2009 BMW K1200LT

Peak performance and absolute amenities mile after mile after mile.
Among the forty-four standard features included on the dynamically modified K 1200 LT are a higher output engine, a modified gearbox, chrome package, a redesigned instrument panel and seats, a new paint finishes, and an electro-hydraulic center stand. Engineered for high-performance hauls over endless lengths of road, the K 1200 LT offers one of the smoothest, most comfortable rides imaginable.

Man’s great dream of freedom now has a new dimension: the BMW K1200LT offers unsurpassed luxury for gliding along in relaxed comfort on the neverending open road. It also has the benefit of one or two innovations. The high-performance engine delivers 116 bhp and 120 Nm torque for swift acceleration when overtaking, even carrying a full load. The WAD spring strut with travel-dependent damping increases ride comfort especially on journeys when you have a pillion passenger and luggage. The seat has been narrowed according to an ergonomics analysis to make handling more convenient. Ground lighting makes getting on and off the bike safer. The BMW K1200LT can also offer the world’s first electrohydraulic extending centre stand. All you need now is the time to enjoy it.

Man’s great dream of freedom now has a new dimension: the BMW K 1200 LT offers unsurpassed luxury for gliding along in relaxed comfort on the neverending open road. Go west. From coast to coast.
From the Atlantic to the Pacific – straight across the American continent: unforgettable experiences and a great sense of freedom await you in the land of limitless possibilities. The latest generation of the luxury touring bike BMW K 1200 LT perfectly fulfils the dream of independent travel. Its outstanding technology is state-of-the-art, its comfort first-class, and it has everything you need for perfectly relaxed cruising, whether alone or with a pillion: a powerful 116-bhp (85-kW) engine for dynamic performance; the world’s first electro-hydraulic main stand; the ground lights; the narrower seat for safe standing and the central locking which also secures all panniers. The only thing you need now is time for enjoyment – the tour to the west coast is about to start! The first stage of the trip takes us through the winding Blue Ridge Parkway. It instantly fascinates every motorcyclist; especially on the BMW K 1200 LT, since its easy cornering capability allows it to take any combination of bends with flying colours.

The 4,500-mile westward journey couldn’t have got off to a better start.

To the best burger in the world.
Throughout North Carolina, an endless ribbon of asphalt stretches ahead to the horizon – no other traffic in sight. A solitary truck may roar past every hundred miles, but otherwise there’s just the sound of the water-cooled 85 kW (116 bhp) in-line 4-cylinder engine of the BMW K 1200 LT. And of course, your stomach might rumble after a while. Fortunately a neon sign on the Interstate 40 in Hickory heralds “Bud’s American Café”. Here there is very reliable remedy for an empty stomach: probably the best hamburger in the world. If you happen to overhear a conversation between truckers on the table next to you, they will probably be talking about the stunning design of the luxury tourer from Germany standing outside.

Memphis, Tennessee. Keep on rocking and rolling.
The Elvis Presley Boulevard promises a journey back in time to a magical place – Graceland. It’s certainly worth a visit since the property is still in the same state as it was in 1977. It’s as if the King had only just left his kingdom, so you might meet him here on any street corner. Back to the present:
on the car park filled with fans and buses, the narrow and low seat proves very helpful when manoeuvring the BMW K 1200 LT since your legs can always stand securely. With the electrical reversing aid you glide elegantly and effortlessly out of the narrow parking space and then at last emerge with plenty of swing through the bends which take you out of the town. The show must go on – after all there are still 3,500 miles to go to the west coast.

A legend on asphalt.
No road has been the subject of songs as often as the legendary Route 66. It goes without saying that everymotorcyclist would like to experience the mother of all roads at least once in a lifetime. To enable you to fully enjoy this experience to the full, the BMW K 1200 LT provides an excellent audio sound system with radio and CD player. The song “Route 66” by Bobby Troup has never sounded as authentic than when it pounds out of the four pairs of speakers. A glance at the Info Flatscreen in the cockpit is also very satisfying: the trip counter already indicates five hundred relaxed miles. This kind of luxurious touring gives every passionate motorcyclist his own personal kick.

Big. Bigger. Texas.
Dimensions are quite different in Texas: the prairie is vaster, the steaks are bigger, the cowboy hats are higher and the freight trains on the Rio Grande Main Line are longer. However, in the duel between railroad and bike, the train driver doesn’t have the slightest chance as the engine of the BMW K 1200 LT develops its enormous maximum 120 Nm of torque at just 5,250 rpm. So the luxury tourer gets you faster than expected to Tascosa, a sleepy town on Ranch Road 1061. Now and again the town wakes up for a rodeo. On these occasions, bikers get to see the difference between a ride on the BMW K 1200 LT and traditional bronco riding: an untamed horse has neither an extremely comfortable suspension – nor do you sit in the saddle for days in perfect comfort. There really is no more relaxed way to ride off into the sunset than on the BMW K 1200 LT.

The most expensive highway in the world.
The famous Million Dollar Highway runs from Ouray to Silverton. This stretch of road was built with the gravel from the old mines and genuinely does contain a lot of gold dust. But the real wealth is beyond the road itself: here the wonderful landscape stretches away into the distance with its rainbow-coloured vegetation providing a habitat not only for elks, bears and deer but also hummingbirds. And if a coyote does happen to cross the path of the BMW K 1200 LT, the standard BMW Motorrad Integral ABS responds absolutely and reliably to any emergency stop.

Both director and lead actor – in your very own road movie.
Monument Valley – it was for this amazing panorama that Hollywood invented widescreen cinema. Against the background of legendary westerns and fierce sandstorms, it’s best to put the electrically adjustable windshield in an optimum position, sit back comfortably in the heatable leather seat and
switch on the cruise control of the BMW K 1200 LT. This way you can sit back and be fascinated by the gigantic natural spectacle and the Elephant’s Feet. After this show, the journey continues via the Hoover Dam into the gambling city of Las Vegas.

A single lucky streak.
From the Atlantic to Nevada and on. Las Vegas arises out of the desert sand in surreal fashion, like an alien planet. Millions of flickering lights are reflected in the shiny chrome. The BMW K 1200 LT lands gently on the strip – like an UFO, at least this is the impression created by the ground lights. At the
press of a button, the luxury tourer rises on its electrohydraulic main stand and virtually automatically places itself firmly and squarely in the lamplight. The central locking is equally convenient – by remote control. The luxury tourer is now completely secured, including all panniers. A moment later the dust of the road disappears in the whirlpool of a penthouse suite at the world famous Bellagio.

On to the destination of your dreams for three dollars.
To glide across the Golden Gate Bridge once in a lifetime – this great dream is easy to fulfil since the ticket costs no more than two cups from the coffee-to-go-shop in San Francisco. Now place the hot cup in the cup holder of the BMW K 1200 LT. On the famous Highway Number One you get a free helping of the spice that goes with your coffee: the salty Pacific air makes the airstream truly envigorating for every biker. Incidentally, after a few weeks of freedom on the west coast, a visit to Alcatraz is recommended. A couple of hours on the prison island will quickly bring back your hunger for freedom and luxury. After all, the best is yet to come: the return trip.

The best way to cross America. From East to West.
01 mile 0003 Half way between the Capitol and the White House, exotic dishes await you at the Old Post Office. 02 mile 0195 The Luray caves are famous for the sounds of the stalagmite organ. 03 mile 0454 At the Laughing Seed Café in Asheville, excellent vegetarian food is available – try the Mondo Max Nachos. 04 mile 0733 Fort Nashborough is a reconstruction of the fortifications built by the early pioneers against Indian attack. 05 mile 0944 The live music show in B. B. King’s Blues Club is unique even for Memphis. 06 mile 1169 Follow the signs of the historic Route 66, taking care not to lose the Mother Road in Springfield. 07 mile 1352 At the centre of the universe in Tulsa there is an amazingly
powerful and rather mysterious echo. 08 mile 1723 Huge buffalo herds are still to be found by Lake Meredith near Amarillo. 09 mile 1988 One of the buildings in Santa Rosa bears genuine traces of the Wild West: an original bullet hole made by Billy the Kid. 10 mile 2163 All the exhibits in the Turquoise Museum in Albuquerque have one thing in common: the colour turquoise. 11 mile 2483 The Aztec Ruins National Monument has nothing to do with the Aztecs. It contains dwellings of the Anasazi Indians. 12 mile 2628 The almost 23-mile long Rim Rock Drive leads directly along the edge of the Canyon of the Colorado National Monument. 13 mile 2770 At the Four Corners Monument you can be in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado simultaneously. 14 mile 2898 At Marble Canyon a huge steel bridge crosses the Colorado River, which lies 142 metres below. 15 mile 3092 Lake Mead Lodge offers a magnificent panorama of Lake Mead, as well as comfortable overnight accommodation. 16 mile 3283 From Zabriskie Point enjoy a grand view of the craggy Death Valley landscape. 17 mile 3684 The 17 Mile Drive is the most beautiful section of Highway No.1. This is also where the famous solitary cypress tree stands on a cliff. 18 mile 3822 The Last Chance Saloon gave author Jack London the inspiration for his world famous novels.

Perfection is its strength.

More power and increased output for even more sublime touring. The water-cooled in-line 4-cylinder engine has a capacity of 1172 cc, and a power output of an impressive 116 bhp (85 kW). However, much more important for dealing with the variety of riding situations encountered on long-distance tours is a powerful torque curve. The 100 Nm boundary is crossed at 2800 rpm. At 5250 rpm, the engine delivers an impressive 120 Nm. More than enough to be able to pull away powerfully even at idling engine speed and to accelerate swiftly – complete with rider, pillion and luggage.

Perfect parking at the push of a button.

Move the K 1200 LT at the press of a button. The electro-hydraulic main stand is activated at the right-hand side of the handlebars. An electric pump builds up pressure in a hydraulic system and extends the main stand. Even with a full load, the luxury tourer glides effortlessly onto its electrohydraulic main stand. This exclusive feature equally increases convenience and safety. It enables the bike to be parked in narrow parking spaces and eliminates any possibility of the bike tipping over as with manual stand operation.

Absolutely necessary luxury. The excellent brake system.

The standard BMW Motorrad ABS, in its fully integral version with brake booster, enables highly effective deceleration with maximum safety. Complete locking of the wheels is prevented and the maximum amount of brake pressure is automatically transferred so that the wheels remain just short of the locking boundary. The fully integral brake system always takes effect on both wheels – whether you use the hand lever or the pedal. The new pressure modulator ensures that the brake force is perfectly calibrated for the double-disc brake at the front and the singledisc brake at the rear, depending on load and road conditions.

A successful track record. With Telelever and Paralever.

Accurate directional stability, first-class handling, impressive comfort and ride stability on bends all come as standard with this chassis. At the front there is the patented BMW Motorrad Telelever – the unique combination of telefork and swing arm construction with central strut. This also reduces brake dive to a minimum. At the rear, the BMW Motor rad Paralever takes on the function of rear wheel guidance and power transmission. Suspension and damping is effected by means of a central WAD (travel-related damping) strut, which increases damping during the compression phase. The adjustable hydraulic pre-tension of the strut is especially useful. Simply raise the seat, fold out the hand-wheel,
adjust the pretension and the K 1200 LT is prepared for two-person use or loading of the 120 litres storage space. The 40° lean capacity can thus be enjoyed to the full.

A really good suit is worn without a tie.

The longer the tour, the more important it is you have the right partner. And for the journey across America, there is no more re liable partner than the Atlantis 3 Pro suit. The robust leather, up to 1.4 mm thick, is permanently waterproof due to hydrophobic treatment and will take you through thick and thin. This suit is fitted with CE protectors at the shoulders, elbows and knees, a back support, a retrofittable GORE-TEX® insert and all-round connector zip.

The combination of GORE-TEX® XCR® laminate and the TFL® Cool System with Armacor™ and Cordura® makes the Streetguard 2 suit a genuine all-rounder. It offers excellent temperature regulation in virtually all weather conditions – the Cool System prevents the suit from overheating when exposed to strong sunlight, while the three-layer GORE-TEX® XCR® laminate is 25% more breathable than conventional three-layer laminates. It also features removable BMW Motorrad CE protectors in the knee, shin, shoulder, elbow/underarm, back and hip areas, a removable thermal inner in both the jacket and the trousers, and a detachable storm collar.

Luxury as standard.
Whichever way you look at it, the K 1200 LT is something special, and its refined style is emphasised by the numerous chrome parts. The highresolution Info Flatscreen provides a comprehensive range of information, including total and trip mileage, time, gear display, air and water temperature, ice warning, average fuel consumption, fuel level indicator and radio information. Heated grips and cruise control are two more standard features that improve the comfort of the riding experience.

Unique even when it comes off the factory production line. Thanks to individualised optional equipment.

The BMW K 1200 LT scarcely leaves anything to be desired even with its standard fittings. With the factory-fitted optional equipment, you can fulfil your individual dreams of luxury touring. For example, your motorcycle can be supplied with a complete installation kit for the new BMW Motorrad Navigator. With the optional central locking system, panniers topcase and storage compartment can all be locked by pressing a single button on the remote control. It is included in a package with the anti-theft warning system and ground lights. Safety is significantly enhanced by the specially developed Xenon headlight.* The spectral composition of its beam is very similar to that of natural light, meaning it puts less strain on the eyes, and as it is twice as powerful as a standard halogen beam, it gives significantly better and more even illumination of the road ahead, and makes the bike a lot more visible. At BMW Motorrad, we believe safety and luxury are two sides of the same coin.
