From the spectacular U.S. Car On The Beach parade to the Custom Bike Show awards ceremony, IBW Sunday brought four days of motorcycles, engines, music and entertainment to a close, with the Main Stage remaining the centre of attention right down to the last decibel
The magic of the Saturday Light Parade, with the lights of thousands of motorcycles painting the sunset over Lignano Sabbiadoro, was still in the air when Italian Bike Week got the city moving again. The Village parking area quickly filled up once more with motorcycles of every kind and style, while in the Stadio Area, American cars were warming up their engines for U.S. Car On The Beach, kicking off the spectacular parade of 200 classic cars, hot rods, customs and muscle cars, all strictly Made in the USA. Organised by specialist magazine Cruisin’ Life and the Old School Garage Club from Pordenone, the parade transformed Sunday morning in Lignano into a journey back to the golden age of the American dream.
In the afternoon, the spotlight shifted to the Main Stage for the eagerly awaited awards ceremony of the historic Custom Bike Show. After watching the bikes throughout the weekend, the jury revealed which creations by international custom builders would take home the many prizes up for grabs. The most coveted title, the Best in Show of the Italian Motorcycle Championship (IMC), went to the elegant full custom “Uwe”, built on a Harley-Davidson platform by Friulian workshop VM Cycles, with flowing lines suspended between past and present.
From the most radical special builds to interpretations of great classics, the competition embraced every side of the custom scene. The top prize in the Scrambler category went to France, with the Harley-Davidson 883 Sportster by RD Kustom from Marseille taking first place. The French builder also won the special award from the Salon du 2 Roues in Lyon with a two-stroke Yamaha YZ 250, its expansion chamber proudly on display and plenty of attitude to spare. Another Sportster, this one built by San Marino’s Emanuele Magnanelli, took the Cafe Racer category. A Yamaha full of attitude, the MT-01 by the Sardinian Giordano Loi, triumphed among the Streetfighters, proudly displaying its huge 1,700 cc twin-cylinder engine.
In the Harley Modified category, the choice fell on the Night Rod from Mantua-based workshop Custom THOM, specialists in Milwaukee power cruisers. There was a surprise in the Metric class, with first place going to the exquisite Moto Guzzi 500 by Treviso-based MC Cycles. Returning to American V-twins, Swiss workshop Cool Man Customs took the Freestyle category with its S&S-powered chopper. To win the class reserved for American “naked” Buell models, the Taurus 1125 by Rod Custom Motorcycles travelled all the way from the Czech Republic.
Finally, special recognition goes to Brescia-based Paolo Massera and his Ducati MX900, which won over both the public and the top prize in the Artigliate Custom Contest: a radical reinterpretation of the ever-popular Desmodue engine from Borgo Panigale. And while the trophies changed hands, the party continued. At Italian Bike Week, an awards ceremony is never really the end of anything. The Main Stage kept the music and decibels coming, with the young Friulian band The Snakes, the classic sound of The Sempires and the Tex-Mex rock of Trieste-based Desert Dreamers, accompanying the final kilometres of this intense and spectacular fifth edition of IBW.
