For 2017, both Cota models get some new color and graphic updates. Now both bikes also feature a longer kickstarter, so one-kick starts are the norm. And both offer twin ignition maps for varying course conditions. But no matter which Cota you choose, you’re getting one of the best pure trials bikes ever built—a marriage made in motorcycling heaven.

Race Ready.

Last season, Montesa expanded its line up with an all new trial model, the Montesa Cota 300RR, a racing orientated motorcycle created for the brand’s most demanding customers and known for its exclusiveness. This year, the Cota 300RR’s has more improvements to make it more race ready.

Next Level

To create a more desirable power curve we have made some key changes. The piston now has three rings instead of two, increasing durability, and the new ECU maps give an improved engine response. Then there’s our PGM-FI Electronic Injection System, with two switchable modes for different conditions. Mode 1 is useful in conditions of low traction, whilst mode 2 is used for maximum power. We’ve also worked to reduce engine braking by incorporating a crankcase gas decompressing system, the result is a bike with a lighter feel that is easier to control.

Take Control

Chassis and Suspension

One of the most important improvements in this area is the new TECH fork settings, which now provide better shock absorption. The compression stop of the Showa rear suspension has been improved to offer even better feel and responsiveness. The Cota 300RR continues to use the Michelin X11 tyres with light mechanised aluminium hubs & rims, resulting in outstanding traction and lightweight feel. All of these make the new Cota 300RR even more stable.

The Montesa Cota 300RR offers high quality equipment, like the advanced ignition system when the motorcycle is laying on the ground or when it is at an inclination greater than 65 degrees for more than 7 seconds. This device minimises the rider’s exposure to risk as well as protecting the engine.

More power and torque

The Cota 300RR’s liquid-cooled 4-valve Unicam engine delivers a noticeable boost in power and torque over the Cota 260RR – particularly in the midrange – thanks in part to an increase in the diameter (+2 mm) and stroke (+3 mm) of the piston that bumps displacement to 288 cc.

Engine upgrades

Enhancements to the Cota 300RR’s engine for 2017 include a new piston with a flatter head for improved combustion at low rpm and reduced vibration, plus three piston rings instead of two for better throttle response, especially in the low to mid ranges.

Improved response

A redesigned cylinder works in conjunction with the new piston to improve engine performance. ECU mapping has also been modified to further enhance response, particularly in the low to mid rpm ranges.

Choose your drive mode

Traction different from one section to the next? No problem. The Cota’s dual-mode ECU lets you choose between two ignition maps – one for low grip conditions and a second for maximum power – with the flick of a handlebar-mounted switch. Additionally, the ECU isn’t sealed, so you can modify ignition and injection maps via a laptop.

Reduced engine braking

A crankcase decompression system limits engine braking when closing the throttle for improved rider control, making the bike feel lighter and easier to handle. As well, the clutch system has been modified to handle the increased power and to better suit the demands of intense competition.

Battery-less ignition

Battery-less digital ignition includes a bank-angle sensor to switch off the ignition when the motorcycle is lying horizontal.

Classic quality

The Cota 300RR features an aluminum chassis with a gorgeous finish, showcasing classic Montesa styling and impeccable manufacturing quality. Every component was painstakingly designed to be as compact and to fit as tightly as possible, resulting in a bike that’s incredibly svelte and smooth, with a minimum of jutting surfaces to inhibit your movement.

Lightweight suspension

As part of the development emphasis on reducing weight, the Cota 300RR features an adjustable TECH fork with lightweight aluminum tubes. Revised settings for 2017 reduce bounce at the end of the stroke for improved stability. At the back, the adjustable Showa shock is calibrated to further improve stability, traction and control.

Optimum riding position

Repositioned footpegs move the rider’s weight more toward the rear of the bike, making the Cota 300RR feel even lighter and responsive and improving rider confidence in the toughest sections.

Premium tires

Michelin X11 tires offer the prefect combination of traction, light weight and response.

Race-spec wheels

New DID aluminum rims and lightweight aluminum hubs laser-engraved with the RR logo help to keep unsprung weight low, and the 32-spoke rear wheel features an innovative system incorporating central-adjustment spokes for a significant weight reduction. The system also allows the Cota to use a tubeless rear tire.

Monobloc brake caliper

Compact and lightweight front brake system uses a monobloc 4-piston caliper, 185 mm rotor and sintered metal pads. The rear brake features a 2-piston caliper, 150 mm hydraulic disc and sintered metal pads.

A real racer

Developed jointly by Honda R&D and Montesa with the goal of increasing power while also reducing weight, the Cota 300RR is an authentic racing machine that builds on the success of the Cota 4RT260RR (Race Replica) and other championship-winning Montesa trials bikes.

Light is right

A determined effort by the 300RR development team to reduce weight wherever possible has resulted in a bike that’s a full 2 kg lighter than the 4RT260.

Improved protection

Capping off a season that saw Repsol Honda trials rider Toni Bou land an incredible 20th World Championship (10 outdoor, 10 indoor), while U.S. Montesa Honda rider Marc Freixa landed the AMA/NATC MotoTrials National Championship, American Honda announces its lineup of 2017 Montesa trials motorcycles. Between the exclusive Cota 300RR and the capable Cota 4RT260, Honda Montesa has something for trials riders of every level.

Montesa Cota 300RR
Introduced last year, the Cota 300RR was made for competition (the “RR” suffix stands for “Race Ready”) and is the production model most similar to the prototypes used by factory Honda Montesa riders. For 2017, the 300RR is even better, with new ECU mapping that improves engine response in the low and middle rpm ranges that are especially important for trials motorcycles. Another aspect that contributes to engine response is the new three-ring piston (up from two), which helps prevent leakage and improves durability. The piston is now lighter and has a flatter top, reducing vibration and making combustion more efficient at low rpm. The cylinder has also been redesigned to match the new piston, further improving engine efficiency. The chassis has also been updated, with new, suppler settings for the Tech fork, similar to those used by factory riders. Finally, the muffler is more robust with reinforced mounts, and the rear-brake pedal has been shortened to avoid impacts and allow the rider more freedom of movement.

The factory-replica Montesa Cota 300RR is two pounds lighter than the 4RT260, making a great trials machine even better. Engine and suspension components offer increased performance compared to the 4RT260, and the black-and-red livery is visually stunning. Helping give the bike a factory feel are HRC carbon-fiber parts, including clutch-cover protector, exhaust-pipe protector and headlight visor, along with an anodized chassis and lightweight D.I.D aluminum rims with black-anodized machined hubs and Michelin tires.
