PAPENMEIER & SUZUKI WIN ROUND 1 OF MXW IN ITALY

Team Suzuki Press Office – April 10.

Larissa Papenmeier – 1-3 -1st overall

Larissa Papenmeier won the opening round of the Motocross World Championship of Women in Pietramurata, Italy at the weekend aboard her RM-Z Suzuki.

The Motocross World Championship of Women was held within the MXGP of Pietramurata. More than 50 riders took part in the first race on Saturday afternoon and Papenmeier (Team Twenty Suspension Suzuki) isn’t new to the series, as the 28-year-old was the first winner of the newly-created series in 2008 and ever since has been part of the leading group in this class.

The World Championship of Women celebrates its 10th anniversary this year and Papenmeier was upbeat from the start: In qualifying the German took the third-fastest time and was able to start the first race from a good gate-pick.

Said Papenmeier: “My start wasn’t bad and I was able to get in front very quickly. Towards the end, Kiara Fontanesi put some pressure on me, but at the end it was enough to win it!”

The start of the second race was not as good, but Papenmeier was able to push forward and reach second spot until mid-race where she was able to stay for long enough. Just towards the end of the race, she had to give up to World Champion Fontanesi and was satisfied with third place.

“Third place was sufficient, because I knew it was enough for the Grand Prix win and therefore also to lead the World Championship”, Papenmeier said about her first GP-win since 2010. “I am incredibly happy about this success and want to sincerely thank my sponsors and supporters!”

Another strong performance came from Suzuki riders Anne Borchers (Team stielergruppe.mx Johannes Bikes Suzuki) and Kim Irmgartz (Team Twenty Suspension Suzuki). Borchers had already fought for ninth position in the first race before she fell twice and consequently fell back to 16th. The 26-year-old also started the second race well and finished in 10th place.

Irmgartz fought from 23rd to 15th in the opening race. The second race was not a lucky one though, as after a weak start, she crashed and had to settle with 22nd position at the finish line.

The next race of the Motocross World Championship of Women will take place at the next MXGP on April 15th in Agueda, Portugal.
