Media Release:
REDEFINING HIGH PERFORMANCE IN THE MIDDLEWEIGHT SPORTS CLASS
The middleweight sports class has a huge following throughout, and to satisfy the growing demand for versatile, high-performance all-rounders, Yamaha announce the introduction of the all-new FZ6 Fazer for 2004.
The next generation middleweight contender is totally new, and virtually the only feature this exciting new 600 shares with its highly successful predecessor is the Fazer
THE FZS600 FAZER SUCCESS STORY
Right from the very start the original FZS600 Fazer proved to be an outstanding success story for Yamaha. Shown for the first time at the Paris Show in late 1997, this truly versatile middleweight offered a winning blend of performance, style, easy handling and economy.
Powered by a Yamaha Thundercat-based engine housed in a double cradle steel frame, the original FZS600 Fazer attracted a wide spectrum of riders who were looking for an exciting middleweight machine with a distinctive and original character that would deliver the goods whether they were sports riding, touring or commuting.
BEST SELLING MACHINE IN ITS CATEGORY
Motorcyclists from a wide variety of backgrounds liked what this machine had to offer, and in 1999 the FZS600 Fazer became the top-selling model in its class. In fact, since its debut, this remarkable middleweight has consistently been one of the top selling models in the important street category, making it one of Yamahas most successful motorcycles in the European marketplace.
The enormous and enduring success of the FZS600 Fazer can be attributed to the fact that its formula of real world usability combined with a sporty specification were totally in tune with our customers demands and expectations right from the start. With this in mind, Yamaha set out to develop a new generation Fazer that would build on these strengths, whilst at the same time offering todays riders even higher levels of engine and chassis performance combined with reduced weight, increased versatility and more sophisticated styling.
Next generation FZ6 Fazer: key development goals
Five key goals were identified at the very beginning of the project to develop the next generation FZ6 Fazer.
Goal 1: Higherlevels of engine performance than the existing model, whilst also offering stronger low to mid-range acceleration, together with smoother, free-revving performance at higher engine speeds.
Goal 2: Lighter cornering performance for more exciting and enjoyable handling performance on fast, twisty roads.
Goal 3: Easier manoeuvrability and more agile handling around town and in traffic jams.
Goal 4: More distinctive and emotive cutting-edge styling together with a higher-quality appearance.
Goal 5: Exceed EU-2 emissions standards by a large margin.
High-performance R6-based 600 cc engine
600 cc LIQUID-COOLED IN-LINE FOUR CYLINDER ENGINE
Powering the next generation Fazer is a 600 cc liquid-cooled in-line four cylinder engine that is virtually identical to the powerplant used on the R6 supersport machine.
For class-leading mid-range acceleration and smooth top-end performance, the Fazer runs with the same forged pistons, combustion chamber shape, crankshaft, valves and bore and stroke as used on the R6. The only significant differences are newly designed cast camshafts which use the same profile as the current Fazer, different intake valve springs, and reshaped intake ducts which have been specially developed to deliver an easy to use engine character for enhanced rideability.
ALL-NEW GROUP INJECTION TYPE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM
The new Fazer is the first ever Yamaha motorcycle to be fitted with an innovative and compact new group injection type fuel injection system which features two pairs of 36 mm bore throttle bodies. Fuel is delivered to the cylinder heads via 4-jet/2-direction spray-type injectors which have a high dynamic range, giving smooth and efficient engine performance.
Another significant feature that makes the new generation Fazer ideally suited to a wide range of conditions from stop/start urban riding through to fast motorway cruising is the 32-bit CPU. This compact processor ensures absolutely precise ignition timing and accurate injection control which makes for linear engine power characteristics across the Fazers wide operating range. Finally, low to mid-range throttle control is enhanced by the use of an eccentric throttle pulley that gives a progressive, rider-friendly action.
DOWNDRAFT INTAKE AND OPTIMISED AIR CLEANER DUCT DESIGN
To match the new highly efficient fuel injection system the Fazer is fitted with a downdraft intake system. Breathing through a 6.3 litre airbox, the single body intake funnel ensures optimal throttle response and makes for strong torque output in the important low to mid-speed range.
Yamahas engineers have also gone to great lengths to ensure that the Fazer sounds as good as it performs! Using acoustics analysis technology, they have been able to optimise the air cleaner duct design so that it emits a pleasing intake sound that is actually harmonised with the tone of the new exhaust!
R6 TYPE SLEEVELESS DIRECT-PLATED CYLINDER
The new Fazer benefits from R6 type cylinders which have been directly plated with a ceramic composite. Unlike the previous Fazer which featured a plated liner, this liner-less system gives superior heat dissipation characteristics, and offers finer tolerances as well as increased rigidity. Together with the use of forged pistons and specially designed piston rings, the direct plated cylinder gives a more stable gas seal, reduces friction and gives excellent oil consumption characteristics.
This direct plating system has been made possible by Yamahas latest die-casting technology, in which aluminium is cast under strictly controlled conditions. By significantly reducing the quantity of oxides in the crystal matrix formed when aluminium is cast, this sophisticated technology ensures a stronger and more uniform surface area on the Fazers cylinder block, which makes direct plating possible.
HIGH-EFFICIENCY 4-INTO-2-INTO-1 UP-MUFFLER
As well as being the first Yamaha to be equipped with the new group injection type fuel injection system, the next generation FZ6 Fazer is also the first Yamaha sport motorcycle to feature a 4-into-2-into-1 up-muffler exhaust assembly.
This beautifully styled system gives the machine a unique and impressive look, and in addition to its special aesthetic appeal it offers a number of performance-related benefits and practical advantages. Pipe lengths and silencer chamber size have been optimised in order to ensure high levels of engine efficiency, and for a throaty pulse effect there is a connecting pipe between the number two and number three header pipes.
One practical advantage of this design is that the honeycomb catalytic converter is situated in the vertical section of the exhaust system behind the engine, and is therefore well away from the road surface.
Situated beneath the seat cowl, the wide and shallow muffler box features twin exit pipes protected by a lightweight resin cover that underlines the new Fazers individual character.
AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM AND METAL HONEYCOMB CATALYSER
The new fuel-injected Fazer greatly exceeds EU-2 emission standards, and this has been achieved through the adoption of an air induction system on the intake side, and by a metal honeycomb catalyser on the exhaust side.
If any unburned fuel is picked up by sensors in the exhaust, the lightweight and compact Yamaha Air Induction System introduces fresh air directly into the exhaust port to re-burn the fuel.
Exhaust gases are then cleaned again by a catalytic converter equipped with a metal honeycomb coated with titanium and rhodium, and protected by a stainless steel box.
The efficiency of the Air Induction System and honeycomb catalyser is demonstrated by the fact that the new Fazers emissions are less than half of the levels set by the new EU-2 standards, making this class-leading 600 one of the most environmentally responsible in the category.

All-new lightweight die-cast aluminium frame
LIGHTER, MORE AGILE AND BETTER LOOKING!
Yamahas design team set out to develop an all new chassis that would satisfy three main criteria. Firstly, the new chassis would need to deliver lighter cornering performance for more enjoyable and rewarding riding on twisty roads. Secondly, the new chassis should offer agile handling through city streets and in traffic jams.
Thirdly, the new design needed to have a dramatic and attractive appearance that would live up to its class-leading performance.
THE FIRST ALUMINIUM DIE-CAST FRAME IN THE CLASS
In order to be able to achieve these three main targets, Yamahas development team have designed an all-new aluminium die-cast frame, making the FZ6 Fazer the first production motorcycle in the category to benefit from this advanced technology.
Yamahas exclusive CF Die-Cast Technology was used in 2003 for the manufacture of the R6 subframe and swingarm, and the Fazer is the first Yamaha to utilise this system for its main frame.
BENEFITS OF CF DIE-CAST TECHNOLOGY
This new CF Die-Cast Technology differs from conventional casting processes in three main areas. Firstly, the vacuum in the mould is six times more complete with the Yamaha system. Secondly, the temperature of the molten aluminium remains more stable during the casting process. Thirdly, the aluminium is injected into the mould five times faster for more efficient mould filling, which ensures that the quantity of oxidised impurities is reduced by up to 80% for a much stronger structure.
The new lightweight die-cast aluminium frame gives an excellent balance of strength and rigidity, and the use of CF Die-Cast Technology has also given our designers the freedom to create a beautifully sculpted form that emphasises the Fazers unique appearance and exceptional beauty.
GROUND BREAKING WELD-FREE FRAME DESIGN
Another advantage of Yamahas advanced casting system is that it greatly simplifies the structure of the frame, and eliminates the need for welds. The Fazer main frame is actually made up of only two parts a right side and a left side and these are bolted together at the head pipe assembly at the front and at the swingarm pivot point at the rear.
ASYMMETRICAL FIVE-POINT ENGINE MOUNTING
The compact R6-based engine is mounted rigidly at five points as a fully stressed member, and this asymmetrical system utilises four points on the left and right sides of the crankcase, and one point on the left side of the cylinder head.
The high levels of rigidity offered by the new die-cast frame and asymmetrically mounted engine have allowed for the elimination of traditional frame cross members, which not only reduces weight, but also facilitates maintenance during routine servicing.
ANOTHER FIRST FOR THE FZ6 FAZER!
Together with its high-efficiency 4-into-2-into-1 up-muffler and new group injection type fuel injection system, the use of a die-cast aluminium frame is yet another first for the radical new FZ6 Fazer.
As well as weighing in at approximately 7 kg less than the existing Fazer frame, this new highly rigid two-piece structure breaks new ground by being totally weld-free, whilst its beautifully sculpted lines demonstrate that form and function can work hand in hand.
TOTALLY REVISED CHASSIS DIMENSIONS
The new chassis runs with totally new dimensions which have been chosen to give this new class-leader outstanding handling performance through twisty back roads, as well as a light and easy character in congested urban conditions. Wheelbase has been extended by 23 mm to 1440 mm, whilst the caster angle in increased by 1 degree to 25 degrees, and trail has been lengthened by nearly 9 mm to 97.5 mm.
NEW EXTRA-LONG ALUMINIUM SWINGARM
In addition to its revised overall chassis dimensions and geometry, the FZ6 Fazer also benefits from a new extra-long box-section aluminium swingarm which, at 590 mm, is over 70 mm longer than on the existing model. By moving the swingarm pivot point much closer to the axis of the drive sprocket, the drive chain runs at a more consistent tension for outstanding running stability.
Mounted directly to the highly rigid swingarm is a lightweight preload-adjustable shock absorber featuring optimised valve settings that deliver progressive damping characteristics and for improved all-round versatility, rear wheel travel is increased by 10 mm to 130 mm.
REPOSITIONED CRANK AXIS
Compared with its predecessor, the new FZ6 Fazers crank axis is positioned 10 mm further back and 5 mm higher in the chassis, and this shifts the centre of gravity closer to the new models roll axis. This new engine position, combined with the new chassis dimensions, gives a whole new feeling of rider-machine unity that makes this new middleweight such a rewarding machine to ride in a diverse range of road conditions.
51%/49% FRONT/REAR WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION
In order to achieve the idealised front/rear weight distribution of 51%/49%, our design team have relocated the battery nearer the front and beneath the fuel tank, whilst a new seat design gives a riders hip position 8 mm further forward.
FAZER 1000-STYLE 43 mm FRONT FORKS
All-new Fazer 1000-style front forks runs with larger diameter 43 mm inner tubes, and the pitch is increased by 20 mm to 210 mm to accommodate the new tubes and a wider front tyre.
A new one-piece cast aluminium upper triple clamp incorporates the handlebar crown, whilst the new lower triple clamp is of a forged steel construction.
This new front end gives 130 mm wheel travel, and combined with the 51% front weight bias, the new larger diameter forks make for a greatly improved sense of rigidity, and transmit accurate feedback from the road surface. The result is that the new FZ6 Fazer has an easy, natural handling character that works in harmony with the rider to make them feel at one with the machine in a very short period of time.
OUTSTANDING REAR WHEEL DRIVE FORCE
Rear wheel drive force is the complex relationship between torque, gear ratio and tyre diameter, and it is a crucial factor in determining the character of every motorcycle. Yamahas engineers have focused closely on this area in an effort to give the new FZ6 Fazer exhilarating cornering performance, particularly in the important 70-110 km/h speed range.
By carefully selecting torque values that complement different gear ratios over a wide rpm range, and equipping the new Fazer with much wider rear tyre, we have succeeded in boosting rear wheel drive force by a full 10%.
R6-TYPE WHEELS RUNNING WIDER RUBBER
To match the requirements of the all-new chassis and higher powered R6 based engine, the 2004 FZ6 Fazer is equipped with new wheels and tyres.
Manufactured using a special 4-directional mould that achieves an optimal balance of strength, weight and rigidity, the new wheels are similar to those featured on the R6, and are 18% lighter than those fitted to the existing Fazer! Wheel width is increased to 5.50 at the rear and 3.50 at the front allowing the use of a massive 180/55- ZR17 rear tyre and 120/70-ZR17 front tyre.
The reduced unsprung weight and increased tyre width takes the FZ6 Fazers handling and cornering performance into another league, and underlines this new machines position as one of the highest specification middleweight all-rounders.
DUAL 298 mm FRONT DISCS
Slowing the new Fazer is a high-performance braking system featuring dual large-diameter 298 mm front discs gripped by highly efficient pads, whilst the rear braking is handled by a 245 mm diameter disc and R6-type Nissin caliper which is now positioned above the swingarm.
70° LOCK-TO-LOCK TURNING ANGLE
All-round versatility is a key factor in the success of the original Fazer, and every effort has been made to ensure that the new models performance exceeds that of its predecessor in every area.
Recognising that easy manoeuvrability in congested city streets is vital, our designers have optimised the shape of the fuel tank, cowling and other components. By freeing up extra space around the triple clamps, the Fazer now offers a full 70° of steering for a smaller turning circle and more agile low speed handling in traffic.
SOPHISTICATED NEW LCD METER PANEL
The new meter panel illustrates the care and attention to detail that has
gone into the development of this next generation Fazer. The single-unit meter
panel features an easy to read two colour design with backlighting to give
a high quality 3D effect.
A bar-type tachometer features a white background, and positioned within the centre of the circular curve of the tachometer display is the digital LCD speedometer on a blue background.
As well as the attractive new tachometer and speedometer, the meter panel also includes an odometer, twin trip meters, a full-time display clock, bar-type fuel level and water temperature displays, as well as intake air temperature and fuel trip meters.
EFFECTIVE WINDSCREEN WITH AERODYNAMIC TWIN HEADLIGHT COWL
The new wider windscreen is designed to offer good wind protection whilst at the same time minimising turbulence and wind noise, and is designed to give a good balance of rider comfort and aerodynamic efficiency. Riders who use their machine all year round and for long journeys can fit an optional high windscreen which is 90 mm taller than the standard screen.
The aerodynamic front upper cowling is all-new, and features powerful twin headlights that give the new FZ6 Fazer a more extreme image and for reduced turbulence the cowls side panels run with large vents that allow air to flow through smoothly.
ERGONOMIC ALLOY FUEL TANK
Yamahas engineers have used a unique CAD software programme to develop the new fuel tank, and this new system has made it possible to produce a lightweight design whose overall shape offers the ideal balance of shape, weight and strength. In particular, this new design has allowed for an increase in the steering angle to 70°, and has also facilitated the fitment of a downdraft type fuel injection system.
Manufactured from low carbon alloy containing titanium, this 19-litre fuel tank offers excellent rider knee grip, and its high quality appearance serves to emphasise the impressive specification of this new middleweight contender.
DYNAMIC AND LIGHTWEIGHT FEEL
The combination of the new die-cast frame, new shape cowl, specially shaped fuel tank and new 5-spoke wheels gives the new FZ6 Fazer a truly dynamic new look that blends the aggressive image of a sports bike with the user-friendliness of an all-rounder.

COMMENTS FROM THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT STAFF
In the design, we decided first to focus on three main points. One was a modern exterior that would look when seen around town, the second was a form that would give a feeling of riding-ease, and the third was an Italian taste type of styling that would succeed in the naked-like context.
With these points in mind, we came up with group and connect as our basic key words. This phrase meant getting rid of the image of the existing model, in which the cowling, seat, fuel tank, tyres and so on, had all existed with the same sense of volume, and replacing it with the concept of a mass at the centre of the vehicle, which would then be surrounded by the other parts. In considering the body as a whole, priority would be placed on this mass, while the other parts would be grouped around it, and these groups would in turn be connected. The sense of modulation created between a large centre and its smaller surrounding elements helped produce a body with a strong feeling of 3-dimensionality. If the existing Fazer was considered to be of an average form, this new model can be said to have a highly prioritised 3-D shape. That is to say, it has a deeply sculpted form.
Next came the element of compactness. This is also an element that suggests a machine that is easy to ride. This is a perspective that particularly strives to remove any imposing image from the knee area where the rider actually touches the bike when riding and the other places with which there is prominent visual contact.
In addition to this, we have also taken into consideration the element of honesty. Basically, we thought of showing a smaller number of elements. Due to the technological advances in todays increasingly high performance motorcycles, the trend has been toward an increase the number of elements involved in the designs.
However, in this model, we tried to decrease in the number of such elements and find a positive sense of modulation within that smaller number of elements.
As a fourth point, we added the idea of a sporty look. Of course, the look we were aiming for is not like that of the R1, but a sportiness within the context of an allrounder bike that will take you anywhere. We accentuated the parts that give a sense of riding, such as the engine, tyres and frame.
The same can be said of the cowling. Whilst the cowling for the R1 is designed with the image of slicing through the wind, with the new Fazer we sought a design that gives the image of taking the wind head-on and pushing it aside. Another way of saying it is that we tried to create the feeling of a machine that attacks the air.
Another thing we tried to do was create a design that succeeded with the cowling on, and also as a naked bike with the cowling removed. Since the focus of such a design inevitably became the form at the point where the cowling and fuel tank meet, we paid special attention to this area. The adoption of Yamahas CF Die-Cast Technology in the manufacture of the main frame components also gave us greater freedom to design a truly original frame. Here again we made an effort to reflect our group and connect design concept.
COMMENTS FROM THE RIDING TEST STAFF
Since this is a full model change of the existing Fazer, we werent necessarily starting from scratch. We focused on how we could achieve a sporty ride using an engine developed directly from that of the YZF-R6, whilst still retaining the strengths of the existing model.
We built up our primary image of this new Fazer, based on input from users of the current model. We journeyed to secondary roads in Italy, France and Germany to see for ourselves the actual conditions the model is used in, and listened to the actual voices of the users. From all this, we tried to isolate the essential elements that would be necessary to build a next generation middleweight sport bike that surpasses the expectations of consumers. What we came up with was a bike character that would be fast when the rider relaxes and leans with the bike through the curves on winding roads. We believed that the next-generation Fazer should be a bike that is fast not only when you rev the engine, but also fast when you go through the curves without using the engine, and we worked on each of the parts accordingly. For this reason, we chose to increase the rear-wheel drive-force.
With the change in frame material from steel to aluminium, some may think that a change in riding character will also occur, but this is not so. It wasnt simply for weight reduction and the increase in rigidity that we decided to adopt this die-cast frame. Using Yamahas aluminium die-cast technology actually allows us much greater freedom in frame design. What characterises the new Fazer perhaps more than anything is the way we were able to use this design freedom to add an increased lightness and agility on top of the existing strengths of the original Fazers ride. No substantial change has been made in the basic direction of the original Fazer driveability and handling character. Making the most of its existing strengths and character, we created an even lighter and more agile ride. We believe that this difference will become obvious when you take this new machine out for some sport riding.

They have the confidence to make their own decisions, and are not prepared to compromise when it comes to choosing a motorcycle.
Typically, this group of young and dynamic riders will place great emphasis on the fun and enjoyment in riding a machine, and also the pleasure and pride experienced in owning the machine. They demand high technology, first class quality, advanced engineering and sports performance, and above all, are seeking a machine that has a strong style, unique character and aggressive street image.
The new FZ6 has been designed specifically to appeal to this discerning group of customers, and its arrival for 2004 is sure to focus even more attention on this increasingly significant sector of the marketplace in Europe.
