HISTORY
First introduced for the 2005 model year, the CRF450X continued Honda’s proud pedigree of large-displacement off-road machines, including legendary models like the XR600R and the XR650R. Derived from the CRF450R motocross platform, the original “X” was engineered specifically for off-road use. Updates for 2008 included the addition of a Honda Progressive Steering Damper, as well as the switch to a smaller fuel tank. A complete overhaul took place for 2019, including the adoption of fuel injection, updated bodywork and a new chassis.

Completely redesigned CRF450 Performance Models Headline Honda’s 2027 Off-Road Announcement
In an extensive new-model announcement today, Honda unveiled a sweeping overhaul of its 2027 CRF450 Performance models, highlighted by the most comprehensive update to the CRF450R in a decade. Developed with direct input from HRC’s factory racing programs, Honda’s new flagship motocrosser combines a lighter, more powerful engine with comprehensive chassis and suspension revisions for a more capable, more confidence-inspiring race machine that gives riders a clear competitive edge.
The announcement spans the brand’s complete dirt bike portfolio. The same improvements to the CRF450R extend to its HRC WORKS EDITION and RX siblings, while the CRF250R, CRF250R HRC WORKS EDITION and CRF250RX receive targeted updates. Also returning are the trail-and-tarmac CRF450RL and the Baja-dominating CRF450X. Meanwhile, the CRF Trail family continues to spread the love of off-road adventure far and wide.
“Off-road riding is in Honda’s DNA, and our fully revamped 2027 450 CRF Performance models—developed alongside HRC’s factory racing programs—reflect everything we’ve learned at the highest levels of competition,” said Colin Miller, Manager of Experiential Marketing at American Honda. “That philosophy extends across Honda’s broader off-road lineup, from our three updated CRF250 models to the dual-sport CRF450RL, the rugged CRF450X, and the CRF Trail family that introduces new riders to the sport. Whether you’re chasing championships, exploring the backcountry on the weekend, or getting your young riders started on two wheels, there’s a CRF that’s just right for you.”

DESIGN / STYLING
The CRF450X’s aggressive styling reflects its off-road focus, drawing inspiration from its CRF450R motocross counterpart while incorporating rugged, trail-ready details. The red, white and blue color scheme highlights Honda’s racing heritage, while off-road-focused functional elements focus it on the off-road application.
For example, the lightweight 2.0-gallon fuel tank features an integrated cut-off valve to minimize spillage in tip-over situations. Fork guards fend off damage from rocks and bushes, and lightweight plastic handguards shield against trailside brush and shrubs. The aluminum side stand simplifies trailside breaks but folds out of the way when not in use. An LED headlight and taillight support night riding, while a lightweight lithium-ion battery provides increased capacity for quick and reliable starting. An easily accessible electronic-component box on the left side of the frame is convenient for maintenance. The digital meter features a clear, compact design with legible black characters on a white LCD background, ensuring readability in varying conditions.
Other details include long-lasting in-mold graphics resist peeling or fading, and a gray-metallic Renthal® handlebar with a crossbar pad.
ENGINE / DRIVETRAIN
The CRF450X’s 450cc Unicam engine has bore and stroke measurements of 96.0mm and 62.1mm, respectively, and finger-follower rocker arms on the intake valves contribute to the compact layout. Tuned for off-road-appropriate power characteristics, the engine features a DLC surface treatment on the rocker arms, minimizing friction. Dedicated valve timing ensures smooth power delivery, particularly in technical riding conditions, while the engine’s high crank inertia maximizes control in challenging terrain. With a 12.0:1 compression ratio and a three-ring piston design, the power plant is built for durability and reliability.
To handle everything from tight, technical trails to high-speed fire roads, the model features a wide-ratio, six-speed transmission that is produced from high-strength materials for resilience in demanding conditions. A special clutch design enables a light lever pull, while a primary-damper mechanism with friction springs helps suppress engine-torque fluctuations, for smooth running. Large-capacity radiators offer superior heat-exchange efficiency, keeping the engine cool in demanding off-road scenarios. The ECU features off-road-specific mapping, and the specially designed exhaust system has an optimized pipe length and diameter, for excellent responsiveness at low rpm. An off-road-ready, emissions-compliant muffler with a USFS-approved spark arrestor makes the CRF450X 50-state off-road legal.
CHASSIS / SUSPENSION
The lightweight aluminum twin-spar frame delivers a balance of nimble handling and high-speed stability across varied off-road terrain. The 49mm inverted Showa fork has 12.0 inches of wheel travel and is specifically tuned for challenging trails. The Pro-Link® rear-suspension system has a single Showa shock absorber and delivers 11.8 inches of wheel travel.
Front-brake duties are handled by a two-piston caliper and a 260mm petal-style rotor, while a single-piston rear caliper works a 240mm petal-style rotor. Both deliver strong stopping power at high speeds while maintaining the precise feel needed for technical terrain.
An endless sealed chain is designed for durability in harsh conditions, while a damped front sprocket helps reduce noise and smooth power delivery. Dunlop MX52 tires provide versatile performance across varied terrain, and the 18-inch rear wheel allows for a taller sidewall to enhance traction in technical conditions.
