It’s the Multipurpose Utility Vehicle (MUV) that only Honda could build, and fittingly enough it’s called Big Red™. It’s multiple patents and numerous automotive-based technology features–not to mention Honda’s renowned quality, fit and finish–separate it from all other contenders. Thanks to its superior handling, secure feel and comfortable ride, Big Red has quickly set new standards of performance for both utility and recreational riders.
Has there ever been a machine where class-leading performance, safety and convenience come together so perfectly? (That’s a rhetorical question.) The Big Red was built with you in mind, which is the only way Honda knows how: tough, rugged, and as packed with performance as it is with industry-leading features. Like 3-point Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) seatbelts inside a stout, secure four-pillar cab built with 1.6”-diameter tubing. Separate brake lines that ensure stopping power even if one of your lines gets damaged or severed. Fully independent front and rear suspension coupled with a wide stance for superior handling. And perhaps best of all, knowing that it’s a Honda, with all the standard-setting quality and reliability for which we’re legendary.
With its superior handling, secure feel and comfortable ride, the Honda Big Red is destined to be the side-by-side of choice for both utility and recreation. Its multiple patents and numerous automotive-based technology features separate Big Red from all other category contenders.
Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) seat belts. The result? Safety you expect from Honda.
Protection from the Elements.
Big Red’s rugged, composite plastic doors and side netting create one of the safest MUV cabs going, securing you and your passenger in while keeping what nature throws at you out.
All Together Now.
The true beauty of Big Red’s four-wheel hydraulic disc braking system is its innovative, dual-circuit automotive-style design, which ensures braking from one front and one rear rotor in the event one line unexpectedly fails.

o New Olive color joins Red and Natural Gear Camouflage on the Big Red.
Features and Specifications
OHV liquid-cooled, PGM-FI fuel-injected, 675 cc, mid-engine design.
Automotive-style automatic transmission with hydraulic torque converter truly sets the Big Red apart.
No belts to wear out and replace.
Convenient dash-mounted drive selector.
Selectable drive modes include: 2WD with open rear differential for sensitive terrain/lawns, 4WD with rear differential lock and 4WD with all differential lock.
High-capacity liquid cooling provides consistent engine operating temperature in extreme conditions for maximum power output and long engine life.
Lightweight aluminum radiator is mounted high to avoid clogging by mud and damage from trail debris.
Liquid-cooled oil cooler aids engine heat dispersion to keep engine and transmission cool even under the most severe operating conditions, while also speeding engine warm-up on cold days. No ther side-by-side offers this feature.
Camshaft is located adjacent to the cylinder head, reducing engine height for a low centre of gravity and excellent handling.
Four-valve cylinder head with two short pushrods provides a broad powerband for optimum performance and engine efficiency.
Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) features a 40 mm throttle body, 12-hole two-pattern injector and Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) for reliable cold-weather starting and consistent engine performance at high altitudes.
IACV maintains consistent idle in all conditions.
Engine design meets California Air Resources Board (CARB) off-road emissions standards.
Stainless steel exhaust system provides superior corrosion resistance and minimizes noise levels.
The mufffler includes a spark arrestor that is USDA Forest Service certified for use in regulated or sensitive environments.
The automotive-style Honda automatic transmission features a hydraulic torque converter, three hydraulic clutches and an Electronic Control Module (ECM) to automatically select one of three forward gears and one reverse gear. The ECM monitors throttle opening, vehicle speed, engine rpm, gear selector position, brake application and engine oil temperature.
The Honda automatic transmission features positive engine braking that is superior to electronic braking systems used by the competition, which can result in inconsistent performance.
The Honda automatic transmission features a filtration system to protect against external contamination. The compact and maintenance-free design means there are no belts to wear out and replace. Using multi-filtered engine oil as hydraulic fluid, the design also simplifies maintenance and ensures an adequate oil supply in all operating conditions.
Independent double-wishbone suspension contributes to an exceptional 262 mm (10.3 inches) of ground clearance.
Independent double-wishbone suspension with high-quality variable-damping shock absorbers provides 150 mm (5.9 inches) of front travel and 180 mm (7.1 inches) in the rear.
Specially designed 25 x 10-12 front and rear tires provide added ground clearance while eliminating the need for multiple spares during extreme use.
Four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes have a balanced automotive-style design that ensures front and rear braking even if one brake line fails for some unexpected reason. The Honda Big Red is the only side-by-side in the class to use a “failsafe” braking system similar to that of an automobile.
Roomy cab and rubber-mounted bucket seats with adjustable backs are designed for a comfortable fit.
Waterproof accessory socket is ideally placed between the bucket seats for easy access to 12-volt power.
3-point Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) seat belts are similar to automotive type.
Automotive-type right-hand-operated parking brake is simple and easy to operate.
Big Red’s emergency brake can hold its maximum vehicle payload and its maximum trailer load up to a
30-degree inclind for secure peace of mind in off-road situations with a full load.
In-cab glove box and dash storage for quick access to small items.
Uniquely designed, four-pillar, six-piece 41.3 mm (1.6 inch diameter) occupant protection structure.
Heavy-duty two-inch receiver-style hitch with 544 kg (1,200 pounds) towing capacity.
Steel tilt bed with 227 kg (500 pounds) capacity is protected by an automotive-bumper-grade plastic liner. The tilt bed also features a progressive-action strut assist.
Front and rear disc brake calipers feature a patented built-in scraper system that helps prevent the buildup of debris between caliper and rim, ensuring consistent braking performance.
High sill doors, integrated headrests, protective door nets, seat belt release mechanisms are all designed to protect and facilitate occupants in the event of an inadvertent tip-over.
Multi-reflector headlight system and LED brake light and taillight provide optimal light illumination for nighttime activities.
Speedometer and warning lights for all the engine and drivetrain components are easily readable like those in an automobile.
Maintenance-free 12-volt 12-amp battery.
Durable, comfortable, easy-to-use controls.
Keyed ignition/starter switch for added security.
