The Unrelenting Mission of Excellence Continues

For riders who want the GSX-R experience in a middleweight machine, Suzuki introduced the GSX-R600. Kunio Arase, project leader for this new member of the GSX-R family, says he started development with a mission: “The mission shared by every engineer for succeeding models of the legendary GSX-R line has been to surpass the performance of any existing model in its class. We determined to achieve the fastest top speed and starting acceleration, yet the production model had to be transformable to a winning circuit racer with minimal modification. Indeed, the first GSX-R600 realized a top speed faster than that of the GSX-R750 two years earlier, taking the World Supersport Championship for two consecutive years.”

1992 Suzuki GSX-R600N

With the launch of the Suzuki GSX-R600 in 1992 the stage was set for a mid-sized, light weight, high potential superbike. The 1992 Suzuki GSX-R600 had the same specifications as the 1992 GSX-R750 but with a 600cc water-cooled 599cc inline-4 engine installed in the 750 frame. This lead to the first model having a lower horsepower to weight ratio versus other GSX-R600’s to come.

Between 1992 and 1996 there were not many GSX-R600’s produced as they were intended and destined for the race track and were not available outside of North America. Even fewer exist today due to many being damaged or destoryed in such a hard environment.
