World Changing Event: March 8, 1965– The Vietnam War for the USA: Some 3,500 United States Marines arrive in South Vietnam, becoming the first American combat troops in Vietnam. The U.S. government viewed involvement in the war as a way to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam and part of their wider strategy of containment. The North Vietnamese government viewed the war as a colonial war, fought initially against France, backed by the U.S., and later against South Vietnam, which it regarded as a U.S. puppet state. By the end of the Vietnam War (30 April 1975) more than 3 million Americans served, some 1.5 million of whom actually saw combat in Vietnam; 58,220 soldiers were killed, more than 150,000 were wounded, and at least 21,000 were permanently disabled. The average age of the combat soldier was 19.
