Lotte van Drunen Overcomes Adversity to Secure 10th Overall in Germany

De Baets Yamaha Supported MX Team’s Lotte van Drunen has endured a tough second round of the WMX World Championship to place 10th overall in Germany. A small fall while leading Race One resulted in the defending champion slipping to fourth at the finish, while in the second race, a spectacular crash and charge through the field rewarded her with 18th. The EMX250 series resumed for its fifth round where VHR Yamaha Official EMX250 Team’s Jarne Bervoets claimed 13th overall.

One week on from a promising start to her WMX world title defence in France, van Drunen headed to Teutschenthal in Germany for the second of five rounds. The Dutch ace was clearly feeling comfortable on the technical circuit and posted the fourth-fastest time in qualifying.

The opening race began with van Drunen comfortably inside the top five and focused on the riders ahead of her. As the race neared its conclusion, she had worked her way into the lead before an uncharacteristic mistake resulted in a small fall. The Dutch rider quickly remounted and chased the leaders to the finish, crossing the line in fourth.

Another excellent start in Race Two set van Drunen up for a potential place on the overall podium. However, she tangled mid-air with another rider on the opening lap, which resulted in a sizable crash. Fortunate to escape serious injury, the 18-year-old rejoined the race well behind the field and she clawed her way up the leaderboard to 18th at the finish. On the day, van Drunen claimed 10th overall and now sits ninth in the WMX World Championship standings.

Other Yamaha-mounted riders who performed well in Germany included Shana van der Vlist who placed an impressive third overall while Amandine Verstappen finished sixth.

In the EMX250 class, Bervoets returned to racing aboard his GYTR-kitted YZ250F after a mixed start to the campaign. After qualifying as the 10th fastest rider in his group, the Belgian was enjoying a solid opening race until a technical issue ended his efforts prematurely.

Rain before and during Race Two made the circuit conditions incredibly tough. Undeterred by the challenge, Bervoets started just inside the top 20 and then delivered his best ride of the season. By race end, he’d climbed to seventh to post a career-best result, and he now sits 27th in the series with seven rounds remaining.

Brazilian racer Bernardo Tiburcio impressed again in Germany, placing fifth overall and he now lies seventh in the championship.

Bervoets’ teammate Mano Faure was absent from racing in Germany as he continues to recover after suffering a broken leg at round three in Italy.

The WMX calendar will now take a short break before resuming in Great Britain over the weekend of July 18-19, while the EMX250 series continues next weekend in Kegums, Latvia.
