Sacha Coenen unstoppable for MX2 victory at Trentino MXGP

The Grand Prix of Trentino, in northern Italy, was the scene for the latest successful result for Red Bull KTM in the 2026 MXGP FIM Motocross World Championship as Sacha Coenen provided the reference in the MX2 class with his KTM 250 SX-F.

Highlights and key moments from Pietramurata:

After just five rounds Red Bull KTM have now won Grands Prix with three of their four riders as Sacha Coenen celebrates his first triumph of the season by easing to 1-1 results at Trentino
Saturday becomes another ‘Coenen Crush’ as both Lucas and Sacha win their Qualification Heats without opposition for the second time this year. Sacha is undefeated in MX2 on Saturday for 50 points from 50 so far in 2026
Lucas Coenen and Simon Laengenfelder both miss the podium in Italy but still lead the MXGP and MX2 world championships respectively

The hardpacked, tight and stony ‘Ciclamino’ racetrack north of Lake Garda has provided MXGP with one of its most idyllic settings for more than ten years. Italian fans have repeatedly filled the spectator pockets of the compact venue to create an atmospheric and noisy date on the world championship calendar. Round five of the current campaign took place in warm and bright weather on Saturday and with changeable skies and showers on Sunday.

Lucas Coenen rode to victory on Saturday to consolidate his hold on the red plate. The Belgian had P1 pick on Sunday but a crash on the first lap of the opening moto of the day left him needing to pick a route through the pack. Lucas made it from 26th to 12th by the end of the 30 minutes and 2 laps. In the second race he started better, moved to the lead for seven laps but a slip dropped him to third and he crossed the line in that position, for 7th overall. Lucas still heads the MXGP standings by 4 points.

Andrea Adamo was P3 on Saturday and equaled his personal best so far in his rookie season. The Italian, cheered by a large section of home support, started in the top five for the first moto and kept consistent with his pace for 6th. Later in the afternoon he misjudged his start, fell but recovered to 13th and classified for 11th on the day.

Sacha Coenen controlled his Qualification Heat for the fifth time in a row this term. The Belgian then led every lap of the first moto across muddy, slick and rutted terrain. The checkered flag was his second of the season. In the second race Coenen replicated his holeshot performance and was undisturbed as he built a ten second margin at the front. Despite a late tip-off, Sacha completed his scorecard and has drawn to within 4 points of his teammate and the MX2 red plate.

World champion Simon Laengenfelder grabbed 8 points for P3 in Saturday’s qualifying race. The German then didn’t start strongly in the first moto and had a busy scrap for P10. Simon improved his prospects at the second time of asking and worked his way to P3 for 6th overall on the day; the first time this season Laengenfelder has missed a podium celebration but he continues to top the MX2 table.

Moritz Ernecker took another dominant triumph in EXM125 with his KTM 125 SX. The Austrian went 1-1 in Trentino and heads the championship with a 50%-win rate from the eight motos to-date. Teammate Ricardo Bauer also made the podium in 3rd.

The 2026 MXGP agenda now enters an extended break. The Grand Prix of France at LaCapelle Marival will restart the series on May 23-24.

Lucas Coenen, 12th and 3rd for 7th overall in MXGP: “Overall I’m happy that I’m healthy and fit. I didn’t have high expectations for this track because it’s not really [suited to] my style. Two crashes in the first moto and I had to pass a lot of people. In the second I tried to settle in and keep cool but paid for that little mistake. At least I had good pace, so I have to be happy and look forward.”

Andrea Adamo, 6th and 13th for 11th overall in MXGP: “Two completely different motos today. I had a good start in the first one and managed to stay in my position. I made a couple of little mistakes and had some arm-pump but I had the feeling I was riding good and my speed was good. There was not much difference to the front guys. I missed my start process for the second moto. I wasn’t quite ‘ready’ and I went a little too late. Bad start. I managed to recover well to P10 and did my best but had a crash and lost those few positions. My pace was good again and I caught back up to the edge of the top ten. This year MXGP is really tight, and the start is so important: we see that with other riders when they cannot make it. This is all experience that we’ll put in the pocket. We’ll learn and try to correct for the next races.”

Sacha Coenen, 1st and 1st for 1st overall in MX2: “I’m really happy to win three motos this weekend and for the first time. I had the holeshot in the first moto, made a lead and was able to cruise until the end. Really good. In the second one I was feeling better and had an even better flow. I led every lap until three to go when I made a big mistake and crashed: I hate that corner! Anyway, I was able to pick up and manage the race to win again.”

Simon Laengenfelder, 10th and 3rd for 6th overall in MX2: “I started to feel a bit better in the second race. We had been making changes, and I had been struggling to get a good feeling and to push; I had to push anyway to get 3rd at the end! Some weekends are better, some are worse and I was ‘off’ today.”
