Introduction of: SRAD (Suzuki Ram Air Direct)

Air intakes at the front that force air directly into the airbox. All models after 1996 have employed this design.

This is the turning-point model of the GSX-R750 with the newly equipped twin-spar frame instead of the double cradle frame. The engine was also completely redesigned employing 3-piece crankcases, chrome-plated cylinder and a side cam chain as well as Suzuki Ram Air Direct (SARD) system. Faithfully tracing the GP machine RGV-G, the basic dimensions with shortened wheelbase generated smooth drivability with a surprising dry weight of 179kg.

The Suzuki GSX-R750 was back to where it was meant to be, first place.

This year’s model finally addressed the weight and minor handling problems that had plagued the GSX-R through the first half of the 90s. Featuring a new twin-spar frame derived from Suzuki’s RGV 500 GP racer. A new compact and lightweight new short stroke (72 x 46 mm) 25 degrees forward tilted engine incorporated magnesium covers on the cylinder head, starter motor and clutch cover to aid weight reduction resulted in a decrease in weight by 20 kg to 179 kg, and horsepower increase to a 118 bhp (88 kW).

New to the GSX-R760 range was SCEM (Silicon Carbide Electro-Plate) on the cylinders to reduce cylinder pitch and use of straight ports and the new SRAD (Suzuki Ram Air Direct) induction and electronically controlled BDSR 39mm carburetors.

The wheelbase was also shortened to 1400 mm and the new very rigid 24° caster aluminium twin-spar frame (instead of double craddle) was introduced. Other features included electronically controlled carburetors and 43 mm inverted forks which were fully adjustable. Also 17in rear rim was fitted as standard with a 190/50-17 size tire. (Found on all model from 1996 to 1999).

Minor internal tweaks on the 1996 model and improved aerodynamics with a RGV-T inspired slanted nose overhanging over the front tire and the rounded contours of the large detachable single seat tail cowl.

High power, reliability and the compact and light weight features of the engine and the chassis enabled the riders on the GSX-R750 to shine on the track and the street. The 1997 Suzuki GSX-R750 had the handling of a 400cc chassis but with 750cc acceleration.

Introduction of electronic fuel injection. Gain in power to 135 bhp.

Electronic fuel injection (FI) appeared for the first time on a Suzuki GSX-R with large 46 mm throttle bodies with a steering damper as standard, a 5mm shorter wheelbase, changed internal and external gear ratios, altered chassis, improved suspension and brakes, internal engine tweaks and larger airbox.

With a two-stage system monitoring water and intake air temperatures, environmental and intake air pressures, throttle position and engine rpm to optimal air/fuel mix for both low and high rpm situations Suzuki made a class-leading sportsbike even better. CDI ignition coil was adopted and internal engine parts saw further weight reduction and the camshaft position use of close ratio gearbox and strengthening of rear shock mount.
