2007 Triumph Sprint ST

CLASS MOVER

The Sprint ST has come to represent the very pinnacle of sports touring refinement and it’s a bike that has never made compromises – it’s defied them. It’s a sports bike that covers distance in absolute comfort, a touring bike that carves corners effortlessly, with a truly usable mix of poise, power and all round practicality.

Since its launch in 2005 the Sprint ST has won accolades from the press and public alike. Sprint ST owners tend to be a committed and loyal bunch, and very passionate about what they expect and need from their bike. Triumph has always used this passion to good effect and many long-term Sprint ST owners were consulted in focus groups during the early design stages.

Once again they’ve played a part in the evolution of the Sprint ST and feedback from owners around the world has helped improve what was already a near perfect machine in 2007. Redesigned side panels improve thermal insulation for the rider, while the seat’s profile has been revised. It’s retained its comfort factor but is now easier to straddle at standstill.

The handlebars too, have been altered. Now higher and further back, they’ve been tailored to give a more relaxed riding position. The high screen, which was previously available as an accessory option also now comes fitted as standard.

Completely unchanged, for good reason, is the Sprint ST’s 1050cc fuel injected, three-cylinder motor. This fantastic engine, the very essence of what makes a Triumph special, has huge reserves of torque for linear effortless drive in any gear and great reserves of horsepower for when it’s needed. Peak power is an impressive 127PS (125bhp) @ 9250rpm while peak torque of 105Nm (77ft.lbf) arrives at just 7500rpm.

Enhancing the engine is a buttery six-speed gearbox and clutch fitted with an anti-backlash gear. The character of the three-cylinder layout is unfettered but the engine has a seamless polish that provides a perfect counterpoint to the lusty power delivery. The Sprint ST has an engine to revel in, explore and most of all use to the full.

The 2007 ST comes with Triumph’s second generation Keihin Engine Control Unit, with more sophisticated mapping for quicker starting, cleaner running and better fuel economy.

Matching the Sprint ST’s sublime engine is a superb chassis. An aluminium beam frame, featuring a wheelbase of 1457mm, makes for a fabulously composed yet fast-steering motorcycle with a huge scope of ability. High quality 43mm cartridge-type telescopic forks, adjustable for spring preload, are used for fine control while the rear shock is remotely adjustable for spring preload and rebound damping. A pair of powerful four-piston brake calipers mated to 320mm floating discs provide superb stopping power, a two-piston caliper and 255mm disc work on the rear wheel.

The Sprint ST’s sleek look is both functional and stunning and everywhere neat touches, like the chrome infill bars and front indicators set in the mirrors, add class. Styling cues, such as the triple front headlights and triple exit exhausts and LED rear light complement each other fluidly and the Sprint ST has a cohesive air of a machine that mixes function and form perfectly. Instrumentation includes an LCD trip computer with average MPG and speed functions, amongst others. Fuel capacity is a useful 20 litres (5.2 gal US).

Further expanding the Sprint ST’s role are the colour matched factory designed waterproof panniers that have been recently redesigned and which are fitted as standard. To further increase your carrying capacity you can add Triumph’s accessory matching top box.

An ABS option is also available. Triumph’s ABS system is carefully designed to be unobtrusive and to retain all the sensations and feel of riding, and simply adds to the rider’s control under hard braking. The system, which works independently on the front and rear brakes, operates at 100 calculations per second and so can sense the exact moment the wheel is about to lock up. It then releases the brake – over a fraction of a second – to allow the tyre to retain grip before reapplying the brake. The switch controlling this process operates at a mere four milliseconds and the system modulates the pressure between these two points to achieve optimum braking.

Two new colour options join Caspian Blue in 2007, Phantom Black and Tornado Red. All three are available for both the standard and ABS models.

The Sprint ST has proved itself a class mover – in every sense – and is now even better. It remains undoubtedly the shrewd choice of any rider looking for a versatile, all round motorcycle with a sporting edge and real sense of style.
