The Suzuki Gixxer Cup has gained a reputation for perpetually raising the bar since its inception in 2015, and now in its third year, Suzuki has teamed-up with JK Tyre Motorsport to run along with the JK-NRC Racing Championship, considered as India’s premier motorsports event under affiliation of the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India.
This season will include four rounds of the Suzuki Gixxer Cup, from July-to-November, at Indian’s two iconic venues, Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore and at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida.
The first round was held at Kari Motor Speedway this weekend and witnessed an action-packed spectacle with riders going through practice, qualifying and then two races in each of the categories – Suzuki Gixxer Cup and also the Red Bull Road to Rookies Cup. The race-prepared Suzuki Gixxer SF motorcycles saw a level playing field for all the riders and witnessed some real up-close and thrilling racing for the spectators.
The Red Bull Road to Rookies Cup races were both won by Sri Lankan sensation Jaden Gunawardena, while the remaining two spots on the podium were taken up in Race 1 by the duo of Lalhruaizela and Lalnunsanga from Mizoram and Race 2 by a closely-fought Varoon S of Chennai and Lalhruaizela of Mizoram for second and third positions respectively.
The Suzuki Gixxer Cup Race 1 had a battle for the top positions between Joseph Matthew taking victory and Sanjeev Mhatre second, with another battle for third place between two Mizoram riders, Lalmawipuia and Malsawmdawngliana, with Lalmawipuia taking the final podium position.
The second Suzuki Gixxer Cup race was again a spectacular and exciting event with four riders battling throughout the entire 10 laps; and continuously changing places right down to the finish line. Joseph Matthew clinched victory from Malsawmdawngliana and Lalmawipuia with a gap of just 0.7-seconds between the three of them.
Suzuki Gixxer Cup and Red Bull Road to Rookies Cup return to Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore for Round 2 on the weekend of August 4-6th.
