2012 Can-Am Spyder RT Review

Purpose-built for the extended road trip

Your adventure begins here. With the 2012 Spyder RT, you get plenty of standard touring features that enchance comfort and ridability.

The standard Can-Am Spyder RT roadster is more capable of short or long getaways thanks to the bevy of upgrades it received last year, including improved suspension, enhanced ventilation and other ergonomic refinements. For 2012, the Spyder RT roadster features a new Dot-matrix display color for improved visual clarity on night excursions. All these important improvements, along with the model’s proven Rotax engine performance, innovative Y architecture and unmatched handling, make the Spyder RT roadster the answer for those looking to escape and cruise in style.

Grab a partner. A road map. And a change of clothes. Then block out your schedule for the next couple of days. The Can-Am Spyder RT delivers ultimate comfort and convenience for extended getaways. It’s the perfect touring vehicle.

When it comes to adventurous travel, the perfect way to journey down the open road is aboard the seat on the Can-Am® Spyder® RT. This highly innovative and stylish touring three-wheel roadster is made to explore. It confidentially and sophisticatedly revolutionizes travel by combining the open-air freedom of a motorcycle and the peace of mind of a luxury car. Whether it’s a solo getaway or a two-up touring vacation, the luxurious Can-Am Spyder RT lineup supplies comfort, convenience and performance levels to make the trek that much more enjoyable.

For 2012, BRP has added a new LCD display coloration on all Can-Am Spyder RT roadster packages. Aside from the base Spyder RT roadster model, all Spyder RT packages are also available in a new color schemes. Quantum Blue Metallic (standard Spyder RT Audio & Convenience and Spyder RT-S), Lava Bronze Metallic (Spyder RT Limited) are new and join Pure Magnesium Metallic, Viper Red and Pearl White as available color choices in the lineup. The Spyder RT-S roadster will wear exclusively the Dark Mist Gray colored six-spoke front wheels to add to its edgier appearance. Finally, the Spyder RT Limited package, introduced a year ago, gets a host of chrome accents and seat upgrade for an even more refinded look.

The Can-Am Spyder RT lineup separates itself from the Spyder RS roadster models with its upright body positioning, luxury-car-inspired composition and distinct outer form. This distinguishing style creates a fit-and-finish that’s unique to the industry and attention grabbing. Feature comforts include industry-leading Dynamic Power Steering (DPS™), cruise control, 41 gallons (155 L) of onboard storage, passenger-themed ergonomics, adjustable electric windshield, wind deflectors, heated grips, high-end saddle with integrated lumbar supports and much more.

All the Can-Am Spyder RT are a pleasure at cruising speeds, but their liquid-cooled 998cc Rotax V-Twin engine calibrated for touring has the necessary torque and performance. Electronic fuel injection ensures instantaneous throttle response and improved fuel efficiency. The Rotax mill puts out 80 lb.-ft. of torque at just 5,000 rpm, so it is exceptional at handling the extra weight of fully loading the cargo holds, a passenger and even a pull-behind trailer. An optional trailer from BRP, the RT-622, offers an additional 164 gallons (622 L) of storage.

A traditional 5-speed gearbox with foot shift and manual clutch (SM5) comes standard on the standard Spyder RT roadster and includes reverse. A semi-automatic, five-speed (including reverse) electronic transmission (SE5™) requires no clutching or manual shifts and is available on all the other Spyder RT roadster variations. Shifting is done via the left thumb and left forefinger. The Can-Am Spyder RT roadster is available in four packages (standard Spyder RT, Spyder RT Audio & Convenience, Spyder RT-S and Spyder RT Limited). The standard Spyder RT is basis for each model, but then each package adds another level of technology and an enhanced level of sophistication.

Add-ons include such items as a sound system with iPod compatability, AM / FM and (optional) satellite radio, push-button controls, adjustable rear air suspension, GPS navigation, LED lighting, exclusive colors and more.

Vehicle Stability System

The Y™ architecture of the Can-Am roadster allows it to host an innovative and unique stability system. Developed in partnership
with BOSCH† and inspired by automotive technologies, the system integrates ABS, traction control and stability control functions for an incredibly confident ride.

STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM
The stability control assesses your intended direction via the handlebar and determines the vehicle’s appropriate response. The system individually brakes the wheels and/or reduces excess engine torque until control is regained.

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM
Sensors monitor the rotation of all three wheels. If any of the wheels is at risk of locking, ABS reduces brake pressure on it. This intervention repeats in rapid succession and can be performed independently on each wheel, allowing for maximum braking performance.

TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM
Whenever the Traction Control System detects excessive rear wheel spin (e.g., in slippery conditions), it reduces engine torque by regulating engine ignition and fuel injection. This enables the roadster to accelerate with minimal corrective input from the rider.

DYNAMIC POWER STEERING
The electronically controlled power steering system provides the rider with a varying assist when turning the handlebars. The amount of assistance varies with the speed of the vehicle to adjust the steering input effort to a comfortable level.

Transmission Options

SEMI-AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
No clutch lever. No foot shifter. The Can-Am roadster’s semi-automatic 5-speed transmission uses convenient paddle shifting, a feature typically associated with sports cars. The paddle shift makes for faster, smoother shifting, which means you can get the adrenaline pumping as quickly as you please. Simply apply pressure with your left thumb to shift up and use your forefinger to downshift. It also features reverse for increased maneuverability.

MANUAL TRANSMISSION
Fluid motion stems from the smooth, 5-speed gearbox created specifically for the Can-Am roadster. It also features reverse for increased maneuverability.

Optimum Security

The Digitally Encoded Security System (D.E.S.S.™) helps protect the Can-Am roadster from theft or other unauthorized use. The vehicle will not start unless the rider uses the correctly coded electronic key.
