– 2000 Triumph Speed Triple
While the first Daytona T595 proved Triumph’s technical accomplishments, it was the related T509 Speed Triple that signalled the company’s capacity to produce bold, original designs. The lean, aggressive styling with its stripped down, streetfighter look promises a hard-edged performance which the Daytona-derived engine and chassis are perfectly capable of delivering – frame, suspension, brakes and engine are all to leading edge, supersports standards.
The 110PS (108bhp) version of the Daytona’s acclaimed, liquid-cooled, three-cylinder engine endows the bike with prodigious acceleration even from low down the rev range, while the precision handling and breathtakingly powerful brakes will satisfy even the most demanding sports rider.
Practicality, as always, has remained high on the list of priorities, so despite the uncompromised style the Speed Triple is still a capable machine when it comes to commuting or long distance touring.
But whatever you do with it, you can be sure of one thing – there will be plenty of people watching you do it.
Differences between the Speed Triple and Daytona units are:
Cylinder liners (steel instead of coated aluminium).
Pistons (to match liners).
Camshafts – revised lift and timing to boost midrange power
EFI – engine management system is digitally remapped to match the new characteristics of the engine.
NEW FEATURES FOR 2000
1. Silver coloured wheels
2. Round section, brushed finish silencer
3. Revised graphics
4. Second generation ECM unit
5. Revised gearchange mechanism
1. The new silver finish on the wheels matches that used on the frame, improving the bike’s appearance and visual integrity.
2. The new round-section silencer has a less bulky appearance, although performance is unaffected, and shows off the impressive rear wheel more effectively.
3. The 2000 graphics are designed to underline the Speed Triple’s supersports purpose by being more aggressive and dynamic.
4. The new engine management control unit (ECM) performs identical functions to the previous one but is smaller and lighter.
5. The revised gearchange mechanism provides slicker, more positive gearshifts.
