Arenas Claims Home Pole at Aragon by 0.015 Seconds

WorldSSP championship leader Albert Arenas will start Race 1 at his home round at MotorLand Aragón from pole position after narrowly securing top spot in Superpole by just 0.015 seconds.

After finishing ninth in Friday’s Free Practice, Arenas and the AS BLU CRU Racing team made strong improvements in the hotter conditions of Superpole, with the Spaniard delivering a lap of 1’53.142 to secure pole position.

Roberto García (GMT94 Yamaha) looked set to claim a career-first pole position before being denied in the closing moments of the session, as Arenas and Valentin Debise both improved to edge him back to third under the scorching Aragón sun.

It proved a difficult session for Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing’s Can Öncü, who crashed in the early stages of Superpole. Fortunately, the Turkish rider was able to return to the track after repairs, recovering to secure 13th on the grid for tomorrow’s opening race.

Aldi Mahendra will line up eighth on the second AS BLU CRU Racing R9, in the middle of the third row.

Lucas Mahias (GMT94 Yamaha) showed strong pace in Friday morning practice, finishing second fastest, but a crash midway through the Superpole session ruled him out of contention for a front-row start. The Frenchman will line up 19th on the grid.

Yuki Okamoto will start 26th on the second Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing Yamaha R9.
Race 1 of the weekend gets underway at 12:30 local time.

Albert Arenas (AS BLU CRU Racing) – Pole Position (1’53.142)
“It was a good Friday for us. It has been a very hot day today, especially in Superpole but I felt good on the bike early on. I started to work well, I was focusing more on used tyre pace for the race. In Superpole, all of our ideas from the morning changed with the track so hot, but we managed to make some changes and I altered my riding style to cope with this. The team worked really hard, especially after Most as the crash was big there, but it’s been working well from the start today so thanks to them. In the heat, it will be a long race physically but it’s the same for everyone – we will give it our best to be on the podium and continue our strong season.”
