2002 SUZUKI DUALSPORT

Thousands of riders have either learned to ride or rediscovered the fun of off-road riding with Suzuki DualSport machines. Largely based on off-road models, these hybrid machines come with lights speedometers and turn signals so they are also street legal. They’re versatile, inexpensive to own and maintain, and most of all, pure fun thanks to their light weight, agility, and ability to go so many places. Suzuki has done more to grow this segment of the market than any other manufacturer. How? By offering a complete line of street-legal dirt bikes, packed with advanced technology and performance. Suzuki also supports the Suzuki DualSport Riders Club, which hosts events and sponsors rides all over the country, promoting the safe and responsible use of off-road trails.

UPDATED MODEL: DR-Z400S

Based on the DR-Z400 and DR-Z400E off-road machines, the Suzuki DR-Z400S DualSport model combines the best off-road performance capabilities with street-legal lighting and instrumentation for the ultimate in on/off-road performance.

Updates for 2002 include a new, aggressively styled headlight cover utilizing redesigned lightweight bracket, new rubber turn signals, all new engine guard and standard rear disc brake cover. All new suspension components similar to the DR-Z400 off-road machines are utilized, including a new front fork with fully adjustable rebound and compression damping and a new rear shock absorber with adjustable high and low speed compression damping in addition to fully adjustable preload and rebound settings.

Tuned with a broad powerband and low rpm torque in mind, the compact 398cc, liquidcooled engine comes equipped with a four valve cylinder head, 36mm CV-type carburetor, a five speed transmission, electric start with an automatic decompression system, and a lightweight nickel-silicon-phosphorus-carbide plated cylinder and a forged piston. Add to this a thermostatically controlled fan and radiator for consistent operating temperatures in any environment.

The engine is mounted in a chrome-moly steel frame, similar to Suzuki RM motocross models, and is designed for torsional strength and light weight. Oil for the dry-sump lubrication system is carried in the main backbone and front downtube of the frame, while front and rear disc brakes supply plenty of stopping power to DOT legal DualSport tires mounted on aluminum wheels.

The DR-Z400S shares the smooth, narrow profile of its off-road brothers with bodywork designed to allow the rider to move freely around the motorcycle in any situation. The left side frame cover includes quick release type fasteners for easy air filter maintenance and a street legal lighting system with 55 watt headlight. A unique compact digital instrument cluster including speedometer, odometer, dual trip meters, clock, timer and stopwatch functions complete the DualSport package of the phenomenal DR-Z400S.
