Walker finishes fourth despite being under the weather

Jhak Walker had a tough start to the season in Sumter, fighting a nasty illness that kept him in bed all Saturday. The track was classic South Carolina—deep sand, tight trees, and rough trails that require total focus. Even though he felt worse on Sunday morning, Jhak still lined up to give it his best shot. He quickly realized he physically could not keep up with the fast pace in the tight woods, making it dangerous to push too hard. To stay safe and make sure he finished the race, he backed off his speed and rode a smart, manageable pace. While it wasn’t the result he wanted, Jhak showed a lot of heart just getting through the day, and he’s now focused on getting healthy and showing what he’s really capable of at the first GNCC.

“I came into the weekend under the weather, not sure how bad it would be racing, but all day Saturday, I laid in bed doing whatever I could to get my body back to normal. Unfortunately, I woke up Sunday morning feeling even worse, so I knew it was going to be a hard day and that I needed to do my best. Once the racing started, I felt off immediately. My eyes and brain could not keep up, and it was getting dangerous, so I’d taper back to a comfortable, manageable pace, lowering the chances of getting injured as I just wanted to finish. I felt like that every single test all day, which did not put me anywhere where I should be but I know I tried my best and I have much more to prove. Working on getting my body back to 100% before the first GNCC.”
