Magic Mahias Masters Assen for Pole Position on Friday

GMT94 Yamaha’s Lucas Mahias secured pole position for Race 1 of Round 3 of the 2026 FIM Supersport World Championship at the iconic TT Circuit Assen in the Netherlands with Albert Arenas (AS BLU CRU Racing) joining him on the front row of the grid in third.

It was Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing’s Can Öncü who led the way in the morning’s practice session, with eventual polesitter Mahias struggling early doors – rounding out practice 19th overall.

However, in the afternoon’s Superpole session, which saw a period under red flag after Xavi Cardelus crashed out unhurt but in dramatic style at the final chicane, the Frenchman improved his time by over a second to set pole position for Christophe Guyot’s GMT94 Yamaha team.

In just his third WorldSSP race, Albert Arenas returned to the front row of the grid lapping just 0.082 seconds off his R9 counterpart.

2025 runner-up Öncü, who held provisional pole earlier in the session, will start fifth for Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing’s home race. Roberto Garcia (GMT94 Yamaha) starts 15th, ahead of wildcard Dirk Gieger (Team Apreco) – who has been impressing first time out.

Yuki Okamoto (Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing) starts 21st and Aldi Satya Mahendra (AS BLU CRU Racing) 22nd.

Race 1 for the Supersport World Championship gets underway tomorrow at 14:00 local time.

Lucas Mahias (GMT94 Yamaha) – Pole (1’36.490)

“This afternoon I was pretty confident on the bike, we were fast straight away and I tried to push to my maximum. I lost a bit in my second exit but we managed to get the pole position. It feels like a long time since my last pole, so it’s a nice feeling. After FP1 we tried to understand the bike and make improvements, but things felt a lot better in Superpole. For the moment, I think we are fast but I do not know about race pace as this morning we struggled a bit with the tyre, and let’s see what the weather does!”
