Levi Townley Secures Maiden EMX125 Overall Podium Result with Second in Latvia

MJC Yamaha Official EMX125 Team’s Levi Townley has finished as runner-up at round six of the EMX125 Championship in Kegums, Latvia. Delivering improving results of fourth in Race One and a career-best second in Race Two, the talented youngster secured the first overall podium result of his career. Rounding out an incredibly positive weekend of racing for the team, Sleny Goyer placed fifth overall to maintain third in the series standings.

Two weeks on from his impressive return to racing in France where he placed fifth overall, Townley was fired up to once again run at the front of the hotly contested EMX125 field. Adapting quickly to the fast and sandy Kegums circuit, the GYTR-kitted YZ125 rider posted the third-fastest time in his qualifying group, which gave him a favourable gate pick for both races.

With the track conditions deep and technical for Race One, a strong start was important, and Townley rounded the first turn in second place. A few laps later, the New Zealander slipped to fourth, but by this time he’d built a comfortable margin over the riders behind him. Townley then rode a composed and controlled race to cross the finish line in fourth, one place ahead of teammate Goyer in fifth.

For Race Two, the sun was shining and the circuit was much drier. Once again, Townley started in second with series leader Moritz Ernecker in front of him. For the entire race, the duo broke away from the chasing pack and Townley secured a career-best second-place finish. The strong performance rewarded the 16-year-old with a maiden overall podium result, with his points haul moving him from 20th to 14th in the series standings.

Goyer was also impressive in Latvia. In Race One, the Frenchman was forced to work his way to the front after starting outside the top 10, and he eventually crossed the line in fifth. A much better start in Race Two set him up for another solid result, however, with the drier and smoother track offering fewer passing opportunities, he could only reach sixth at the finish. On the day, Goyer placed fifth overall and remains third in the championship with four rounds remaining.

VHR Yamaha Official EMX250 Team’s Jarne Bervoets was also in action in Latvia for round six of the series. The Belgian carried his form from last weekend’s round in Germany to place 10th in the opening race of the weekend. In Race Two, Bervoets was involved in a first turn fall and, despite a determined charge through the field in search of points, he just missed out with his 21st place finish. The 17-year-old placed 18th overall in Latvia, and he moves up to 24th in the series standings.

JK Racing Yamaha’s Jekabs Kubulins enjoyed a strong home race in Latvia to place fifth overall, with his Race Two holeshot and third place finish underlining his ability.

Following a successful weekend of racing, the MJC Yamaha Official EMX125 Team returns to action in Portugal at the end of June, while the EMX250 series continues in two weeks’ time in Italy.
