STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD.

If motorcycles are about anything, they’re about freedom and independence and individuality. You ride your own ride—so why let someone else tell you what your bike should look like?

Honda’s radical NM4 is all about standing out and riding a bike that doesn’t look like it came out of someone else’s cookie-cutter idea of what a bike should be. You can see that for yourself. But what maybe you can’t see right away is that it’s a Honda through and through.

Let’s start with its 670cc fuel-injected engine. It’s designed for a wide power spread, and drives that power through Honda’s exclusive Automatic Dual-Clutch Transmission. Integrated saddlebags stow away everything you need to escape the mundane. Anti-Lock Brakes help give you added braking confidence in a cluttered urban wasteland. And the styling? It’s out of this world.

Stand-Out Styling

Want to turn some heads? The NM4 does more than just that. It’s easily one of the most unique motorcycles on the road. The angular fairing, the presence the front-end commands, the integrated storage. The NM4 is as futuristic as anything on two wheels.

Six-Speed Automatic Dual-Clutch Transmission

Honda’s revolutionary Automatic DCT transmission is changing the way people ride. It’s smooth, smart and the clear choice for a machine as futuristic as this one. Want to shift manually? The handlebar-mounted paddle-style buttons put you in control. It’s the best of both worlds.

Advanced Twin-Cylinder Engine

No matter how revolutionary a motorcycle looks, we all know great bikes start with great engines. The NM4’s 670cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin is pure Honda. Tipping the cylinders forward also contributes to the NM4’s low center of gravity, a big plus in terms of handling.

“From time to time over the years, Honda has pushed the envelope with unconventionally styled models like the Pacific Coast, Rune, Big Ruckus and DN-01,” said Lee Edmunds, American Honda’s Manager of Motorcycle Marketing Communications. “The NM4 is very much in this tradition, and while it’s not for everyone, that’s really the point; the model has proven to be a hit with a dedicated segment of consumers from a surprisingly varied array of demographics, including tech-savvy millennials but also veteran tourers and women. Those that buy NM4s tend to put a lot of miles on them, so we’re pleased to welcome it as our first street bike for 2018.”

NM4
While it’s the NM4’s disruptive form that earns headlines and double takes, the model absolutely delivers in the function department as well. A low center of gravity, enabled in part by the forward-rotated mounting of the powerful, liquid-cooled 670cc parallel-twin engine, results in a comfortable, light-handling motorcycle with a low-slung, feet-forward cockpit from which it’s very easy to reach the ground at stops. The passenger seat converts into a flip-up, adjustable backrest, and the bodywork provides ample wind protection and four separate storage compartments. Gear changes are accomplished via a high-tech, smooth-shifting Dual Clutch Transmission, which has standard and sport automatic modes but can also be manually shifted via handlebar-mounted buttons. The innovative, customizable LED dash display features color-coding for the transmission modes and delivers a host of information, including fuel-mileage tracking. Competent for applications from commuting to cruising, the NM4 more than holds its own on the road. Just don’t expect to go incognito.

2018 Honda NM4 Totalmotorcycle.com Key Features

Ever since it debuted in concept form at the 2014 Osaka Motorcycle Show, Honda’s NM4 has been an attention-getter and conversation-starter, its provocative, futuristic design setting it apart as something completely different. Though Japan-centric in conception, the NM4’s anime styling has developed somewhat of a cult following internationally, thanks in part to the fact that the outlandish looks are matched by solid performance. Engine/Drivetrain

  • Sophisticated, liquid-cooled SOHC eight-valve 670cc parallel-twin engine pumps out abundant torque for a linear and smooth power delivery.
  • Second-generation automatic six-speed Honda Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) uses two hydraulically controlled clutches to deliver quick and smooth gear changes in a choice of three modes: Manual (MT), which allows the rider to shift gears using buttons, and two automatic (AT) modes—S for sportier riding and D for everyday use.
  • Twin engine balancer shafts quell vibration for smooth, comfortable operation, and rubber-mounted floorboards also add to rider comfort.
  • Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) continuously monitors numerous variables to ensure the correct fuel mixture for existing riding and atmospheric conditions, thereby delivering optimal performance and crisp throttle response over a wide range of operating conditions.

Chassis/Suspension

  • Neo-futuristic styling highlights Honda’s capabilities for innovation.
  • Remarkably low seat height of 25.6 inches along with the 62-degree forward angle of the cylinder assembly help create a very low center of gravity, making the NM4 feel distinctly nimble and fun to ride.
  • Antilock Braking System (ABS) provides full antilock functionality for secure braking action.
  • Full LED lighting for the headlight, taillight and turn signals gives bright illumination and a distinctive appearance with reduced power draw.
  • Convertible passenger seat flips up to provide a backrest for the rider; three-way adjustable for lean angle, four-way adjustable for fore-and-aft positioning.
  • Integrated storage includes two saddlebags plus two storage pockets in the upper cowl.
  • Rider floorboards for added comfort.
  • Large 18-inch front wheel and fat rear wheel with 200mm tire lend a distinctive look.
  • High-tech meter display can be set to any of 25 different colors. Stock settings alter by drive mode: white for Neutral; blue for D; pink for S; red for MT.

2018 Honda NM4 Totalmotorcycle.com Features and Benefits

Conserves resources

Designed to be light, compact, extremely stingy on fuel and to conserve resources during manufacturing, the liquid-cooled, inline-twin engine incorporates numerous advanced and patented technologies.

Strong acceleration for city driving

To ensure strong acceleration, ease-of-use in the city and a relaxed character on the highway, the engine delivers exceptionally strong low-rpm performance. The unique design creates a muscular, easy-to-use powerband.

An engine that connects with sense

To give the engine a satisfying and distinctive sound and feel, engineers thought way outside the box. Twin balance shafts counteract vibration from higher rpm inertia, making the engine feel more refined, yet still with the distinct “throb” delivered by its 270° firing order. The intake-port layout was carefully designed to create an intentional interference between adjacent ports, resulting in subtle combustion variations. In addition, the timing for the opening and closing of the intake valves was set differently for each cylinder. The result? An engine that connects with the senses.

Confidence-inspiring handling

The engine’s inline cylinders are canted forward to help create a low overall centre of gravity for nimble, confidence-inspiring handling.

Exceptional fuel economy

Through the use of friction-reducing technologies, integrated components (such as running the water pump off the camshaft), precise PGM-FI electronic fuel-injection and efficient combustion, the NM4 engine delivers exceptional fuel economy.

More compact fuel tank

The engine’s efficient use of fuel enables the use of a smaller-volume, more-compact fuel tank that still allows ample riding range while giving engineers extra freedom to re-think the optimal placement of other components.

Maximized purification efficiency

The exhaust catalytic converter sits directly beneath the exhaust ports and is activated early when the engine starts. This design lets the combustion gas pass through the catalyst while it is at its hottest, thereby maximizing purification efficiency.

Seamless gear-shifting

The Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) includes two automatic drive modes, normal (D) and sport (S), as well as a manual mode with trigger-style shifting. Offering consistent, fast and seamless gear changes the twin clutches transfer drive from one gear to the next with minimal interruption, reducing gear change shock and pitching of the machine. Gear changes feel direct and smooth.

Smooth ride with exhilarating road feel

The lightweight, diamond-shaped steel-tube frame was carefully designed to be very sturdy while also allowing just enough flexibility to respond smoothly to changing road surfaces. This “tuned flexibility” produces a smooth ride while also generating a strong feel for what the bike is doing.

Increased rider confidence

Low seat height of only 650 mm and well placed floorboards put the rider firmly in control, with handlebars just a relaxed reach away. The high leverage handlebars and super-low centre-of-gravity further increase rider confidence.

Stopping power no matter the weather

Honda’s two-channel ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) provides added confidence during sudden stops or when the road is wet or slippery.

Excellent suspension & control

Lightweight aluminum swingarm improves suspension reaction and control.

Chromotherapy at your fingertips

The digital dash changes mood depending on the drive mode selected, with subtle colour changes from grey in Neutral, to light blue in D, to vibrant pink in S, ultimately to aggressive red in manual mode. The rider can also choose between five other tonal ranges of colour – 25 individual colours altogether to personalize their dash.

Versatile seating positions

The rear pillion seat flips upright when not in use, locking to provide the rider with a secure backrest and an almost fighter-pilot riding position. Its angle can be adjusted through three positions and it slides back/forward 25 mm through four settings, to fine-tune cockpit comfort.

Concealed storage & recharge station

Convenient storage spaces are concealed in the front bodywork. The left compartment opens with the ignition key and features 1-litre of storage space plus a 12V DC adaptor to recharge personal electronics. The right compartment has 3-litres of storage and opens with the push of a recessed, triangulated button.

Stylish & brilliant lighting

Lighting is full LED with front indicators built in to the bodywork while the angular headlight is framed with a stylish LED definition line.

Handsome finish

Matte black paint and componentry is complemented by carefully placed glimpses of burnished aluminum.
