain. These solutions together with a light, impact resistant forged carbon sump guard, gear pedal and rear brake lever machined from solid, unequivocally identify the Rally as a motorcycle designed to tackle the most extreme adventures.

2024 Ducati DesertX Rally Totalmotorcycle.com Features and Benefits

Exploration with supreme performance
The DesertX Rally is a high-performance machine, designed to cross desert, rock, and forest and satisfy your desire to conquer.
Professional off-road suspension

The bike offers an additional 20mm of suspension travel, for a total of 250mm at the front and 240mm at the rear. Both the 48mm closed cartridge front fork and 46mm rear shock are produced in collaboration with KYB. The DesertX Rally flaunts a technology used on MX and enduro bikes that guarantees homogeneous behavior and the necessary support even during the most extreme use.

Lighter, more technical wheels

The DesertX Rally is more efficient off-road thanks to wheels that are lighter and more technical, with carbon steel spokes machined from solid hubs and high-resistance Takasago Excel rims.

The front wheel retains its 21”x2.15” size, while the rear is narrower than that of the DesertX, measuring 18”x4”.

Lighter components

The DesertX Rally is more efficient off-road thanks to its dedicated wheels, carbon sump guard, and billet aluminum rear brake and gear level. It weighs about the same as the DesertX (just 2 pounds more), but the sensation is completely different.

Off-roading soul

The DesertX Rally is even more efficient off road equipped with the state-of-the-art off-road componentry. The front brake line is split, to allow for the mounting of the high mudguard. The Öhlins steering damper is adjustable and attached directly to the handlebar.

The gear lever and rear brake pedal are in billet aluminum. The sump guard is in forged carbon, more resistant than the standard version on the DesertX and lighter than the version currently available as a Ducati Performance accessory for the DesertX.

Mass-colored plastics

The plastics are mass-colored and unpainted, so any scratches are less visible. The graphics are adhesive, in thick PVC, to better protect the surfaces of the bike and ensure greater scope for customization.

The colors and graphics of the new livery take up those of the DesertX with which Antoine Meo triumphed in the Erzbergrodeo Prologue.

Chassis

The DesertX Rally’s suspension is designed to tackle even the most difficult obstacles, improving the DesertX’s already high off-road capability. Both the fork and the shock absorber contain the same technologies used on professional Motocross and enduro bikes.
At the front end, the DesertX Rally is equipped with new billet aluminum triple clamp, rigid and light. The fork is a closed-cartridge KYB, a technology used on motocross and enduro racing bikes.

This solution involves pressurizing the oil inside the cartridges to avoid fluid cavitation to deliver consistent behaviour of the front suspension performance during the most extreme of uses.

Furthermore, to reduce friction and increase resistance to wear, the fork tubes are equipped with Kashima Coating and the sliders with DLC surface treatment. Wheel travel increases by 0. inches (20 mm), for a total travel of 9.8 inches (250 mm).

The rear is fitted with an aluminum swingarm with a different attachment point compared to the standard DesertX, with a fully adjustable large piston shock absorber to improve the bike’s behaviour in the most demanding off-road use. Rear wheel travel also increases by 0.8 inches (20 mm), for a total of 9.4 inches (240 mm). Finally, to improve handling on the most demanding off-road terrain, the DesertX Rally is fitted with an adjustable Öhlins steering damper, fixed directly to the handlebars with supports machined from solid.

The new enhanced suspension has allowed the DesertX Rally to increase the ground clearance, which is now 11 inches (280 mm) 1.1 inches (30 mm) more than the standard, enabling it to overcome even the most difficult terrain.

To further improve off-road performance, the DesertX Rally is equipped with wheels in specific dimension for off-road, being more robust and lighter thanks to hubs machined from solid, carbon steel central spokes and high-strength Takasago Excel rims with inner tube.

Finally, to underline the versatility of the DesertX Rally, as with the DesertX, is homologated with three style of tyres, with Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR as original equipment. To enhance its off-road capabilities, it is possible to mount Scorpion Rally, while for those who prefer to ride the bike on asphalt, Scorpion Trail II is available.

Thanks to the use of high-level components, the DesertX Rally has a dry weight of just one kilogram more than the standard model despite the increase in length and size of the suspension.

Engine and Electronics

The DesertX Rally is equipped with the 937cc Ducati Testastretta 11° twin-cylinder with desmodromic distribution. Maximum power is 110 hp at 9,250 rpm and maximum torque of 68 lb-ft (92 Nm) at 6,500 rpm. This engine, characterized by linear and manageable power delivery, has been optimized for off-road use with dedicated gear ratios and specific strategies and calibrations of the electronic system.

The six Riding Modes of the DesertX Rally (Sport, Touring, Urban, Wet, Enduro, Rally) have Cornering ABS, Ducati Traction Control (DTC) and Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) recalibrated according to the new chassis and for more challenging off-road use.

The electronic functions of the DesertX Rally are managed through the vertically oriented, high-resolution 5″ colour TFT display positioned to offer optimal visibility even when riding standing. This display is designed for integration with the Ducati Multimedia System which allows you to connect your smartphone, thus activating new functions such as music control, call management and Turn by Turn navigation* (optional) with road directions directly on the dashboard. Furthermore, the DesertX Rally offers the Utility Bar as standard for mounting the satnav.

Service intervals for the DesertX Rally are every 9,000 miles (15,000 km) or 24 months, with valve clearance checks every 18,000 miles (30,000 km).

Accessories and Apparel

The DesertX Rally has all the essential components for off-road use as standard, but those wishing to customize it further can do so by choosing from the Ducati Performance accessories catalogue. To extend fuel range, it is possible to mount an additional 2.1 US gallon (8-litre) tank which provides 40% more total fuel capacity, fit perfectly into the natural lines of the motorbike. Aluminum side cases are available which, combined with the top case, give the motorbike a total load capacity of almost 120 litres. For travellers who never stop there are also additional LED spotlights and heated grips.

The steel tube engine guards protect the tank and engine from falls or impacts during off-road use. Finally, enthusiasts who wish to make the image of their bike even more racing fosussed can choose the Termignoni homologated exhaust. Anyone wishing to use the DesertX Rally in competition can improve the power and torque values by +7% by means of a racing exhaust, again by Termignoni.

Enthusiasts who want to complete their look will be able to choose from various specialist apparel proposals with graphics coordinated with the DesertX Rally livery. The collection, which also includes the women’s line, is made up of the Explorer jacket-trousers set, Atacama gloves, Explorer T7 boots and Arai Tour-X5 helmet.

Design

Born in 2021, the DesertX is a modern interpretation of the great enduros of the 80s, created by the Centro Stile Ducati inspired by criteria of essentiality and robustness. All the aesthetic elements typical of the protagonists of the great African Rallies are present, revisited in a contemporary key. The double headlight is integrated into the windshield, onto which the double sectored full LED DRL is projected, the most characteristic style element of the DesertX. The rally image is strengthened by the possibility of adding an additional fuel tank, with a capacity of 8 litres, in the tail.

However, the DesertX Rally is designed for those aiming for more extreme adventures. The motorbike communicates its character at the very first glance, thanks to an evocative livery inspired by that of Antoine Meo’s motorbike at the Erzbergrodeo, completed by the red paint of the seat support frame, and by technical solutions typical of the off-road world that characterize its unmistakable appearance.

The high front mudguard, which allows the rider to tackle even the muddiest surfaces, is one of the most distinctive features of the DesertX Rally. Likewise, the forged carbon sump guard, which combines lightness and resistance, is a detail that identifies a motorcycle designed to tackle challenging off-road terrain.

Again to offer greater resistance to impacts and scratches typical of off-road use, the plastics of the DesertX Rally are not painted but mass-coloured, and the graphics are created using high-thickness PVC adhesives. This also makes it easier to customize the bike.

Another detail that contributes to embellishing the DesertX Rally is the dedicated seat. More suitable for off-road use thanks to ergonomics similar to the Rally seat available in the Ducati Performance catalogue, the one mounted on the DesertX Rally has a special textured coating to improve grip. Furthermore, the brake and gear pedals are machined from solid, with an articulated pedal, again to adapt even more to specialist off-road use.

Engine

The DesertX Rally’s engine is the popular 937 cc Ducati Testastretta 11° twin-cylinder with desmodromic distribution.

In this Euro 5* configuration the engine delivers a maximum power output of 110 hp at 9,250 rpm and a maximum torque of 92 Nm at 6,500 rpm.

This engine is characterized by an excellent level of reliability and the ability to combine Ducati performance withregular and always manageable power delivery, placing a motorcycle capable of tackling any route in the rider’s hands.

To offer the best possible performance in off-road riding and in different types of use, the Testastretta 11° has been specifically optimized for the DesertX models. In fact, the gearbox has dedicated ratios different from those of the Multistrada V2. The ratio has been shortened overall on all gears up to fifth to ensure the best off-road behaviour.

First and second gear, in particular, are much shorter than the other models (respectively by 14.3% and 8.7% vs the Multistrada V2), to facilitate the low-speed riding phases of some difficult passages typical of off-road use. At the other extreme, the sixth gear is adequately long to facilitate motorway use of the motorbike while maintaining low rotation speeds, which allow fuel consumption to be limited and the comfort level to be increased.

The gearbox works in combination with DQS Up&Down (Ducati Quick Shifter) with a strategy developed specifically for the DesertX, active both in upshifting and downshifting.

Service intervals for the DesertX Rally are every 15,000 km or 24 months, with valve clearance checks every 30,000 km. DesertX Rally is also accessible to new riders. In fact, a 35 KW version will also be available for A2 license holders.

Chassis

DesertX Rally confirms the steel trellis frame of the DesertX, robust and light, capable of withstanding even the highest stresses typical of off-road competitions, and effective in all riding conditions while maintaining ease and the ability to inspire confidence and safety on any type of route.

Suspension

The DesertX Rally’s suspension is designed to tackle even the most challenging obstacles in off-road riding, improving the DesertX’s already strong off-road ability: both the fork and the shock absorber are characterized by the same technologies used on professional cross and enduro bikes.

At the front end, the new billet aluminium plates are characterized by a reduced offset which, combined with an increased value on the fork bottom, leads to a 1 mm increase in the overall offset of the front end to match the different front suspension technology.

The fork is in fact a closed cartridge KYB, a technical solution employed on competition motocross and enduro bikes.

This solution pressurizes the oil inside the cartridge to avoid cavitation. The fork offers 48 mm inverted DLC treated sliders, adjustable in compression and extension, and fork tubes with Kashima Coating treatment to improve smoothness. Wheel travel increases by 20 mm, for a total of 250 mm.

The stiffness of the springs drops from 6 to 5 N/mm, given the greater intrinsic support of the closed cartridge fork.

At the rear there is a new aluminium swingarm, on which a shock absorber with a piston increased to 46 mm hinges to improve the passage of oil and therefore the bike’s behaviour in more extreme off-road use, fully adjustable in preload (with remote control), compression at high and low speeds and in rebound. The spring stiffness increases compared to the DesertX, going from 90 to 96 N/mm. Rear wheel travel increases by 20mm, for a total of 240mm.

All these variations, combined with a new fixing plate for the side stand, whose fulcrum has been moved upwards, take the ground clearance to 280 mm. The seat height increases to 910 mm. The steering damper is an adjustable Öhlins, fixed directly to the handlebars.

Tyres and Rims

The DesertX Rally confirms the measurements of 21″x2.15″ at the front and 18” at the rear, although with a narrower channel (4″ instead of the 4.5″ of the DesertX) for the wheels: typical measurements of bikes intended for off-road.

To better adapt to the most demanding off-road use, the Rally features more robust and lighter components, with hubs machined from solid, carbon steel spokes and high-resistance Excel channels for the inner tube, the latter to facilitate repairs in the most extreme off-road use.

The adoption of lighter wheels, combined with steering plates and gear shift and rear brake pedals machined from solid, compensate for the increase in weight brought about by the greater suspension travel, ensuring that the DesertX Rally contains the increase to just one kilogram compared to the DesertX.

The original equipment tyres are Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR in the sizes: 90/90-21 M/C 54V M+S TL and 150/70 R 18 M/C 70V M+S TL, the most balanced choice for all-round use of the motorbike. DesertX will also be approved both for mounting more off-road oriented tyres (90/90 – 21 M/C 54R M+S TL and 150/70 – 18 M/C 70R M+S TL), and for more road tyres. (90/90 – 21 M/C 54V TL and 150/70 R 18 M/C 70V TL).

Brakes

The DesertX Rally is equipped with Brembo brakes with Cornering ABS function. The front system is characterized by the presence of Brembo M50 monobloc radial calipers with four 30 mm diameter pistons, axial master cylinder with adjustable levers, double 320 mm front disc with aluminium flange and split brake line. At the rear we find a single 265 mm diameter disc on which a double-piston floating caliper, also from Brembo, works.

The braking power setting has been designed to offer the right power for road use, but also good modulation when riding off-road and on difficult surfaces. Furthermore, the Cornering ABS functionality has been recalibrated to adapt to the greater travel, and therefore to the different load transfers during braking.

Electronics

The electronics of the DesertX Rally maintain the functions developed on the DesertX, adapted in the calibrations of the various systems affected by the changes made to the chassis.

There are six Riding Modes available on DesertX Rally and they work in combination with the four Power Modes which modify the power and response speed of the Testastretta. Each Riding Mode takes advantage of the presence of the Bosch IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) to act on the intervention levels of the various controls, modifying the character of the bike depending on the choices and attitude of the rider.

On the DesertX there is the EBC (Engine Brake Control) function, adjustable on three levels which allows a different modulation of the engine braking depending on the riding style and use of the vehicle. The DTC (Ducati Traction Control) is adjustable on eight levels, while the DWC (Ducati Wheelie Control) is adjustable on four levels.

Furthermore, on all six Riding Modes of the DesertX Rally (Sport, Touring, Urban, Wet, Enduro, Rally) Cornering ABS, Ducati Traction Control (DTC) and Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) have been recalibrated to match the intervention on the changes made to the chassis.

Cornering ABS can be set to three levels to adapt to each situation and the rider’s experience level. In particular: Level 3: safe and stable with Cornering functionality dedicated to road use Level 2: off-road, active at the front and with partial locking permitted at the rear, Level 1: off-road, active only on the front

The ABS can also be completely deactivated directly through the control block with a dedicated button, but only in the Enduro and Rally Riding Modes.

Riding Modes

Sport Riding Mode

Sport Riding Mode is the one that performs absolutely the best on asphalt. With this Riding Mode the engine is set to the maximum possible performance and delivers all the bike’s 110 hp, offering the most direct throttle response available.

Touring Riding Mode

For the Touring Riding Mode the maximum power of the Testastretta drops to 95 hp and the engine delivery becomes softer and more personal. Active safety is enhanced by the increased intervention level of DTC and DWC.

Urban Riding Mode

Engine power in Urban Riding Mode is reduced to 75 hp and the throttle response is soft, as for Touring. DTC and DWC move to a very high intervention level.

Wet Riding Mode

Wet Riding Mode is designed for wet asphalt situations. In this mode the level of intervention of the electronic controls is set to the maximum to guarantee greater safety and stability even in unexpected situations.

Enduro Riding Mode

The Enduro Riding Mode is designed to be effective in every off-road situation, even for those riders less experienced in off-road riding. The Medium Power Mode limits the maximum engine power to 75 hp, but the throttle response is rapid, to always have the right reactivity necessary to overcome obstacles that may be encountered off the road. In this Riding Mode the ABS can also be completely deactivated using the specific button.

Rally Riding Mode

This is the most high-performance Riding Mode dedicated to off-road riding, the one that allows expert riders to make the most of all the potential that DesertX Rally is able to express off the road. The engine delivers 110 horsepower and the throttle response is particularly reactive to allow you to overcome obstacles with the classic “twist of the throttle”. DWC is deactivated and DTC is set to a very low level, allowing controlled rear wheel slip.

ABS is set by default to level 1, but can be deactivated using the specific button

Power Modes

The Ducati DesertX Rally has four Power Modes, i.e. four different engine maps that allow you to shape the character of the Testastretta 11° according to your needs and riding abilities.

• The “Full” Power mode offers the maximum power of 110 hp and a lively and reactive throttle response. This Power Mode is combined with the “Sport” and “Rally” Riding Modes
• The “High” Power Mode offers the power of 95 hp with a softer throttle response. This PM is combined with the Touring and Wet Riding Modes
• The “Medium” Power Mode limits power to 75 hp while offering a dynamic throttle response, this PM is combined with the Enduro Riding Mode
• The “Low” Power Mode limits power to 75 hp and also offers a particularly smooth throttle response, it is combined with the Urban Riding Mode

Dashboard

The DesertX Rally is equipped with a high-resolution 5″ colour TFT display oriented vertically and positioned to offer the best possible visibility even when riding standing. This display is designed for integration with the Ducati Multimedia System which allows you to connect your smartphone, thus activating new functions such as music control, call management and Turn by Turn navigation * (optional) with road directions directly on the dashboard.

The display offers the possibility to choose between two Info Modes: Standard and Rally. In Standard Info Mode, all the information necessary for road riding is displayed: the rev counter and speedometer are clearly visible, as are the gear engaged, the fuel level and other information necessary for the journey.

The tripmaster function is present in the Rally Info Mode. This simulates the operation of the tripmaster, used in rallies for navigation and allows you to manually adjust the odometer indication, using the buttons on the control block.

*The Ducati Multimedia System and the Turn-by-Turn navigation system are accessories. The availability of these systems may vary depending on country, smartphone model and operating system

Headlights and indicators

The technological equipment of the DesertX Rally is also of a high level as regards the full-LED lighting system.

The double front headlight has two bi-function polyelliptical modules with Daytime Running Light (DRL) and has been designed to guarantee excellent visibility, particularly important for a motorcycle capable of travelling in all conditions. The rear light is equipped with the Ducati Brake Light, a system which, in the event of sudden braking, automatically activates the flashing of the rear light to signal the sudden slowdown to the following vehicles, making a further contribution to the rider’s safety.
