World Changing Event: November 4, 2008 – Barack Obama is elected the 44th President of the United States and is the first African-American President-elect. Obama emphasized the issues of rapidly ending the Iraq War, increasing energy independence, and providing universal health care in a campaign that projected themes of “hope” and “change”. Obama-mania captured the nation. On October 9, 2009, Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples”.
