2017 Honda CRF250R Review
2017 Honda CRF250R on www.Totalmotorcycle.com
It’s Winning Time…
In 2016, the Honda CRF250R earned another AMA 250 Supercross championship, and was a popular choice for supercross riders. For 2017, the CRF250R is back with features like new-generation 49mm Showa Triple Air Chamber (SFF-Air) air fork and engine-mode selector.
The bike that Malcolm Stewart took to the 2016 AMA Supercross 250SX East Region title returns for 2017 with a 49mm track-tuned Showa SFF-Air TAC fork and Showa shock, both of which offer a wide spectrum of adjustment and are designed to work at the highest level. With a race-proven chassis and Honda’s exclusive twin-muffler design, which efficiently centers the mass, the CRF250R is renowned for its deft handling. The high-compression 249cc Unicam engine provides an impressive spread of horsepower throughout the entire rpm range, and the bike comes with an engine-mode-select button that allows for three different power maps: Standard, Smooth and Aggressive. Custom maps can also be created with the available HRC tuning tool.
Racing can be challenging, rewarding, heartbreaking, and intensely satisfying—all in the same weekend! It has a way of separating the best from the rest in a way everyone can see. It’ll make you dig deep and bring your best game to the gate—because you can be sure the other guy is doing just that. And racing is no different for a company, either. Our engineers have to work hard to bring you the best bikes in the class, and it’s all on the line when that start gate drops. And that’s exactly why you should be on a Honda CRF250R.
The CRF250R is a finely-honed racing machine, but since it’s a Honda it’s also one of the most rider-friendly bikes you can find. Just look at how many privateers roll up to the track with a Honda in the back of their truck. Our 2017 model features a powerful, compact Unicam® engine with a high-lift cam and titanium intake and exhaust valves. The unique twin-muffler exhaust keeps the bike’s weight and center of mass symmetrical, so the handling is unmatched. A Showa® air fork makes the CRF250R easy to fine-tune at the track, and the fully adjustable Showa rear suspension likewise lets you dial the bike in fast.
Wanna win? This is the bike you want to ride. The 2017 Honda CRF250R—the machine that can make it happen for you.
Powerful Unicam® Engine
The CRF250R’s unique Unicam engine is both compact and powerful. Two-fifties tread a fine line between power and peakiness—the CRF250R gets it perfect.
Next Generation Showa® SFF Fork
Lighter and easier to tune than a conventional-spring fork, the CRF250R’s Showa® SFF-TAC air fork improves suspension reaction and simplifies adjustments for track conditions. A Schrader valve for the balance chamber makes it easy to tune.
Choose Your Power
This handlebar-mounted mode-select button lets you dial in engine power delivery character with a push of your thumb. Choose between Standard, Smooth and Aggressive, depending on track conditions.
Twice As Good
The CRF250R pioneered our twin-muffler exhaust system. The two-pipe design means that each muffler is shorter, mounts lower and is tucked in much closer to the bike’s center of mass.
Racing Improves the Breed
Enhancing the CRF250R wasn’t easy. But that’s why we race – to improve
the breed. For 2016, the CRF250R’s potent engine and pinpoint chassis are
armed with track-bred updates straight from the HRC racing team.
Feel the difference.
Improved power and torque for the CRF250R 2016 provides even more performance.
At Honda, we’ve honed the CRF250R’s throttle response to a fine
point, thanks to revised PGM-FI Dual Fuel settings and a lightweight return
spring. The 249cc 4-valve Unicam engine breathes through big-bone twin exhausts,
offering added snap out of turns.
Power at Your Fingertips
Tweak the CRF250R’s engine performance to adapt to the track.
The Honda 3-way Engine Mode Select Button (EMSB) changes engine character
to suit your riding conditions – all controlled via a button on the handlebar.
Three engine maps, Standard, Smooth and Aggressive provide differentiating
fuel injection quantity and ignition timing. So now you choose how power is
2017 Honda CRF250R www.Totalmotorcycle.com Key Features
Effortless directional changes on the fly
Effortless directional changes on the fly Unique 4-valve Unicam cylinder head has very compact dimensions, allowing it to be ideally placed for excellent mass centralization. This helps make it even easier for a rider to change direction, on the ground or in the air.
Even more power
Increased cam lift, new titanium exhaust valves, new valve springs, and updates to cylinder-head porting, piston shape and connecting-rod shape, add up to an engine that’s more powerful than ever.
Programmed for power
The Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) system has new mapping to take full advantage of the upgraded engine components.
Engine Mode Select button
The CRF250R’s Engine Mode Select (EMS) system lets you modify fuel-injection and ignition mapping with the simple push of a handlebar-mounted button – perfect for dialing in the best power curve for better starts, better drive out of corners, better traction, or simply to better suit your riding style. Modes two and three can even be fine-tuned using the optional HRC setting tool. Mode selection is easily accomplished without changing the rider’s hand position or shutting down the engine (as long as the engine is idling).
Improved air and exhaust flow
The air-intake tube has been revised and the mufflers feature larger outlet diameters for improved breathing and flow, which has increased top-end power.
Larger radiators handle the output from the more powerful engine, and further enhance the CRF250R’s renowned reliability.
Excellent feel & feedback
Twin-spar aluminum chassis offers the benefit of a low centre of gravity with excellent feel and feedback. Designed to work in concert with the Showa air fork and the Honda Progressive Steering Damper, the chassis combines excellent stability with right-now turning precision.
The Honda Progressive Steering Damper allows more-aggressive chassis geometry for quicker steering, while also assisting straight-line handling. Damping action smoothly progresses as handlebar deflection increases, which produces very natural steering characteristics and feel.
Improved air fork
The inverted Showa air fork designed specifically for the CRF250R includes a number of clever innovations. By separating air-spring and damping functions between left and right fork legs respectively, overall weight balance from left to right is improved when the weight of the brake is included. The left fork with its air spring not only offers reduced weight, but its three-chambered design allows separate adjustment of ride height and “spring” rate. Together these innovations result in reduced weight, improved balance, superior suspension action and simplified adjustability.
Pro-link rear Showa suspension offers full damping adjustability and over 12 inches of smooth, well-controlled travel.
A full 260 mm in diameter, the wave-style front brake rotor offers excellent stopping power plus superior lever feel.
Dunlop MX52 tires offer excellent traction in a wide variety of conditions.
Optimized rider ergonomics with a very narrow midsection allow you to move freely on the bike and fully utilize the CRF’s incredible agility.
Easy to adjust
Quick-adjust clutch perch simplifies cable adjustment.
Reduced rider fatigue
Aluminum handlebar is rubber-mounted to reduce rider fatigue and improve comfort.
Comfort paired with control
Wide, long footpegs offer greater support for more comfort and control.
The engine stop switch with integrated LED indicator lets you know if the PGM-FI system is working properly.
The design of the fuel hose connector simplifies maintenance.
Connectivity simplifies setup
Optional HRC setting kit includes an easy-to-use programming system with precise data for setting up the machine to meet all race situations. Ignition timing and fuel mapping settings can be uploaded by connecting the motorcycle to a computer and following simple step-by-step instructions. The system radically simplifies the setup process and makes tuning accessible to a wide spectrum of riders. Connection is simple with only one connector and no need to remove the fuel tank.
