2008 Harley-Davidson FXCW Rocker

The Rocker replicates authentic hard-tail styling, but has a hidden twist. The Rockertail rear end mounts a broad expanse of rear-fender sheetmetal directly to the swing arm, just an inch over a massive 240 mm x 18-inch rear tire. When the Rocker rolls, the rear fender and wheel move together as the Rockertail glides through 3.4 inches of travel. The solo saddle is just 24.5 inches off the ground. Forward controls and independent V-Bar handlebars put the rider in a fists-forward position. Brilliant paint on the sheetmetal contrasts with a new Satin Stainless Metallic powdercoat finish on the fork lowers, triple clamps, headlamp, handlebar riser, tank console, swing arm, turn signal housings, hand controls, belt guard, oil tank and engine trim. The frame is custom color-matched to the bodywork. The new Stop/Turn/Tail lights incorporate the stop and tail lamp functions with the rear turn indicators, eliminating the traditional tail lamp from the rear fender. (See separate release for more details on the Rocker).

Media Press Release:

HARLEY-DAVIDSON UNLEASHES ROCKER AND DYNA FAT BOB
105th Anniversary Models and ABS Option for FL and VRSC Models for 2008

MILWAUKEE (July 9, 2007) – Harley-Davidson takes factory-custom motorcycle design to a new extreme with the introduction of three radically styled new models. The Dyna Fat Bob, the Rocker and the Rocker C are additions to a diverse line of 2008 motorcycles that also includes 14 models available in limited-edition 105th Anniversary styling. A host of technical refinements for 2008 includes the availability of an all-new Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) as an option on Touring and VRSC models.

“Only Harley-Davidson could style and engineer a motorcycle as visually exciting as the new Rocker,” said Bill Davidson, director of motorcycle product development. “To offer this level of customization in a reliable, production motorcycle is simply unprecedented. We’ve also got the Fat Bob taking the Dyna platform in a bold, new direction. And the beautiful copper-and-black 105th Anniversary models are icing on the Motor Company birthday cake for 2008.”

For more than a century, Harley-Davidson motorcycles have stoked the passion of riders around the world with a distinctive combination of performance and visual appeal that simply can not be duplicated. The energy, dedication and pure enthusiasm of each individual at Harley-Davidson maintains that full-throttle intensity, season after season.

Highlights of the 2008 Harley-Davidson line include:

The new FXCW Rocker and FXCWC Rocker C feature the Rockertail rear end that mounts a form-fitting fender directly to the swingarm over a 240 mm tire. The result is a reproduction of the authentic lines of a slammed hard-tail custom with the comfortable ride of a modern suspension as the rear wheel and fender move together. The Rocker comes with a solo seat and a monochrome, satin stainless metallic paint scheme. The Rocker C is a chromed-out beauty with the innovative Trick seat that conceals a passenger pillion under a solo cushion.

Twin headlights signal the arrival of the massive new Dyna Fat Bob. The new Tommy Gun exhaust speaks pure performance, while a new seat shape and drag bars put the rider in a position that’s instant cool. Black fork lowers and handlebar risers, and a new, aggressive tread pattern on 180 mm rear tire and 130 mm front tires, reinforce the aggressive nature of this new model. The Fat Bob can be ordered from the factory with a choice of mid-mount or forward foot controls.

A limited-edition 105th Anniversary package of shimmering Anniversary Copper and Vivid Black paint, a seat with a copper-colored insert, a special copper air cleaner cover, plus exclusive badging will be offered on 14 different 2008 Harley-Davidson models. Production of these motorcycles will be limited and serialized.

A new Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) is available as a factory-installed option on all Touring and VRSC models, and is standard equipment on the 2008 Electra Glide Ultra Classic 105th Anniversary Edition, CVO Screamin’ Eagle Electra Glide Ultra Classic, and CVO Screamin’ Eagle Road King.

All VRSC models get a power boost from a high-performance, 1250cc version of the liquid-cooled Revolution V-Twin engine tuned to make up to 125 horsepower and 85 ft.-lbs. of torque. The engine is mated to a new slipper-style clutch with lighter lever action. Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) is offered as a factory-installed option on all 2008 VRSC models.

A new six-gallon fuel tank extends the range of all Touring models, which also feature new Brembo brakes and available ABS. Cruise control is now a factory-installed option on all Touring models not already equipped with this feature.

All Touring models feature a new Isolated Drive System that reduces noise and vibration to the rider for improved ride quality under acceleration, shifting and cruising.

The high-performance Twin Cam 110 engine powers four 2008 models from Harley-Davidson Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO): the Screamin’ Eagle Road King, the Screamin’ Eagle Ultra Classic Electra Glide, the Screamin’ Eagle Softail Springer, and the Screamin’ Eagle Dyna. Each features new accessories and paint schemes.

Harley-Davidson will offer 15 new color combinations for 2008, plus three custom color combinations.

RADICAL ROCKERS SEIZE THE STREETS IN 2008
A New, Slammed Hardtail Look for the Harley-Davidson Softail Platform

MILWAUKEE (July 9, 2007) – The Harley-Davidson Softail family grows in a new direction for 2008 with the introduction of the FXCW Rocker and FXCWC Rocker C. These factory customs are developed around an all-new Rockertail rear section that faithfully reproduces the profile of a slammed, hardtail frame but delivers the smooth, comfortable ride of a modern suspension.

The Rocker and Rocker C are part of a seven-model Harley-Davidson Softail line for 2008. Each Softail model represents a distinct branch of the factory-custom tree; the nostalgia of the FLSTN Softail Deluxe and FLSTC Heritage Softail Classic, the long chopper profile of the FXSTB Night Train and FXSTC Softail Custom, and the massive presence of the iconic FLSTF Fat Boy. Each Softail model interprets a styling statement with premium components and an appreciation for the kind of detail and craftsmanship that catches and holds the eye.

The Softail name is derived from the design of its rear suspension, which features a swingarm section that faithfully replicates the lines of an original, hardtail frame but provides a smooth, comfortable ride. The hidden horizontal coil-over shock absorbers for the rear suspension are mounted below the powertrain and out of sight.

The counter-balanced Twin Cam 96B powertrain is rigid-mounted in the Softail frame to give the rider a more-direct connection to the motorcycle, and also to enable a low seat height that gives the rider a feeling of sitting “in” the motorcycle. Harley-Davidson ESPFI fuel injection is standard on all Softail models, as is the 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission. A horseshoe-shaped oil tank located below the seat and a fuel tank-mounted console and ignition are other distinctive features of each Softail model.

New on all Softail models for 2008

Top-Mounted Battery: The terminal attachment points have been relocated to the top of the battery for easier service access.
Hollow Axles: New 25 mm hollow axles are assembled with new bearings, spacers and sleeves inside the wheel help stiffen the rear swingarm for a more stable feel on the road.
105th Anniversary Edition: A limited-edition, serialized 105th Anniversary Edition FLSTC Heritage Softail Classic, FXSTC Softail Custom, FLSTF Fat Boy, and FLSTN Softail Deluxe will be available in 2008 (see separate release for details on the 105th Anniversary package).
New FXCW Rocker
Brilliant chrome plating replaces most components finished with Satin Stainless Metallic powdercoat on the Rocker, including the headlamp and triple clamps, the handlebar riser, the fork lowers, and the tank console and speedometer. NEW HARLEY-DAVIDSON ROCKERS LOOK HARD AND LOW
Radical Rockertail Rear End Swaggers with Slammed, Hard Tail Styling

MILWAUKEE (July 9, 2007) – Harley-Davidson takes its Softail design in a radical direction with the introduction of the 2008 FXCW Rocker and FXCWC Rocker C, new models designed to appeal to two totally different riders. These two new custom motorcycles faithfully replicate the lines of an original, slammed hardtail, while delivering the comfortable ride of a modern rear suspension. A raked-out front end, new cast-aluminum oil tank, new saddle designs, original paint treatments and other details make the Rocker and Rocker C the most significant evolution of the Softail line since its inception in 1984.

The Rockertail
It’s the Rockertail rear end that makes a Softail a Rocker. The Rockertail utilizes an all-new rear section with elliptical tubes and no visible fender supports. As on other Softail motorcycles, the Rockertail rear shock absorbers are hidden away under the motorcycle. The rear fender is mounted just above a 240 mm x 18-inch rear tire, and the fender’s broad surface is fully exposed behind a solo saddle. The Rockertail design creates the illusion of a bone-jarring, hardtail frame. But when under way, the fender and wheel move together as the rear suspension glides through 3.4 inches of travel for a ride that’s comfortable mile after mile. Laden seat height of the FXCW Rocker is just 24.5 inches, one of the lowest seat heights available on the market today.

The FXCW Rocker
The FXCW Rocker makes an anti-everything statement that appeals to a hard riding, go-your-own-way attitude. The Rocker stretches out on a 36.5-degree fork rake that extends the wheelbase to 69.2 inches. A 19-inch tapered five-spoke cast-aluminum front wheel is finished in durable Satin Stainless Metallic powdercoat. The same finish is applied to the fork lowers, triple clamps, headlamp, handlebar riser, tank console, swingarm, turn signal housings, hand controls, belt guard, oil tank and engine trim. The frame is custom color-matched to the bodywork.

A sculpted, two-piece five-inch curved riser supports independent, V-Bar handlebar with internal wiring. A new bullet-shaped headlamp rides over beefy 49 mm Showa forks. The bullet-style turn indicators feature bright LED lamps. The new Stop/Turn/Tail lights incorporate the stop and tail lamp functions with the rear turn indicators, eliminating the traditional tail lamp from the rear fender. A stretched, five-gallon fuel tank holds a low-profile console with a polished aluminum insert, integrated indicator lamps and an angled, speed-shop style speedometer housing. A machined 3-D Bar and Shield medallion is mounted in a deboss on each side of the fuel tank.

The Rocker is powered by the counter-balanced Twin Cam 96B with ESPFI fuel injection mated to the 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission, rigid-mounted in a frame that’s color-matched to the bodywork. The powertrain is finished in Silver powdercoat with Satin Stainless Metallic powdercoat accents on the covers. Shorty dual mufflers with a new slash bend reinforce the bike’s long, low profile. A low solo seat is mounted over a finned, cast-aluminum oil tank that recalls classic hot-rod bikes of the past. The Rocker is available in three solid colors: Vivid Black, Pacific Blue Pearl and Crimson Red Sunglo; and in Vivid Black Deluxe, which features pinstripe flames.

The Rocker C
The Rocker C is a chromed-out beauty. Almost every component that was powdercoated with attitude on the Rocker has been plated with dazzling chrome on the Rocker C, from the fork tubes to the headlamp to the V-Bar riser. On the Rocker C, the swingarm and the finned, cast-aluminum horseshoe oil tank are color-matched to the paint on the frame and bodywork. The Twin Cam 96B powertrain is finished in Black and Chrome. The tank and both fenders are treated to a flowing flamed pinstripe that contrasts with the base solid-color metallic paint and cloisonné tank medallions. Polished tapered five-spoke cast aluminum wheels are standard on the Rocker C.

Passenger pegs are a clue to a surprising feature of the Rocker C. The industry-first Trick solo seat completely conceals a passenger pillion and struts that deploy over the rear fender without tools. When someone needs a lift, simply lift off the main seat cushion and fold out the pillion on its chrome plated struts. The pillion is independent of the fender, which can still move through the full suspension range. For solo riding, the pillion stows away out of sight. The Rocker C is available in three solid colors with pinstripe flames: Vivid Black Deluxe, Pacific Blue Pearl Deluxe and Crimson Red Sunglo Deluxe.
