The Multistrada V4 covers a variety of souls. The “Sport”, light and compact, powered by 170 hp, advanced electronic MotoGP aid system together with a chassis set-up featuring agile dimensions for an exciting and effective ride in mixed terrain. The Multistrada V4 is also “Touring”, thanks to the main maintenance intervals set every 60,000 km, obsessive attention to ride comfort, all-new front and rear Radar systems, cartographic navigation system, directly viewed on the dashboard, as well as cornering lights. It also has an “Enduro” mood thanks to its out-of-the-ordinary off-road capability, electronic suspensions, smooth delivery, and gear ratio. Lastly, it reveals its “Urban” character with unprecedented handling at low speeds, which is combined with top-level connectivity system and thermal comfort.

Multistrada, its name holds an ambitious promise: the ability to dominate “many roads” (to be precise, in Italian “multi” stands for “many” so “Multi-Strada” means “many roads”). Initially born to show a sporty attitude it is now a versatile machine, capable of tackling whatever road conditions while integrating safety and robustness features.

In 18 years more than 110,000 units have been produced and since its birth, in 2003, the Multistrada has constantly evolved and expanded its vocation. The first Multistrada was designed as a sports bike, featuring excellent torque and mainly suitable for a road use. The 2010 version was the first “four bikes in one”, namely the first motorcycle in the world featuring Riding Modes, which compared to the 2003 version offered greater comfort for both rider and passenger, better aerodynamic protection and higher performance. In 2015, to improve throttle delivery, it was equipped with the first variable-timing engine.

The fourth generation Multistrada has become an even more performing bike. In short, easier to ride, more robust and ultra-light, more versatile and comfortable yet effective in every single riding condition. It is clear that Ducati wanted the Multistrada V4 to be an unrivalled top-performer. Like other bikes in the Multistrada family, the V4 is available with the “4Ever Multistrada”, a 4-year warranty with unlimited mileage (Country Specific: Europe only).

 

With the new Multistrada V4, dominating all roads has never been so easy. This one-of-a-kind motorcycle not only combines the pleasure of on-asphalt sporty riding, but also gives overall satisfaction and easy off-road handling together with unprecedented comfort on longer journeys and in everyday use.

Production of the Multistrada V4 has begun at the Ducati factory in Borgo Panigale: the first motorcycle to use front and rear radar technology. The Multistrada V4 marks a turning point for the Bologna-based motorcycle manufacturer and will be officially presented on November 4.

For the fourth generation of the Multistrada, Ducati has developed a new, light and compact V4 engine, designed to meet the needs required for “adventouring” use without neglecting emotion and sportiness. The complete redesign made it possible to reach record-breaking maintenance intervals for the world of two wheels. All the details of this new engine will be revealed on October 15.

Ducati brings the option of radar on production bikes, confirming what was anticipated in 2018 (See Below: A Ducati featuring front and rear radar already in the pipeline for 2020). The adoption of these systems promises to be a true revolution for the world of two wheels, marking a new level of excellence in terms of comfort and riding assistance, especially on long motorway journeys.

Radar is an advanced aid system capable of supporting and making riding more comfortable thanks to the ability to reconstruct the reality surrounding the motorcycle. Ducati’s interest in this type of system dates back to 2016, when the Company worked in collaboration with the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering of the Politecnico di Milano to experiment with this type of system. This first experience has confirmed the applicability of this kind of technology to vehicles on two wheels, and has pushed Ducati to the creation of a complete package of riding assistance using front and rear facing radar units that, within four years, have been developed and produced in close cooperation with Bosch, a top-level technology partner, and sees its first application on the new Multistrada V4.

Each radar has compact dimensions (70 x 60 x 28 mm, similar to a modern action camera) and integrates perfectly into the bike, weighing only 190 grams.

The radar positioned in the front of the vehicle controls the operation of the ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), which by means of controlled braking and acceleration automatically adjusts the distance (selectable on four levels) from other vehicles when riding at a speed between 30 and 160 km/h. This car-derived system has been evolved and developed according to the dynamics and ergonomics of a two-wheeled vehicle. In particular, the authority of the system in terms of deceleration and acceleration has been limited in order to ensure the rider can maintain constant control of the vehicle in any situation. The system allows for more comfortable riding, especially on long motorway journeys.

The rear radar, on the other hand, is able to detect and report vehicles positioned in the so-called blind spot, i.e. the area not visible either directly by the rider or through the rear-view mirror. The BSD (Blind Spot Detection) system also signals the approaching from behind of vehicles at high speed.

To underline the technical-scientific value of the research project, carried out jointly by Ducati engineers and researchers and undergraduates from the Politecnico di Milano, a patent application relating to the control algorithms of this system was filed in May 2017. In June 2017, a scientific publication was presented at the IEEE – Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV) in Redondo Beach, California.

When shape meets function

In all Ducati sartorial motoring projects, Multistrada V4 included, shape is constantly related to its intended function. For this reason, the design work behind this project was influenced by its technical soul. A clear example of this principle is the perfect integration of the front and rear radar system into the lines of the bike, where wide surfaces smoothly embody aerodynamics and chassis set-up innovations, in order to bring a robust yet refined aesthetic result. To visually increase the overall touch of solidity of use without adding weight to the shapes, the Ducati team’s effort has gone into perfect balancing of proportions and compactness of the bodywork within the wheelbase. The front headlight, featuring DRL system inspired by the Panigale, makes the Multistrada V4 very sporty and immediately recognizable. The unbalanced vehicle proportions of the front, featuring muscular yet sexy lines which perfectly integrate the 22-litre tank, are mixed with the sleek rear section that allows an optimal position even when standing in off-road adventures. Once again shape and function are protagonists in the meticulous studies concerning aerodynamic flows. Every single element of the front, from the Perspex fairing to the “beak” and even the air vent slits, has been designed to ensure the rider supreme aerodynamic and thermal comfort. Even the small aerodynamic appendages, which help draw heat off the rider’s legs, perform this function.

 

Beating heart

The engine is the beating heart of a bike. Extremely light (66.7 kg) and ultra-compact, unrivalled within its category the all-new V4 Granturismo engine guarantees extremely smooth operation at low revs and linear torque curve as well.

The 1158 cc V4 Granturismo engine delivers 125 kW (170 hp) at 10,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 125 Nm (12.7 Kgm) at 8,750 rpm. The torque curve ensures maximum smoothness and delivery progression, even fully loaded, giving that appealing feeling of a real “instant throttle response”. To achieve this goal great attention has been reserved for the torque curves dedicated to each gear, in order to always obtain a fluid delivery at low revs, rich in torque in the mid-range and a sporty, unstoppable character at the highs. In addition, Ducati engineers also concentrated on the gear ratio, with a short first gear and therefore excellent for travelling and manoeuvring at extremely low speeds, uphill starts even when fully loaded and off-road sections. The sixth gear, instead, results ideal to tackle lengthy motorway travel.

Ducati’s constant care to customer needs is also underlined by a high increase in maintenance intervals. As a matter of fact, on the Multistrada V4 the oil only needs changing every 15,000 km intervals, while the valve play check, or adjustment if necessary, is set every 60,000 km intervals. No other production bike currently available on the market goes that far.

The V4 Granturismo engine has been designed for road use and it also exploits, when needed, all the technical benefits that Ducati has developed over years of experience in the world of competition. Among these, the counter-rotating crankshaft, which by working “against” the inertia generated by the wheels, enhances handling, reduces pitching, and consequently improves efficiency and riding pleasure even on the road.

Ducati has always been at the forefront regarding safety: the only motorcycle manufacturer world-wide to have a vehicle able to interact with the jacket-integrated D|air® system, and the first company in the industry to equip a heritage/classic model, the Ducati Scrambler 1100, with the ABS Cornering system. This level of safety awareness, combined with the constant drive towards innovation, have led the Bologna-based manufacturer to define its safety strategy until 2025.
 
At the basis of this many-sided strategic plan is the implementation, in the short term, of ARAS (Advanced Rider Assistance Systems) on Ducati motorcycles. Advanced assistance systems increase rider safety levels via a number of sensors, including radars. These, in particular, are able to provide feedback on the surrounding environment – helping to prevent possible collisions with obstacles or other vehicles by alerting the rider.
 
Ducati started developing these systems as early as 2016, in conjunction with the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering of the Politecnico di Milano University. The study has led to the development of a warning system based on a rear radar, able to identify and point out vehicles present in the “blind spot” (i.e. the section of the road not visible either directly or in the rear-view mirror), or traffic approaching at high speed from behind. To highlight the technical and scientific value of this research project, developed by Ducati employees, University researchers and undergraduates, in May 2017 a patent application was filed concerning the system control algorithms, and a Scientific Publication was presented at the IEEE – Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV) on June 11-14, 2017, at Redondo Beach, CA, USA.
 
Again in 2017, the Italian manufacturers selected a primary technological partner to ensure system suitability for production – by completing the package with a second radar sensor positioned at the front. The purpose of this device will be to manage the adaptive cruise control, allowing a given distance (which can be set by the user) to be maintained from the vehicle in front, and warning the rider of any risks of distraction-related head-on collisions. All these systems, together with an advanced user interface designed to alert the rider to any existing dangers, will be available on one of the Ducati models coming in 2020.
 
The first actual step of this strategy called “Safety Road Map 2025” has already been implemented and includes the progressive extension of Bosch ABS Cornering to the whole product range. This system enhances active braking ensuring top-level safety. If standard ABS ensures control of tyre grip loss during braking only when the motorcycle is travelling in a straight line, the more advanced Cornering version allows full braking grip control even when cornering, effectively ruling out the risk of falling during the delicate corner-entry phase. Ducati has confirmed its safety strategy value by introducing the Bosch ABS Cornering system also in its Ducati Scrambler family – fitting it to the top-of-the-range version, the 1100.
 
Additionally, in 2014, Ducati introduced the only motorcycle in the world able to interact with the Airbag jacket, the Multistrada 1200 D|air®. This system, now available on Ducati’s Multistrada 1260 D|air®, is designed to deploy in just 45 milliseconds (much faster than a stand-alone system), protecting both the rider’s and passenger’s exposed body parts by absorbing impact forces via an airbag expertly built into the rider’s jacket by Dainese. The airbag is capable of split-second inflation before the rider and possibly passenger collide with the obstacle, and is intelligent enough to sense the difference between a potentially dangerous accident and a low-speed incident or a stationary motorcycle simply falling over.

Built with latest-generation technology as well as first-in-class materials available, in order to guarantee both durability and reliability, the V4 Granturismo stands out for its record-breaking maintenance intervals for a motorcycle engine and has been created as the heart of a high-performance and dynamic bike, ready to explore every corner of the planet with its owner.

Every single technical choice made during the development of the V4 Granturismo project was aimed at ensuring maximum fluidity of operation combined with a substantial extension of maintenance intervals.

The new distribution includes a spring valve return system, bringing the maintenance intervals of the V4 Granturismo to 60,000 km. This was achieved thanks to the in-depth expertise Ducati has acquired in the use of materials, treatments and technical solutions developed around the Desmodromic system. All this, applied to a spring valve return system which stresses the components less if compared to the Desmo, produced to set an outstanding milestone never set before by a motorcycle engine. In addition, the engine ensures great regularity of operation at both low revs and loads, without forgetting the outright performance, the power at high revs and the reach of an authentic sports engine: the V4 Granturismo delivers 125 kW (170 hp) at 10.500 rpm and a maximum torque of 125 Nm (12.7 Kgm) at 8.750 rpm. All this respecting the stringent Euro 5 homologation norms.

With the weight of 66.7 kg, the V4 Granturismo can boast a record lightness, being 1.2 kg lighter than the Testastretta twin-cylinder used on the previous Multistrada 1260. The 1,158 cc displacement came out as being the perfect point of connection in terms of performance, lightness and dimension of a V4 engine, capable of being incredibly light and compact. Compared to the previous generation engine, the V4 Granturismo measures 85 mm shorter, 95 mm lower and only 20 mm wider. This compact layout allowed Ducati engineers to house the engine in the frame more effectively and centrally to positively influence the position of the bike’s center of gravity, with all the resulting benefits.

The V4 Granturismo also inherits some elements derived from the experience gained by Ducati in the racing world, such as the decision to adopt a counter-rotating crankshaft, which improves the handling and agility of the bike, and to exploit the “Twin Pulse” technology, capable of offering a full-bodied and perfectly manageable power delivery at every speed.

To avoid a reduction in thermal comfort due to the heat transmitted by the rear cylinders, the V4 Granturismo adopts the strategy of deactivating the rear bank at idle. In this way, when the bike is stationary, the combustion process in the cylinders is halted and this improves the thermal comfort of the rider and passenger thanks to the reduction of the temperature while simultaneously reducing fuel consumption.

Borgo Panigale, Bologna, November 4, 2020 – Ducati has unveiled the new Multistrada V4 to the world during the first episode of the Ducati World Première web series.

The Multistrada has a name that alone encapsulates an ambitious promise to keep: the ability to offer great versatility. In fact, it was born with the intention of being a sporty yet comfortable motorcycle, able to tackle any road condition, asphalt or dirt road, with safety and solidity.

In 18 years, over 110,000 units have been produced and since its inception in 2003 it has been able to evolve, expanding its scope of use. The first Multistrada was a sports bike, with good torque and mainly suitable for road use. The 2010 version was the first “four bikes in one,” the first bike in the world with Riding Mode. In 2015, however, the first engine equipped with variable timing was presented, which improved the smoothness of delivery.

The fourth generation of Multistrada is an even more performing bike, but still easier to ride. More robust and at the same time lighter. More versatile and comfortable, but effective in all riding conditions. In other words, Ducati wanted the Multistrada V4 to be the best “Multi” ever. In short, more Multistrada than ever.

The Multistrada V4 is “Sport” because it is light and compact, has 170 hp, electronic MotoGP aids and a chassis with agile dimensions for an exciting and effective ride on mixed terrain. It is “Touring” thanks to the main maintenance intervals set every 60,000 km, to the obsessive attention paid in the development phase to ride comfort, to the Radar systems (the first motorcycle in the world to have both front and rear), to the map navigator that can be viewed on the dashboard and to the cornering lights. It is “Enduro” thanks to excellent off-road capabilities, electronic suspension, smooth delivery, and gear ratios. It is “Urban” because it guarantees great ease of use at low speeds, but also thanks to smartphone connectivity and a careful study of thermal comfort. This explains why dominating all the roads has never been easier.

The design work done on the Multistrada V4 is extremely functional to its technical spirit and has given rise to a solid, robust, yet refined aesthetic result. Ducati designers have worked on the proportions and compactness of the motorcycle body within the wheelbase, to favour the perfect combination of form and function. This fact is immediately noticeable by the predominant volumes on the front with muscular but sexy lines to integrate the 22-litre tank, combined with the slim rear that allows an optimal riding position even when standing in off-road sections. The study of the aerodynamic flows was aimed at guaranteeing the maximum possible comfort for the rider.

The engine is the real beating heart of this bike: the V4 Granturismo. Lightweight (66.7 kg) and compact, it has a lot of punch but proves to be exceptionally smooth and fluid at low revs, with a lot of backbone in the mid-range and exciting at high revs. The V4 Granturismo has a displacement of 1,158 cc and delivers 170 hp (125 kW) at 10,500 rpm with a maximum torque of 125 Nm (12.7 kgm) at 8,750 rpm. In addition, adopting this engine allows for a significant lengthening of maintenance intervals: on the Multistrada V4 the oil change is scheduled every 15,000 km, while valve clearance check and eventual adjustment is required every 60,000 km. No bike in production goes that far.

The electronic package of the Multistrada V4 is  state-of-the-art in the motorcycle sector for safety, comfort, performance, and connectivity. The inertial platform (IMU) manages the operation of ABS Cornering, Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC), Ducati Traction Control (DTC), here in “cornering” version and, on the Multistrada V4 S, the Cornering Lights (DCL).

Also standard on the Multistrada V4 S is Vehicle Hold Control (VHC), which makes it easy to restart on sloping roads. On the Multistrada V4 S, the inertial platform also communicates continuously with the semi-active Ducati Skyhook Suspension (DSS) control system with Autoleveling function.

With the Multistrada V4, Ducati also introduces an absolute first in the world of motorcycles: the revolutionary front and rear radar system, which allows the use of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Blind Spot Detection (BSD). The radar is an advanced auxiliary systems that Ducati has developed together with a top-level technological partner such as Bosch and are able to support and make riding more comfortable thanks to the ability to reconstruct the reality surrounding the bike.

The Multistrada V4 is equipped with an aluminum monocoque frame, 19-inch front wheel and double-sided swingarm, capable of accommodating spoked wheels. It has a limited wheelbase (1,567 mm), a sporty front end, suspension with large travel (170 mm front wheel and 180 mm rear wheel), ground clearance of 220 mm and a dry weight of 215 kg. All this allows the Multistrada V4 to be intuitive and effective around the corners like a real Ducati and at the same time easy to ride and versatile for both on-road and off-road use.

With the aim of making long motorway journeys more comfortable, Ducati engineers paid great attention during the design and development phase to what in the automotive world is called Noise, Vibration, Harshness (NVH), or rather the measure of the general level of comfort of the vehicle.

In this sense, a careful aerodynamic study – also in the wind tunnel – was carried out to obtain the best possible protection for the rider and passenger from the air, reduce hissing noises and divert the heat coming from the engine away from the rider’s legs. The result is a Plexiglas screen with a new shape, adjustable in height with a single finger, associated with two side deflectors. The shapes of the handguards and the parts most exposed to the air have been studied in detail, as well as the “sound” of the engine, which is refined but always present and with the Ducati tone. The V4 Granturismo engine also adopts the strategy of deactivating the rear bank at idle. In this way, when the bike is stopped at the traffic lights, the rear bank is deactivated (there is no combustion in the cylinders), thus improving the thermal comfort of the rider and passenger thanks to a lowering of the temperature and reducing the fuel consumption.

The Multistrada V4 has many different configuration possibilities to meet the needs of the most diverse customers. The standard V4 model is available in red and represents the version dedicated to those who love the 170 hp engine and 215 kg of weight.

The central model of the range, the V4 S, is available in “Aviator Grey” color as well as in red. The Ducati Multistrada V4 S can be ordered with both alloy wheels and spoked wheels. For this motorcycle, Ducati has thought of a new package of configurations that can be ordered directly from the factory (Essential, Travel, Radar, Performance, Full).

The third version is the Multistrada V4 S Sport, which offers a particularly bold dedicated livery and the standard Performance package with Akrapovič exhaust and carbon front fender.

The new Ducati Multistrada V4 will be available in Ducati dealerships starting January 2021.

State-of-the-art electronics

On the electronics front, the Multistrada V4 represents the state-of-the-art in the motorcycle sector. That is true in terms of safety, comfort, performance, and connectivity features as well. The inertial platform (IMU) manages the operation of ABS Cornering, Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC), Ducati Traction Control (DTC), in the “cornering” version and, on the Multistrada V4 S, the Cornering Lights (DCL). Another as-standard feature on the Multistrada V4 S is Vehicle Hold Control (VHC), which makes restarts easier, especially on a gradient. On the Multistrada V4 S, the inertial platform also communicates with the semi-active Ducati Skyhook Suspension (DSS) system. The latter is not only capable of analysing riding conditions and adjusting the hydraulics of the fork and shock absorber instantly, but – for the first time – it also integrates the Autoleveling function. This recognizes the load on the bike and then autonomously adjusts the setting and is offered in addition to the options already available: rider only, rider with luggage, rider with passenger or rider with passenger and luggage. The tyre pressure monitoring system is also available as an optional for the Multistrada V4.

To further improve the customer’s riding experience, Ducati technicians have completely revised both user interface and dashboard graphics (now multilingual), which on the Multistrada V4 S features an adjustable 6.5-inch TFT unit. Furthermore, on the S version a joystick has been added in the left switchgear, to ensure easy navigation through the new and intuitive menu. Other new features include the Ducati Connect system, which allows, via Bluetooth and wi-fi, the “mirroring” function of the mobile phone app on the dashboard and control via the joystick. Phone and music management results intuitive, while using the Sygic navigation app the rider can visualize the navigation system map directly on the dashboard. Finally, in the upper section of the tank a compartment has been obtained, accessible via a small door, in which it is possible to store the smartphone and keep it charged via an USB port.

Thanks to the Multistrada V4 Ducati also introduces an absolute gem in the world of motorcycles: the revolutionary Radar system, which allows the use of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Blind Spot Detection (BSD). Radars are advanced aid systems that Ducati have developed in close collaboration with a top-level technology partner like Bosch, systems capable of supporting and making riding more comfortable thanks to the ability to reconstruct the reality surrounding the motorbike.

 

Performing, comfortable, intuitive

The Multistrada V4 is equipped with an aluminium monocoque frame, 19” front wheel, double-sided swing arm and is also available with spoked wheels. It has a reduced wheelbase (1,567 mm), sporty front end, suspensions with long travel (170 mm front-180 mm rear), ground clearance of 220 mm and a dry weight of 215 kg. All this allows the Multistrada V4 to be intuitive and effective between curves like an authentic Ducati and at the same time results easy to ride and versatile for both on and off-road challenges. For this reason, with the Multistrada V4 each journey turns into a beautiful adventure, always within everyone’s reach.

Riding fun and great comfort are achieved thanks to Ducati’s careful study on riding position. Compared to previous Multistrada models, now the rider is even more protagonist with a more “dominant” position. The central section of the bike is particularly narrow and allows an ideal riding position even when riding standing in off-road sections. New ergonomics also provides a solid support when the rider puts his feet on the ground, to better manoeuvre the bike when stationary. For this reason, a lot of attention was paid during the design phase to achieve a reduced seat height, two-position adjustable, 840 mm and 860 mm (810 mm low seat and 875 mm high seat are also available as accessories). This added value is crucial especially in low speed manoeuvres, even when fully loaded, also because the new Multistrada V4 can load over 230 kg.

To maximize comfortable long-distance motorway travelling Ducati engineers focused their attention on what in the automotive world is known as Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH), which is basically a measure of the comfort delivered by a vehicle while driving. A detailed aerodynamic study, also in the wind tunnel, was carried out for the Multistrada V4 project, in order to obtain the best air protection both for rider and passenger, reducing noise and keeping away the heat coming from the engine. The result is a Perspex screen with a beautiful silhouette, adjustable in height with a single finger and combined with two side deflectors. From the shape of the handguards to the overall protection from the air, every aspect has been studied in detail. Equally, the sound of the engine, which results gentle yet rich and characterized by the exclusive Ducati soundtrack. The V4 Granturismo engine also adopts the strategy of deactivating the rear bank at idle. In doing so, when the bike is stopped at the traffic lights, the rear bank is deactivated (there is no combustion in the cylinders), improving the thermal comfort of the rider and passenger, thanks to the lowering of temperatures and reduced consumption. All this, together with the very low level of vibrations makes even the longest journey more pleasant to ride and less tiring, whether alone or in a pair. Furthermore, with the constant aim of maximising comfort, heated grips and heated rider and passenger seats are still available (as accessories).

 

Packs and trims

Introducing the new Multistrada V4, also available in the S and S Sport versions (both offered with spoked wheels as option), Ducati aims to innovate even the purchasing procedure. The customer will be free to order the all-new Multistrada V4 already equipped and embellished with exclusive trims, personalising it according to his own style and needs. In short, the motorcycle is directly built at the Ducati factory in Borgo Panigale with the required equipment while accessory packs are still available at Ducati dealers.

With the new Multistrada, dominating all roads has never been so easy.

 

Design

 New, different yet unmistakable. While the new V4 is immediately recognizable as a Multistrada, it also marks a change of direction not only in terms of engine and technology but also in terms of design. Its brand-new V4 Granturismo engine, monocoque frame, 19” front wheel as well as its elegantly “rugged” appearance add an out-of-the-ordinary point of view in the maxi enduro field. While its design closely echoes the first iconic Multistrada (mass loaded on the front, extremely sleek rear section and ultra-compact front end) the new Multistrada V4 goes beyond borders, right where rider, machine and technology create a perfect whole.

Ducati designers focused their meticulous attention on clean and sleek lines. On the Multistrada V4 design and functionality are perfectly combined to offer supreme ergonomics. This means that riders can place their feet on the ground more easily thanks to the narrow seat positioned in the legs area, and thus have the ease of moving even when standing. The Multistrada V4 stands out for its refined silhouette and at the same time it is capable of speaking the language of adventure and passion for long-distance trips.

The new Multistrada V4 brings to the next level one of the main principles of Multistrada. Each one of its four souls with its Riding Modes (Sport, Touring, Urban, Enduro), is not only represented by specific engine character and set-up but also defined from the point of view of design. Multistrada V4 comes with sturdy side panels to support Enduro riding. It is also agile to satisfy the sportiest of enthusiasts, not to mention the fact that is offered with panniers with integrated attachments, an extra protective windscreen, and comfortable seats to face long adventure rides as well. In short, this is the Multi most Multi ever.

The result was achieved by transforming all the technical and functional elements into design features. The work of the designers also focused on perfectly integrating every single component of the bike. From the front and rear radars to the aerodynamic appendages, from the perspex screen to the dashboard, from handlebar switchgear to the compartment for storing and recharging the smartphone: every single detail has been embodied to give life to one of the most technologically advanced motorcycles ever built.

The dashboard reflects exactly the new concept of performance and function behind the Multistrada. Wide readable dashboard, never so complete, inspired by the aeronautical dashboards containing a vast quantity of information immediately readable and thus capable of preventing distractions while riding.

Stylistic features that make the new V4 immediately recognizable as a Multistrada are still maintained, starting from the dual headlight. While it now features a new DRL design it also creates a strong family feeling with the Panigale V4, a signature feature that makes unmistakable every Ducati of this segment.

Shape meets function also in the extensive research of aerodynamic flows. Every single element of the front, from the Perspex windscreen to the “beak” and even the air vent slits, has been designed to ensure the rider supreme aerodynamic and thermal comfort. Even the small aerodynamic appendages which help draw heat off the rider’s legs perform this function.

In keeping with Ducati’s philosophy, new Multistrada V4 lines appear clean and taut while gaining that rugged charm that every maxi enduro must show off. Its appealing touch is also underlined by the rear “naked” subframe, inspired by professional off-road bikes. This reveals once again an aggressive look, however, combined with a particular focus on functionality by integrating the attachments for the side panniers solution.

 

Technological TFT instrument panel

The Multistrada V4 is fitted with 5” TFT display with optimal resolution and perfect readability in any light conditions. The easy-to-read graphics feature a round digital tachometer which displays gear number and further useful information, such as fuel gauge, temperature and engine temperature while the panels display the levels of the electronic controls and other information. Navigation through the menu proves to be easy thanks to a graphic layout that immediately detects the setting the rider is going to modify. In addition, the user can access the Ducati Multimedia System (DMS) via Bluetooth, to manage incoming/outgoing calls and listen to music tracks.

The Multistrada V4 S, instead, stands out for its 6.5” TFT dashboard. Made of mineral glass, the same material used on modern smartphones, it achieves a dual purpose: improving visibility even in direct sunlight and reducing reflections. It displays additional information, such as suspension settings and, via Sygic GPS navigation app, also provides the navigation system map. This is thanks to the phone’s “mirroring” function, which offers the opportunity to check the phone book, answer incoming calls more easily as well as listening to some music. The brand-new left switchgear allows even easier and quicker menu navigation. Riding Modes can be selected thanks to the new “Mode” button while the management of the Adaptive Cruise Control is entrusted to the classic dedicated button to which the + and – buttons are added. These are used to increase or decrease the distance the rider wants to keep from the vehicle in front. Furthermore, the suspension setting is managed by the dedicated button, recognizable by a stylised shock absorber, and the selected mode is then displayed under that of the Riding Mode selected.

To always keep under control and recharge the rider’s smartphone, a stowage area has been obtained over the tank to house a USB port, accessible via a small flap. Additionally, the right side of the dashboard features a further 12V power socket.

 

Hands Free ignition

The Multistrada V4 uses a Hands-Free starting system that guarantees the best safety standards. Thanks to this system the rider can easily keep the key in his pocket and start the engine with the dedicated button positioned immediately behind the steering plate. The motorcycle can recognize the key, thus allowing the unlocking of the steering lock (activated by an electric actuator) and starting the engine. To open the tank, use the mechanical “flip” key integrated in the same transponder that hosts the electronic key. The fuel tank cap, of the keyless type, is instead available as an option.

 

Riding Mode Sport

The best on road performing Sport Riding Mode provides a thrilling 170 hp together with a sporty suspension setup (S version only). Sport Mode is also characterised by low levels of Ducati Traction Control and Ducati Wheelie Control, and a level 2 ABS setting, which allows controlled lifting of the rear wheel to maximize braking performance and maintains cornering functionality as well. This RM represents the best choice for pro riders who want to get the most from this unique Multistrada V4.

 

Riding Mode Touring

In Touring Riding Mode Ducati provides the engine’s full 170 hp with a smoother, less direct throttle response. Active safety is enhanced by higher DTC and DWC sensitivity levels. The ABS is set to level 3, perfect for touring; this turns rear-wheel lift detection and Cornering ABS functionality on, while also optimising the front/rear combined braking effect. On the S versions a suspension setup perfect for long-distance rides is selected, ensuring maximum comfort for rider and passenger alike.

 

Riding Mode Urban

In Urban Riding Mode power output is reduced to a maximum of 115 hp, and on the S versions suspension is set for optimum agility in case of frequent urban obstacles with corresponding DSS mapping. DTC and DWC are set to high levels for maximum security. ABS is set to level 3.

 

Riding Mode Enduro

Thanks to the adoption of the 19” wheel, the Multistrada V4 is even more at ease when riding off road. The position of the centre of gravity, the weight distribution and, finally, the ergonomics designed to support even standing riding make the Multistrada V4 an authentic all-terrain motorcycle. Additionally, the Enduro Riding Mode sets engine power to a maximum of 115 hp, with off-road oriented suspension settings and DSS mapping for the S versions. DTC and DWC level settings are lowered and the ABS is set to level 1, suitable for off-road use on low grip surfaces: rear-wheel lift detection is off, Cornering functionality is off and ABS on the rear wheel is disabled.

 

Ducati Traction Control (DTC)

A key part of the Ducati Safety Pack, DTC is a system has been further updated and now integrates data coming from the IMU platform, to efficiently keep under control grip losses and the lean angle. In just a few thousandths of a second with data coming from the sensors, DTC can detect and control rear wheelspin, boosting performance and active safety significantly. The system allows the user to choose between eight different levels. Each one has been programmed to provide a rear wheelspin tolerance that matches progressive levels of riding ability (classified from 1 to 8).

 

Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC)

This system, integrated smoothly with the Ducati Riding Modes, offers eight setting levels. It analyses the attitude of the bike; it detects any front wheel lift and controls torque and power to maximise acceleration in safety.

 

Bosch-Brembo braking system with ABS Cornering system

The Multistrada V4 range features the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP), which includes Brembo braking system with Bosch 10.3ME Cornering ABS, adjustable on three levels. Cornering ABS makes use of the Bosch IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) platform, which communicates in real time data concerning lean angles. All this to optimise front and rear braking power on both wheels even with the bike at considerable lean angles and thus preventing serious injuries. Through interaction with the Riding Modes, the system provides compromise-free solutions whatever the situation or riding conditions.

Thanks to its ABS control processor, the Multistrada V4 makes use of a combined braking system that is optimised for the Urban and Touring Riding Modes but has a lower degree of interaction in Sport Mode where combined braking is less desirable. The combined braking system increases stability by using four pressure detectors to allocate braking power optimally between front and rear.

Designed to improve rear tyre control during hard braking, the rear-wheel lift detection is fully enabled in Urban and Touring Riding Modes, in the Sport mode the ABS is controlled while it is deactivated for use in Enduro mode. ABS can also be applied to the front wheel only, as is the case in Enduro Mode, the aim being to allow rear wheel lock and drift on the dirt. ABS can also be fully disabled from the instrument panel in Enduro Riding Mode, and settings can be saved and recalled at the next Key-On.

The system integrates smoothly with the Ducati Riding Modes and has three available levels. Level 2 ensures equilibrium between front and rear without rear wheel lift detection but with the Cornering function on and calibrated for sports-style riding. Level 3 allows, in Touring and Urban Riding Modes, optimisation of the combined braking action with limited rear wheel lift for maximum safety and performance and with Cornering functionality on and calibrated for maximum safety. Lastly, level 1 maximises off road performance by disabling rear-wheel lift detection and allowing the rear wheel to lock, with ABS being applied only at the front.

The front braking system on the Multistrada V4 features monobloc radially mounted Brembo 4-piston callipers with 32 mm diameter pistons and 2 pads, a radial master cylinder with adjustable levers, and dual 320 mm discs. At the rear, there is a single 265 mm diameter disc gripped by a floating calliper, again by Brembo. This array of components ensures top-level performance within the whole motorsport panorama and represents a renowned Ducati feature. On the Multistrada V4 S the braking system makes full use of 330 mm discs at the front combined with Brembo Stylema monobloc callipers.

 

Vehicle Hold Control (VHC)

The new Ducati Multistrada V4 is offered with the latest generation Bosch 10.3 ME ABS, featuring the Vehicle Hold Control (VHC) system. When activated, VHC holds the vehicle steady by applying rear wheel braking. This provides riders with easier restarts, even in critical situations like on a gradient; this is because it modulates brake pressure during starts, leaving the user free to focus on throttle and clutch control. If the system is unused automatic deactivation occurs after 30 seconds.

 

Radar technology

The Ducati Multistrada V4 is the first production bike in the world to adopt radar technology. Radars are advanced aid systems capable of supporting and making riding more comfortable thanks to the ability to reconstruct the reality surrounding the motorcycle. This technical solution manages two functions: Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind Spot Detection.

The adoption of the two systems is part of the revolution which marks a further level of excellence in terms of comfort and riding assistance, especially on long-distance motorway journeys.

It should be underlined that adaptive intelligent systems are an aid to the vehicle rider’s riding and must always be kept under control or adjusted by the rider. Advanced systems are not autonomous riding systems and therefore do not replace the rider. Always attentive to safety on the road and on the racetrack, Ducati emphasizes that the rider is and remains responsible for riding and must always maintain a prudent behaviour appropriate to the various environmental situations.

 

Adaptive Cruise Control

Front radar is perfectly integrated into the bike, which by means of controlled braking and acceleration automatically adjusts the distance (selectable on four levels) from other vehicles when riding at a speed between 30 and 160 km/h. This car-derived system has been evolved and developed according to the dynamics and ergonomics of a two-wheeled vehicle. In particular, the authority of the system in terms of deceleration and acceleration has been limited to ensure the rider can maintain constant control of the vehicle in any situation. The Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system can be inserted and adjusted using the dedicated buttons located on the left block. Thanks to the DQS Up & Down, the rider can shift up or down without the ACC deactivating during the acceleration and deceleration phases. ACC system allows for more comfortable riding, especially on long motorway journeys.

 

Blind Spot Detection

Rear radar technology, housed under the headlight, can detect and report vehicles approaching in the so-called blind spot, namely the area not visible either directly by the rider or through the rear-view mirror. The BSD (Blind Spot Detection) system monitors this situation thanks to the LEDs positioned on the rear-view mirrors. The BSD system also signals the approaching from behind of vehicles at high speed. In both cases, if the user activates the direction indicator expressing the intention to change lane, the BSD flashes the LED signalling a potentially dangerous condition. Thanks to the dedicated menu, the user can adjust the brightness of the system on three different levels.

 

Frame
Its one-of-a-kind chassis set-up features an aluminium monocoque frame, a real gem within the whole segment. An extremely light and compact structure, which perfectly houses the recently unveiled V4 Granturismo engine. Maximum precision when entering and exiting the curves as well as instant response have been therefore entrusted to 24.5° rake steering geometry. The swing arm has been almost completely redesigned by also adding a lightweight trellis frame. The double-sided swing arm solution not only contributes to provide for both rigidity and lightness but also makes the Multistrada V4 even more efficient.

 

Suspension

The Multistrada 1260 comes with a 50 mm upside-down fork, dedicated cast bottom bracket, fully adjustable for spring preload, compression and rebound. The rear features a Marzocchi monoshock, that connects the swing arm to the frame: it is also adjustable in the spring preload remotely with a hydraulic press and in the hydraulic brakes in rebound and compression. The spring works progressively, therefore providing an outstanding riding comfort even when fully laden.

The Multistrada V4 S, instead, is equipped with semi-active Marzocchi suspensions controlled by the Ducati Skyhook Suspension (DSS) Evolution system. The latter also allows adjustment of the preload and hydraulic brakes in compression and extension of the rear shock absorber. Fine adjustment takes place instantly and is integrated into the Riding Modes or can be personalised via the on-board computer. The semi-active system interfaces with the sensors to “read” riding style as well as road surface conditions and, continuously, adjusting the setting. This means a perfect set-up at whatever conditions, on road and fully loaded as well.

The Multistrada V4 range comes with 170 mm wheel travel front and 180 mm rear, a particularly generous suspension system which combined with the frame layout as well as oil sump shape guarantee an impressive ground clearance of 220 mm. The result? Above average riding comfort, a feature that on the Multistrada V4 S is even better thanks to the DSS EVO which allows the user to adjust the starting setting according to the various load situations. This system also integrates, for the first time, the Autoleveling function. This recognizes the load on the bike and then autonomously adjusts the setting and is offered in addition to the options already available: rider only, rider with luggage, rider with passenger or rider with passenger and luggage. The tyre pressure monitoring system is also available as an accessory for the Multistrada V4.

 

Tyres and rims

The Multistrada V4 and V4 S feature light alloy cast wheels. Both are equipped with 3.00 x 19’’ front wheels and 4.5 x 17’’ rear wheels, mounting a Pirelli SCORPION Trail II 120/70-19” tyre on the front and 170/60-17” on the rear. The Multistrada V4 is also homologated for Pirelli SCORPION Rally and SCORPION STR, 120/70-19” tyre on the front and 170/60-17” on the rear. The Multistrada V4 S are also offered with spoked wheels directly assembled in the factory and are available in the same sizes as the alloy wheels.
