The opening day of action in the FIM World Supersport Championship at Circuito Estoril saw Can Öncü storm to pole position ahead of Race 1 on Saturday.

The Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros Racing rider clocked a fastest lap of 1’39.608 aboard the Yamaha R9 to clinch the top spot on tomorrow’s grid by 0.269 seconds.

Teammate and championship rookie Alberto Surra, stepping in for injured Aldi Mahendra, will be lining up in second alongside Öncü on the front row, producing an impressive effort in the opening day of action to clock a fastest lap of 1’39.877 and delivering a 1-2 finish for the Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros Racing team.

After a strong Friday at Circuito Estoril, GMT94-Yamaha rider, Lucas Mahias will go from the second row having set a fastest time of 1’40.169, with teammate Roberto Garcia lining up further back in 11th on the #37 R9.

It was a challenging opening day at Circuito Estoril for Stefano Manzi, who struggled to find a setting to line up in 13th on tomorrow’s grid with the Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing squad.

Tomorrow’s charge to the chequered flag provides the Italian with another opportunity to seal the 2025 World Supersport title.

If the #62 R9 rider, who holds the top spot in the standings by a margin of 60 points, ends tomorrow’s race with a lead of 75 points or higher over Yamaha counterpart Öncü, he will be crowned the 2025 FIM World Supersport Champion.

Further downfield after a challenging day on Portuguese soil, Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing rider, Yuki Okamoto, who capped off the day with a 28th place finish in Superpole.

Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros Racing Team

“I’m really happy with today’s performance and feel motivated heading into tomorrow. Me and the team are doing a good job and have grown in confidence as the day went on. We need to work on a couple of things tonight in order to improve the feeling for tomorrow’s race, but as a whole, we’re in a strong position and I feel really happy. I’m looking forward to going racing tomorrow. I have no doubt that Manzi will be strong, but today, we put ourselves in the best position possible to be competitive.”
